Title: Doe shot but not found
Post by: Bills Custom Calls on November 29, 2008, 05:05:23 AM
I was up by 5am coffee drank and ready to head out the door by 7:25.It was daylight ,but the sun wasn't shining
through the trees yet.I had the feeling this was the morning I was putting some deer meat in the freezer
Out the basement door I go and after walking about 20 steps I see a doe step out in the driveway, shit !!
I stop she stops, she hasn't seen me yet,but the snow is crunchy, this is gonna be tough to sneak into position for a shot.I have a real good idea where she is going and I know I can get within shooting range if I am quite.
I managed to do it,here she comes and the arrow found its mark.Sure seems like a good hit she went down right when the arrow hit,but then right back up  :shck:  :wo: I waited a minute or so and made the long walk back to the house  :laf: the fellers that were putting the gutters on were coming up the drive and I had to meet with them.I put my things away and told Chris there was a deer down I will go look for it as soon as I get the workers started.
8:30am back out the door and Chris is with me we go to where I shot this deer lots of hair and no blood.Where the heck is my arrow? Standing at the edge of the bank overlooking the overgrown field. There she is about 150 yards away, limping and favoring the left front leg. This isn't right I shot her in the right shoulder.I told Chris lets go back to the house ,and I will come back out in about an hour she should be down by then.
I looked for this deer the better part of the day and never found her. This makes me sick to think I have wounded a deer and now she may just die out there and become food for the predators

Bill, That really sucks when that happens,   it is unbeliveable how far they can go sometimes even after being shot with a rifle, makes it real tough when they don't leave a Blood trail, Hope you will be able to get some Deer meat for your freezer. cc

If there is snow on the ground, the blood trail should look like a neon sign.  If there is no blood, then you didn't hit her very good.   She will survive.  I've seen deer limping before and they make it.  Remember the 3 legged coyotes?  They do OK.

I was out again this morning and still no sign of the deer. Most of the snow has melted off the only snow left around is what was packed on the drive and where the sun don't shine.I will probably give up on this one and hopefully she survived.with all the brown hair that was laying on the ground and the way she went down I thought for sure it was a good hit.It has been a few years since this has happened to me that I just can't believe I messed up like that.
I have heard stories like this before so I know I am not the only one this happens to

Jim If you would have honked the horn when you got here I am sure the Mother in law would have heard ya  :laf:

Bill there isn't much I can say to make it feel any better, but even the cat's, dog's and other predator's sometimes miss and what do they do afterward's?  They try again and again until they get fed so having said that, Go Get 'Em Bill.

That sucks Bill!!!

But everybody thats hunts has had it happen and will have it happen again. We can do our best but every once in a while it just ain't good enough.

All you can do is suck it up and try harder next time. Oh and practice shooting alot weather it be a gun or bow.

It happens Bill.......I am having poaching problems and have yet to kill a deer with my gun. :argh:
One guy shot a tree limb over my uncles head :argh:
When I catch them they will have a real bad day! They aren't even wearing orange. :rolleye:
