Went out today for some stands with Jim........I took him to some new ground.

See the farthest ridge in the first pic that is where we moved too after a few dry stands....
And when we reached the top after a nasty climb in the mud........We peeked over to find these turkeys feeding in the local scat piles........
But wait!!!!!!!!! I see a half white hen in there!!!!!!! So I grab my camera and snap the best pic I could......
She is smaller than the rest and black and white!!!!! Do not see that every day........ :nono:
She is right there...... I scared em off with this pic and Jim was trying to take a pic....... :doh2:

and set up on this funnel.......
No luck at all.....It got up to 71 deg. today and very windy but we are trying to win an e-caller
and still had a great day........ :yoyo:

Oh well maybe we will get a critter to go with the sign next time.... :eyebrow:
:yoyo:
Nice Sign!
71 degrees? Holy cow!
Real nice pics! It was 71 here in my end of Kentucky today. And real windy.
This weather is absolutely crazy! :shck:
Al,
I hated to end the hunting early today. But I don't regret it as the Mountaineers beat North Carolina in their bowl game 31 to 30. Then the Mountaineer basketball team beat No.#15 Ohio State by over 20 points. Don't remember the exact score. It was a great morning to hunt though. I just didn't like the wind on that last setup?? Nice farm though and I'm sure we will be back out there when the wind is more favorable!!
A Great day to be a Mountaineer!!
Jim
:shck: Why didn't ya shoot that cat in the 6th pic?
Nice sign and great pictures and story. :highclap:
Tried hunting this morning also. 67degrees and windy. Planned to hunt all day but wind was high hopefully tomorrow but more rain.
Cant wait to read your next story.

Who got to sit in the tree stand at the last stand? :wo:
I sat in the shade of it.... :eyebrow: That way they would look and see no one was there and never see me.
Al,
That cat must have been what flushed those birds you told me about. I sure didn't see it??? CCP has some good eyes on him!
Jim
We are still at it........

Dave, I wish you well and I wish you were here buddy.
Al and I got out this morning to a new Public Hunting property near us. Friends of mine from DNR let us know that they had recently acquired 1500 additional acres contiguous to a current WMA (Wildlife Management Area = public hunting area). We did four stands and scouted quite a bit. My legs are tired too Al. We walked several miles out an old haul road doing stands along the road and over the hill to the right or left depending on the wind. It was a beautiful pleasant day to be out. Good exercise for us old guys!! Here are some photos . . . .
Just a shot to show you the kind of area we were in. Really nice woods that havn't been timbered for a while.
These are some tracks we found, I'm still having trouble identifying tracks, what do you guys think?? Coyote or dog??
Al had a great setup here looking down a haul road. I set the Scorpion out in front of him about 75 yards and then I set up down over the hill to his right watching another haul road that branched off this one. We ran distress sounds for a while then tried some howling. No response.
Here is Al set up behind a fallen log.
And here is Frogman behind the same log, I wanted to get my picture posted too . . . .
As Al said in his post above, we had a great day that could have only been made better with fur down. Maybe next time??!!
What do you guys think about the tracks?? Looking forward to you responses.
Jim
Jim, that's some good lookin' coyote tracks ya found there
It's always great to get out with friends, sure looks to be a fine place to call critters too.
Thanks for sharing :eyebrownod:
Edit: It looks to me like those tracks are still very fresh. You all may very well have gotten busted on the way in. :argh:
great pics and story, I tried today but no luck
At least you got to get out some today. It was a nice day out. Your legs probably wouldn't be as tired if you had a smaller shooting stick to carry with ya.
coyotehunter_1,
Thanks for the response. The ground was frozen this morning and thawed out later in the afternoon. Those tracks were probably from yesterday when the ground was not frozen. They were pretty big tracks. We found some others near where we parked that we assumed were coon hound tracks???? I'm just not sure how to tell the difference yet??
Jim
Good story and pic's looks like you guys had fun. :congrats: I like your setups in that type country looks like some of my woods.

:roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao:
That cracked me up. You are right weedwalker it looks like that shooting stick wood be like totin a log around all day.
Al and I figured that dragging that "shooting stick" around with us all day would help get us in shape for LBL!!
Jim

And for dragging critters from Jim's yard....... :laf:
Whats wrong with my shooting stick?... It ways less than my gun
Them aint Yote tracks :nono:
hey Al, meybe ya oughta let Frogman know.
I hate to disapoint ya Al but the first pic is coyote tracks about a day old. Freezing preserves the sharp ridges to some extent making them look newer that thay are. Look at the bottom track in th first pic, see the ridge between the two left toes. That tiny break is caused by the freezing and thawing cycle. They were made the afternoon before just before they froze.
Hey Froggie, would you please teach Bop how to take pics . Those are darned good . Jimmie
I wondered the same thing Jimmie.....Thanks, But most of what we saw were dog tracks and you could also see the guys foot prints where he followed his dog.
I saw the ones in the first pic and told jim could be yote.
They looked like he was following that coon hound like they have me many times.
Going bear / yote hunting ths am.......Wish me luck and I do have my camera :eyebrow:
I 'm w/ Al on this, I'd say they're dog tracks. To wide to be coyote I'm thinking.
Sometimes it's hard to tell between K-9 and coyote, :hahaha: I've been fooled a few times myself :doh2: I agree with Jimmie... still looks like coyote.
Went out again today and was looking for my friend a bear.......coyote.......bobcat.....fox......or just a good time....Started off with a real long drive, then a real long walk so fist thing ........I did some cooking of a special blend......
then a long beautiful day...

My camera batteries died but we saw bear tracks and scat but no bear... Better luck next time.
My buddy said I could not hit this squack with my .308 @ 155yds. :rolleye: Will they ever learn.. :laf:
Dont make me enter it in the contest guys get out there and take pics. Great day!
Oh yea....I used some critter juice too......I will check back later and see if the bear came for it I poured it all over a dead stump. The deer seem to like it.
looks like you had a good day Al!!
Jim
Al, fine looking critter country you got there
QuoteThis aint from no bear and it aint no deer rub.......... :nono: I know what it is..... eyebrownod Do you?
Well... I know it sure ain't coyote. :roflmao:
I've seen hogs do damage like that but it looks to be too high up on the tree for that. Bigfoot? :eyebrownod:
Let us know how the "Critter Juice" works on bear
QuoteThis aint from no bear and it aint no deer rub.......... :nono:
Thats one dull axe ya got there Al!! :laf: :laf:
It was like that for about 2-1/2 feet from the base of the tree........ :wo:
:doh2: Now I know what it is!!
But I'll PM you the guess.
What'd you do set up a wet bar out there?
Nice ride along, thanks for the pics :congrats:

FYI: The taking of the squirrel @ 155yds. with a .308 was legal and was when we got back to the truck where the fresh batteries were for the camera. The meat was saved and I intended the shot to not waste anything. However one front leg was lost. I may take the .22 out tomorrow for some more as they are breeding and we saw 6-10 of em in the same tree everywhere we went.
Still trying....Scouting mostly today....saw a lot of squacks I will see them again soon :eyebrow:
The wind was awfull today so no calling just took the .22 and looked around some....
A tree stand My brother in law and I welded up..22 ft. to the platform...
I will be hunting tomorrow some but not for coyotes this time they need a break...and so do I....But I am having a lot of fun and time to think.
Man, I think I'd need a sandwich by the time I got to the top of that thing.

You mean the tree stand or the hill?
I am almost to the top of the hill in both pics..........Only takes about an hour to climb it.
I made the tree stand that tall so that when the deer come over the top of the ridge.....they aint looking right at ya.
I like tree stands to be at least 18-20 feet high. 22 feet would be even better. One might be surprised at the amount of game ya can see when ya hunt high.
Nice stand, Al.
