A lot of material out there about misting and the use of scents. Anyone use them? last season my gear was taking on the pungent smell of bobcat urine.....sweet!! it was nasty if the wind shifted...But I'll take one for the team if it brings in more dogs & cats

First off Welcome!

Second I would not put it on you I would put it out away from you as to try and not draw attention to your position.
I have used a bunch of stuff....... but lately I concentrate a lot more on my set up and going less. Quality Vs. Quantity kinda thing.

...going less.

The first time I read what you said all I could think of was how important this was. Every time you pee in the woods you are laying down a hugs scent bomb. Make sure you pee before you leave and bring a wide mouth Gatorade bottle to pee in while you are out...

Then I realized that you were talking about making sure your stands are as good as they can be, since you have less time to hunt..."going less."  :doh2:

Anyway, don't give away your position. Either hold it or pee in a bottle!

I dont need a wide mouth Gatorade bottle though. I use old pen refills when they run out of ink. They're perfect, easily fit in your pocket, and doesnt add any bulk.

Now as for the other side of the coin... :laf: I've never used scents, but my opinion is if you think you need it, to dab an extremely small portion on the sole of each shoe before heading off to a stand.
The idea behind scents when calling is not so much about attracting as it is covering up. A coyote can smell every step you took as you walked to your stand, so a little hubba bubba on each shoe sole may intrigue him or confuse him to his demise, but it's not going to hide your own human scent as he knows it.

Scents used for trapping are to attract. Varmint may approach a set and get a snoot full of the hubba bubba, or he may catch a whiff of it down wind and approach the set. The difference here is your not there emitting odor with it.

FryerJim... remind me to never, ever drink any Gatorade I find in your truck.  :puke: :shock2:   :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao:

Now getting back on topic...  :innocentwhistle:
I've used different scents in the past... coyote, fox and rabbit urine mostly. I even have a home brew recipe that smells a whole lot better than that stinky stuff. I feel using scents can't hurt but I'm not convinced they will make a bad stand good. Personally, I had rather let the wind be my friend.

Born and raised in the southern highlands of Appalachia, I'm just an ol' country boy who enjoys calling coyotes... nothing more, nothing less.

I used to put fox urine soak cotton balls in film canisters and set them up around me but I couldn't tell if it effected my success rate at all, and then I just kinda quit using them, but more out of laziness.

They have a program here where human waste is treated and turned into fertilizer for hay fields. When a field gets sprayed with this stuff it stinks awful bad for miles....and it is some of the best coyote hunting I have seen......I believe it is because thier is so much human scent that they have a hard time picking you out.
We shot a coyote over this stuff one time and it ran off......we tracked it across the field and the coyote at a dead run never stepped in the fertilizer..... I tell ya.....It dont matter what you do....he will smell you in the mix......The way you set up is KEY.
And if you use scents......just try and confuse the dogs long enough for the shot........not to draw him to you.....but to a good set where you can get the best of him.

Palegroe

This is just my theory but I use deer pee on my boots for a cover scent.  And again this is just what i concoted in my head but I use it because if a cat or dog crosses the scent of a deer it payes it no mind where the scent of another cat or dog that may have been raised in tinbuck to may raise some suspesion either good or bad and deer are about the most common thing in the outdoors. :rolleye:  which raises a question for this beginer, do you think coyotes and bobcats know fellow coyotes and bobcats and there odor in there area?
And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with Him.  Rev 6:8

Yes Palegroe, It is after all their house and they know everything in it and where it belongs, just as your wife would her own living room. Let a strange coyote in the house and the hunt will be on.

And I prefer to play the winds , rather than pack around extra weight. No way of knowing if scents are processed right or not  so it may be a bad or soso batch. Why trust in maybe when you know how to work the wind. Jimmie

I have never worried about cover scents, have seen to many drug dogs work.  If you can't fool them you sure aren't going to fool a coyote.  The only thing that concerns me is which way the wind is blowing and at times I'm not overly concerned about that either.
When they come for mine they better bring theirs

Yotehntr

I agree with John for sure. I used to follow all the wash cloths use cover scents all the "tricks"... saw a coyote wind me at about 120 yds nose up in the air and about turned himself inside out getting gone... I just try to watch the wind.
Yotehntr calls... put something pretty on your lips

I use to carry a bottle of Rabbit Urine... got it right from the rabbit cage.  Nasty.  :laf:
