Last night Diane & I went out to roost a Tom or two. We got zero responses in all 5 locations. Diane asked what I was gonna do in the Am & I said I'll just have to wing it I guess. So I did. Turns out I think there were 3 Jakes & 2 Toms in my #1 choice. At least that's what it sounded like as I was setting in my #2 spot!! :doh2: But from this spot I had easy walking access to 2 other roost sites plus the one I was set up on. At 5:55AM they started sounding off in my #1 spot. Then I heard 1 gobbling from what would be the #5 spot. I was on spot #2 all of a sudden no more than 80yds to my left I had a single gobble. I was looking right into the rising sun & could see him walking on the branch. So I gave a couple soft yelps on the slate & used my hat to sound like a fly down. :eyebrow: A few minutes later I watched him fly down on the hillside out of sight. I waited til 6:15AM & gave some soft slate purrs. He gobbled one more time. By 6:30Am I was lowering the,,,,,,,,,, shotgun because i wasn't looking for a Jake this early in the season. He was at 19yds. He was a real nice 5" Jake with a nearly full fan & looked heavy. Should be a nice Tom next year if he makes it. I didn't get pics of him tho.
In the meantime the others were still running their beak. So I packed up @ 6:45AM & headed off on a 500yd trek that would bring me within 150yds of them IF they weren't in the hay field. They weren't in the field so I got as close as I dared & set out the hen deke. By 7:30 I was lowering the ,,,,,,,,, shotgun again. 2 more Jakes. Much smaller with 2-3" beards & the full Jake fan. It'll be another 12-18mos for them if they make it I suspect. I did get pics of these little fellas tho. They were at the 15yd mark.

Here are 2 short clips of them. About 20 seconds each. The quality isn't too bad. :innocentwhistle: I got one to strut but they would not gobble. The only time they gobbled in the field was when they would go back over the roll where I couldn't see them. :noway: :laf:

