Thats a winder upper. :laf:
You slip it over top of the doo hickey, and then close the handle on it and start winding by turning that lil crank.

No, I am sure that isn't correct. The handle is only about two and a half inches long.

 Something to do with the binding or the spine of the book? I cannot for the life of me figure out how it would work though.

Nothing to do with the spine or the binding.

Well, a man could slip the money clip looking double walled base part over the top or bottom edge of a hardback book cover, and then move the lever left or right till the crank handle looking piece holds the book open.  I never cared for any of those book reading aid things but several contraptions existed in different designs to hold a book open.

Sorry, but it didn't hold the book open.

I found the butt out tools on sale at Walmart once and bought 10 of them and gave them to everybody for Christmas  :innocentwhistle:

* I apologize if I have offended anybody by mentioning a Christian holiday 😇

My sister-in-law thought the one I gave my brother was a sex toy  :innocentwhistle:

Now theres a Butt Out #2!  It's 2 inches longer, for when you really want to go deep, must be for the elk hunters
