Was thinking about a puzzling cougar call-in from last year, trying to think what I could do better, when all of a sudden I realized what made the lion’s behavior seem odd: The cat was stalking my calling partner rather than stalking the e-caller. As soon as that thought came clear, everything the lion did made perfect sense.
The cat first approached from straight across the brushy clearing from my cousin. As it looked toward the e-caller in mid clearing, I think it saw some small movement from my cousin who was hidden beyond it. I doubt that the cat knew it was a man but from that point on he stalked what he’d seen till he was 10-12 yards straight downwind of my cousin, then he walked away.
All circumstantial evidence, so no problem if anyone does not agree with my analysis. Sometimes long after an event a man can see it in a different light, and come to a different conclusion.