No dead birds but I had fun nonetheless!! Thats what it's all about for me. Trigger time is just an added bonus.
Hope you enjoyed my little adventure today.
Good day in the field Glenn ! :congrats:
Great story! And I'm lovin' the action shots and movies. :highclap: I can't wait to get out there myself this spring.
Thanks for sharing
Brian
Your back to work about a month and your taking days off for things like this? :nofgr: :rolleye:
Sounds like my kinda guy Way to go Glen :yoyo: :laf: :roflmao:
Looks like a great hunt Glen...it ain't always about the kill  Those are some pretty cool pics too. I hope ya find a big brusier Tom.
I'm heading out tomorrow morning to do bit of pre-season scouting. :eyebrow:
Steve
I love catch and release Glen! Fantastic, now get back out there and take a sign that says fins and fur to hold up in the frame that would be awesome.
Thats awesome Glen, nice job !!
Thanks guys!! I had the sign made up but I couldn't catch the damn bird to pin it on him!! :laf: :laf:
It was a very enjoyable AM for me. I've waited 11 months for today & it was worth every minute. Catch & release aint all that bad. :nono: I was feeling a little bad about taking that 6" bearded Jake last spring so I let these guys go for now. We'll see what the end of the season brings me. Plus I have tomorrow to get out too!! :roflmao:
When are you headed out Abe,, errr,,, uuhhmm,, :holdon: Bill!! :laf: :laf:
Best of Luck to everybody in the next few weeks too!!
Hey my wife said those jakes taste just fine.......and as usual.......she is right.
You're doing a lot better than me. After more than a week I have only called in a couple hens. Only heard a gobble or two and they was way off. Very quiet verses how they were last year :rolleye:
You're right Al!! I neither condone nor condemn shooting Jakes. It is my preference to leave em but I don't want an empty tag at the end of the year either. I believe a Jake is also a fine example of woodsmanship & turkey calling when you can get one to the barrel or the bow. I also know there are quite a few nice Toms on & around this property so I'll wait for one of them. I will not berate a fellow hunter on his choice of shooting a Jake. :pout:
Hey Stu!! I was thinking about you the last few days!! Especially this AM as the sun was rising. I'm glad you're back out there gettin after em again!! Good Luck my Friend & if you need anything just holler!!
A lot of times around here a Tom is usually not too far off. Just cluck & purr with them on a slate call & hang on. Those are the Toms that come in quiet. And don't be afraid to get up & move either. Go after those distant Toms while they are gobbling so you can keep track of them & know when you're within 100yds or so. Good Luck!!
Good stuff Glen. Thanks for sharin the clips with us. :thumb2:
Thats awsome Glen......you'll get your chance soon enough.
Sounds and looks like you had a pretty good day in the woods.
I had a pretty slow first day, I didn't hear or see a single tom or jake. I saw six lone hens.
Chad
I am thinking of being sick on Wednesday morning  :roflmao: I will have to see what is happening at work
Giood stuff Glen. I'm glad you took the time to capture that and bring it in.
They kinda look like they know you got the camera, and are showing off  You sure they arent tied up? :sneer:
Glen,
That's great! Looks like your first morning was a good one.
JIm
You da man Hamer........ :thumb2:
Thanks guys!! I know the videos aren't as good as CCP's or some others but it was fun. I even snapped a picture with the flash on accidently & they never left. :laf: I'm going back out in a few minutes & try it again. This is some fun stuff & I'll try to get something better for you guys today. :eyebrow:
Good Luck Chad & Bill!! I'm rooting for you guys in the contest!! :eyebrownod: :eyebrownod:
It sure was Jim!!
Not sure about being the man in the turkey woods Bop. But I'll take your word for it!! Thanks!!
They weren't tied up Jimbo. Maybe mesmerized by that sweet talk but not tied up. Oh hell,, I just got lucky they can't smell is all. :laf: :laf:
Good stuff Glen.
They almost appear to be, well....showing off for the camera. Are you sure they arent tied up?
Glen,
Nice looking birds. If any of them would have been in my range I would have shot.
I was in Columbus yesterday rather than being in the field. I went out this morning and actually think someone was in the woods with a couple of Gobbler calls. They started about 6:15 and went pretty much non-stop for almost an hour. Either there was a flock of Toms in the woods or some jerks with calls. Either way, I will find out in the morning when I set up in the woods. I only saw one bird this morning and it was at the other end of the field - came out, stretched his or her neck out to where it looked like a goose, dropped it's head, and totally beat feet across the field to the other woods. I knew they could run, but have never seen one go like this before.
Jerry
Must be an echo in here.
:laf: :laf:

Too bad you couldn't make it out yesterday Jerry. I know you woulda liked to. There's nothing wrong with taking a Jake. I just prefer to go after the Toms til the end of the season is all. They started gobbling this AM @ 5:55 again. The sun wasn't even up & I wasn't to my setup spot yet. It ended up being a 25 minute walk & not a 15 minute walk. :doh2: Oh well. As near as I could figure there were 4 Toms & 3 Jakes around me. I was just set up way wrong again. :laf: :laf: I watched a red fox stalk a flock one evening. The fox was on the tail of one til it started flapping it's wings & found another gear!! I swear it's head snapped back & grass & dirt started flying up behind it in a roostertail!!! :roflmao: :roflmao: The fox just gave up. :laf: :laf:
Good Luck tomorrow!! Hope to see a big ol Tom under your name when I get home from work tomorrow. :yoyo:
This is a 750 acre farm I have permission to hunt on for the last 7-8 years. Everything inside the red line plus another 30 or so acres at the bottom of the screen that were cut off.
Yellow X's are the 5 primary roosts. At roost #1 I let the nice 5-6" Jake walk @ 6:30AM Monday.
Purple X is where I parked the truck on day 1 & the green line is the day 1 foot travel route. Over by roost 2 is where I got the pics & videos. This was a 10 minute walk at least. :whew: :laf: :laf:
Blue X & line is where I parked on day 2 & my travel path. I wasn't familiar with the trail out around to the right & stopped way too short of where I needed to be. :doh2: I stopped well before the hard left in the blue line & the Toms were gobbling on the #3 roost several hundred yrds away. I know that area a lot better now tho. :eyebrow: The little blue fish hook in the middle of the screen is where I spent 1 1/2hrs hoping to catch them working the edge of the pasture field. I wasn't set up that far back in really. I just suck at marking these maps!! :laf: :laf:
The black X's are where I was setting when I shot 2 coyotes. The brown X's are where the coyotes were.
this is kinda rough but I had fun trying to give you an idea of what my area looks like & how I played it.

Yeah I had to shrink it done a good bit to get it to post. I'm still learning. I aint no puter dude for sure. :nono:
Went to Dads this evening & borrowed his chair blind. While we were there he talked Diane into carrying his 28ga with a red dot scope. We will be close enough together that I can peel off a quick followup if needed. :thumb2: :yahoo: :thumb2: :yahoo: :thumb2: :yahoo: :thumb2: :yahoo:
Now if I'm not too sick to get out of bed in a couple hours. :puke:
Get em Hammer, I look forward to hearing all about it! :eyebrownod:
We're going out tomorrow instead.
Oh for pete's sake HaMeR :rolleye: what's up with that?
:laf:
Damn sinus infection whipped my silly ass to the ground. This one is like having the flu. Fever & body aches without the puking & the craps plus I can hardly breathe. At best I slept 2 hrs straight the last two nights. I will be out tomorrow AM no matter what.
Glenn, I feel for ya man. I've had sinus problems since I was a kid. It is a year round thing with me, and it just plain sucks :argh:
Glen Suck it up man

If ya would have called me last evening I have some stuff that will knock the shit out of the infection and let you
go about doing your thing
It is a homemade medicine and it cures just about anything If it don't cure it and you take enough of it you will

I had a sinus infection so bad one time the the whole roof of my mouth, including all my top teeth and gumbs were numb.
The doctor said it was caused by the infection and the swelling pushing down on nerves. Man I was freaking out :shck: :holdon:

Well that and if most people had a head like yours they WOULD NOT want to feel it anyway.......... :laf:
Here's the hi-lite of my day. This was the 2nd grey squirrel to give me hell for being in the woods sick. Once again no tripod. So it's kinda shaky. :laf:

:laf: :laf:
Glen,
I thought you were going TURKEY hunting. Now I find out you are after squirrels. :doh2:
Jerry
Isn't it like day 7 or somethin?
:laf: :laf: I let those little buggers go til this fall Jerry. Actually it felt more like a squirrel scouting trip than a turkey hunt. :laf: :laf:
Having any luck Jerry?? :eyebrow:
With the turkeys you dirty bird!! :laf: :laf:
Hi Joe. Yeah but I just thought I would post it all in this one thread. Maybe it should be retitled "My 2008 Turkey Adventures". :laf: :laf:
Glen,
My season so far has been filled with problems. The principal's association has some problems and I have been in Columbus several days and then my daughter had her gallbladder removed so we spent a couple of days there. We also brought our granddaughter home with us when we left so I have been busy playing, which is really a good thing and actually even better than hunting. Oh yea, on top of that I had new brakes and an exhaust manifold put on the truck two weeks ago only to find out today that it needs a new catalytic converter.
The one day that I was out I did have a first. Like you, I had been watching a squirrel that was running around. When it headed up to the tree tops I thought I would not watch it any longer since I didn't think the movement of my head would increase my chances of getting a turkey. A few minutes later, due to things falling, I realized that the squirrel was in the tree that I was sitting against. No problem until he silently came down the tree and put his feet on my hat, which had my head inside. Needless to say we both got a good scare. I said some bad words and the squirrel took off like a shot.
Jerry
:roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao:
Now that is funny. Several years ago I had a squirrel that had walked up and jumped right on top of my gun barrell. I thought the guy I was with was going to loose it. I just did the little "boo" and that thing went flying up that tree. :nono:
Well I hope your Daughter is doing better now for sure. That's more important than anything else. The truck,, well they are just monet pits you know. And work just sucks. :laf: Especially in the spring time about,, oohh I don't know,, RIGHT NOW!!! :roflmao:
But the squirrel story was a good one!! :laf: Did you check your hat for squirrel pellets?? :laf: :laf:
Lmao, I watched a hen peck my brothers boot a couple years ago and I did loose it, laughin so hard I had tears !!
