Bills Custom Calls

After reading [so you want to hunt coyotes ] I beleive it is the way i am going to my stands. Not paying attention to the wind as closely as I should, once i am on the stand I have plenty of cover and setting still isn't much of a problem but if i already gave myself away coming into my stand my calling is pretty much pointless.keep that thread going lots of good info in there guys thank you very much!!!

If there is away to pin that post to the top of the page it deserves it, just my thought

Just a suggestion maybe post a pic of tracks and scat so a new guy can see the difference between coyotes and ol shep

Yeah, were putting them all in the Predator Primer grid on the Predator Hunting page bnccont.

There's some on tracks with pictures for comparison, and the "So you want to hunt coyotes" is under Beginner Basics.

THO Game Calls

Bill,

I've always felt that when you approach your stand, if they see you or smell you, it's all over.  If they hear you, you might be OK.  If they hear you TALKING - go home LOL.   If they hear you step on a branch or make some other sound that could be considered NATURAL in the woods, you might be OK.

I carry a turkey mouth call (check your local regs because in some places this is not legal) or a squirrel call and if I am by myself and break a twig or something else. I will let out a few short notes.

My thinking is

I don't want to let them know I am there until I am ready to let them know I am there and I don't want them to know I was there after I leave.

No matter what you do, you just can not hide from their noses.  You might fool thier eyes, or their ears, but I think they live by their nose.  Oh you can get them to linger some once in a while by confusiing them, but that is a topic for another day, and young ones might break every rule in the book, but the old wise ones didn't get that way by mistake.

And no matter what you do, even if you do EVERYTHING correct, some times, as they say, this stuff just don't work LOL.

I carry newbies along a lot. And the class room is out in the field. They ask more questions than a four year old. I am sure I have walked a couple of them within eighty yards of bedded coyotes a few times even with the talking. But the one thing I stress is make your route into the winds. If you have to back track do it on the trail you used to come in. Dont scatter your scent around more than you have to. I seriously believe they know their eyes and ears will lie to them, but their nose never will. And they trust that nose more than anything else.

It's one of the major reasons for scouting a place. You can get an idea of how you want to call it long before. Even if all you can do before calling it is look over some maps or photos, at least you will know how to move about the area. Jimmie

I believe getting into the area is very important. If you get busted before you even start its kind of like shooting your self in the foot. We make more noise than I like sometimes but with a extra person and a camera, its hard not to. We use hand signals allot to make sure everyone is ready and the camera can cover everything good. And I may walk a little further out of my way to get there sometimes to play it safe. If you are hunting the hardwoods or thickets it can be tough if there is not a logging road or path in there. I just slow way down and take my time, just like I would going into a deer stand.
