Fri/Sat/Sunday only until March 15th then it's closed for nesting. Season usually opens back up around June 10th or so.

Vic.....We were in the thick cover, Calling with mouth calls at first some then hitting the e caller hard and loud waiting till that first crow showed up and trying to kill him.(THE SCOUT BIRD)
Then we would pause and listen for the crows to come back some on their own and hit the E-caller again.
We were also blowing rabbit distress in with it all.....Early morning seems best...... GO GET EM MAN!! :yoyo:
Sit in the woods not the fields......thick pines seemed best. Up high!

Here's my entry.  Couldnt get the kids up and out this morning.  Went 6 for 10 with their new 20 guage over-under. ( could only recover 4, 2 hid very well in the thick stuff ) That is one sweet shooting shotgun, I felt like I couldnt miss with it.
Got back home around 11am and went back out with the kids, wind picked up and they wouldnt come in low, stayed up too high.
Sorry for the quality of the pic, my camera broke and had to take a cell photo.

Had to throw a plug in there for my buddy Coulter

What a great day to be afield, I bet 50+ flocks of geese went over, all around 100 or more birds each.

Well I gave it my best today.   :rolleye:  I'm hoping it will hold up since Ohio crow ended today. I did lose the 1st bird of the AM. It glided several hundred yards off over to property the County owns & is strictly posted nowadays. So after starting 1 for 3 & no birds on the ground I started to warm up a little. I hit the next 3 then promptly missed the next 4 shots.  :rolleye:  After setting there for a few minutes with no birds I calmed down. Then I went 10 for 14!! Oh yeah Al I was coming for your 12 bird total big guy!!  :yoyo:

Here's the pic from the 1st set. I like to call it "The Carnage Shot".  There is 14 crows & one deke on the far left.

Barry--  :doh2:  Sorry I didn't respond to your post. I haven't started the book yet. I go to the bone Doc this evening so I'll lounge out later & start it.

I know you would Al. I even waited til after dark to post these pic so you didn't have time to run over here to Ohio & bust another 1/2 dozen!!  :hahaha:

Thanks Hidehunter!! My best day by myself is 20. I've hit that twice. My Brother & I killed 34 one AM. He dusted me purdy good. I think I only had 14 that day. That sign idea was from Silencer with the shells up there.   I didn't scout these birds so I didn't bother to make a sign.  :laf:

     :wo:   You know if I give away all my secrets what I'll have to do right Vic??!!  :laf: :laf:

The 2nd rock pile from right to left you can see my brown coat against the big tree in the background. I was setting against that tree. I shot them all thru the branches above me as they flew over. I had one come in & just as it started to swoop up to land on a branch I pounded it from about 18-20yds.  :eyebrownod:  Man the feathers flew from that one!!  :eyebrownod: I set 6 full bodied dekes out to the left of the pic. I set the FX3 next to one. We keep the dekes about 30yds out in front of us. It was a feeding setup. Once the geese starting flying get ready. The crows are next to start squawking. I like to use a hand call at 1st to just bring a bird or two in at a time. This is when I keep the caller set on a crow distress or dyeing crow. Hit the e-caller when you shoot & the birds flair. The distress can & sometimes does bring them back for round 2. Then when this dies off I go to the e-caller. I like to use FP's crow party. It's non-threatening & seems to be inviting. Now the crows can come in 10 at a time so be locked & loaded. When the flair from the shooting hit the crow distress on the e-caller. This will work for a while too. Then when that sound dies off it's time to crank it up. I use the crow fight on full volume. This is when if there are more than a handful of birds around it's nice to have another shooter. Cause now the whole bunch of em are gonna come!! It's great too. Then when this dies off,, which is usually purdy quick,, I'll just set & watch for anymore birds off in the distance & wait a little while. I'll hit the crow party once in a while for a couple  minutes & see if there are any new birds in the area.  The one thing I've found that sometimes helps too is that once you have the same number of dekes & crows on the ground bag the dekes up. The birds in the carnage pic were all placed there with wings laid back & their beaks stuck in the dirt.

If you want to know anything else just holler. I'll try to help.  :yoyo:

I use a good quality high brass factory 7-1/2 when I can and mix in all those.......... I do not know what to do with shells, I got laying around the house so I can get rid of them.
Title: Re: Crow Shoot Rules/Pics
Post by: HaMeR on March 16, 2009, 07:13:08 PM
Vic-- Coming from the Family that I come from we use reloads.  :eyebrownod:  My Brother tunes everything for me. It's something he just loves to do & is very meticulous at it. For the most part I use 7 1/2's. I've tried 8's & really like them too. Plus with the smaller shot you get a lot more shot in each shell. Have you patterned your shotgun at 35yds with 7 1/2's or different chokes??

