Title: Found a duck...
Post by: Coulter on January 29, 2012, 06:52:07 PM
inside a piece of Atlantic White Cedar...I finally got some time to try my hand at this hand carved decoy thing. Man this is addicting!!! My wife yelled at me for sneaking back to the shop and getting all dusty again after I just showered. I kept eyeballing my progress and had to make a few more cuts

Here's my first honest effort...It has a ways to go yet, but it's coming along.

Thanks for looking,
Steve

Thanks guys...its a nice change of pace from the calls. It is a drake woody in progress. I also have one started in cork along with an Atlantic Brant started in cork. Its showing a bit more progress from when you and James were here Glen.

Jim...I know you're lying. You guys didn't use much more than the marsh reeds like the one below when you were growing up. :innocentwhistle:

That picture is actually of a primitive decoy found in cave in Nevada. It is though to be one of the very first decoys ever used for ducks.

Absolutely true Jim...

QuoteDuck Decoy Fast Facts

The oldest known duck decoys were discovered in Lovelock Cave in Nevada. It had been a shelter for native Americans for over 3000 years until an earthquake closed it off. In 1911, some artifacts were found by some bat guano miners. In 1924, archaeologists found 11 duck decoys that were made from marsh bulrush or tule reed and fancied up with some real duck feathers. It’s estimated that they were constructed around 200 A.D. These decoys are now in the Smithsonian Institute.

Damn your old :innocentwhistle: ya gotta love bat guano miners :puke:

 Lookin better?? How's that Steve?? Looks like you carved that duck up for eating then realized you were making a decoy & had to do a 180 on it to get it to float again!!

:doh2:  That 2nd one was the one Jim carved with the 'mater can lid. My bad there!!  :whew:

:alscalls: :alscalls:

Let's see some more pics!!

It still looks the same Glen...I need to find some riffling rasps and get them ordered. I've been checking locally for the last week and nobody has any. I'll get more pics next time I work on it. It's turkey calls tonight...

Soooo, how was LBL? You apparently made it back in one piece.

Don't know where to get those rasps at. Maybe Rocklers or Woodcraft. Check harbor freight as well.

The LBL was a lot of fun again. I think you will enjoy it.  It was a bit warmer than most of us would have liked but the coyotes didn't seem to mind. They were more than eager to respond.

Yeah, I tried Harborfreight...there 2.99 set of rasps looks like they will break as soon as you take 'em to a piece of wood. I know WC and Rocklers have them. I have one more place to look here in town then I will have to order them.

I'm game for next year...like I told you - I have it marked on my calendar already. It depends on if you're going or not though. Jim said he was coming next year :innocentwhistle: :innocentwhistle:

I think I'm gonna have to. Looking at some of these pics is making me home LBL sick.
I'm gonna start Googling routes again, and the first one of you's that I bump into is driving from there.