Bill-- If you would have gotten into the crows like I did yesterday you would start making crow calls & leave the land roamers to others.  :laf:

Al-- I shoot all low brass. It loads easier. Using those oddball shells up on crows doesn't really seem like a waste when you smoke some crows does it??  :eyebrownod:

Title: Re: Crow Shoot Rules/Pics
Post by: alscalls on March 16, 2009, 07:39:03 PM
Vic,
if you look at it like this.......
The small strands of a feather bound together being hit by a larger dia. shot grabs the shot on entry and slows it down.
The smaller shot gets grabbed by less strands causing less friction upon entry slipping more easily through to the body.

Glen,
A factory high brass is hotter than a factory low brass and that is what I meant.
I used to reload shot shells and man I tell ya you can load a low brass hull hotter than any factory low brass load and even hotter than some high brass loads......I do Love the 7-1/2 hot loads for crow I have made some long shots with it outa my turkey gun..... :eyebrow:

This weekend will be the last few days, if you havent gotten out yet, best do so and put a whoopin on these egg suckers.  I've already found some small bird eggs that have been ambushed and broke open.  I know the guilty party are a pair of crows that are nesting down the street in the big pine.  I cant shoot em in town.. :argh:

I think that's a nationwide thing Barry. It's illegal to discharge a firearm within city limits.
I'm assuming because the, "know your target and beyond" thing, is completely out the window in such a case. :eyebrow:

Barry, I cant even build a camp fire in the backyard to roast marshmellows let alone discharge a firearm.  They'd be on me slicker than snot on a door knob.   Town living sucks.

Jim,

Just to help you out and cut down on your "look up" time.  Sub lemon or sometimes called sub-lemonal messages are ones that are a little higher in acidic content than sub-orange or sub-grapefruit messages.

Vic sent me a PM before I seen this.
I basically told him that if your gonna run it for bragging rights only... like the last ....one go for it. You can set it up, and dont really need to even ask.

If your looking to go the full nine yards, prizes etc and need funding from the FnF bank for cash prizes etc....get a hold of Jerry since Chet and Rich are at the LBL.

There's discussions taking place in the mods forum now and the three of them will be handling most of the contest stuff since all I do is screw it up.

Actually I'm getting too much on my plate with the hosting business and what not, and it's tough to juggle with the contests and time involved in most of them. So these guys are gonna roll it around.

Glen,

No problem and I really am not all that educated.  I just know my vegetables like lemons, oranges, and grapefruit.  They might be fruits I can never tell them apart - they all look the same.  I do know that they are NOT nuts.  I am the only one that is going nuts.  Jim gives us permission to work on the contests and then Chet and Rich leave.  Heck I am left here sending emails to myself asking myself questions that I really don't have the answers to or I would not have needed to send the email to myself in the beginning.  It DOES make me feel much better when I get a reply from myself telling myself that the original myself that received the email doesn't  know either.  At least that way I am not alone.   :sick2:

Glen,

Well, as you know, in elections we are not allowed to reveal who voted which way and can only release the final results.  In this particular case it won by ONLY two votes.  (This is one of the closest votes that I can remember taking part of since the one to name a ribbed call.  That one only had one vote which is the number it won by.)  There was an exit poll that was conducted and it seems that one vote was cast with the feeling that nothing should be unanimous - whatever that means.  After all, it was either Yes or No and someone wants to vote for Not Unanimous.  I think it might have been one of the ACORN recruits from one of the muslim countries, but (again) as we both know we are not allowed to ask that type of question any longer either.

I did get an email from PETA that went on and on about how bad it was that we were encouraging the killing of helpless crows and they then suggested that the rules might be changed so that only plastic crows (similar to the ones used for decoys) be used for both the hunt and the shoot.  I said that my reply would be in the mail (I taped an envelope on a cement brick, placed a 1 cent stamp on it the envelope, marked it overnight express, and left it at the post office.  I think they should have my reply today - along with a postage due of close to $75.  (I love messing with PETA.)

I hope that this will help you understand the complexity of the vote.  Personally, I am just glad that FnF was able to make the 2010 contest available to the members.

Jerry

QuoteI hope that this will help you understand the complexity of the vote.

  NOPE!!!  :roflmao:

I'm just glad that at least two of you could agree with yourselves on this one. It's rare to find that in folks these days. Usually they bicker back & forth with themselves but this time they all pulled together as,,,   I aint got a clue what they pulled together as but I'm glad they did!!  :yahoo:

As for the ribbed call vote. I still feel it was rigged & it shoulda been named after it's creator. The groovy broomstick maker.  :laf: :laf:
