Eastern morning hunt

After a nearly sleepless night, about to go nuts with a sinus headache, I got up at 5:00 a.m. and decided to let my head hurt out in the fields, as it was too perfect a morning to miss.  My newbie buddy, Chuck Mattingly, picked me up at 6:15 and we headed to a new farm we had just received permission to hunt.  The wind was absolutely perfect for the lay of that farm, and I had a fair idea of how it was laid out from looking at it with Google Earth.  We slipped back a wooded hollow and up a hill until we were about 1,000 yds off the lane we parked on.  I put the Edge Coyote Decoy on a dividing ridge and hid the FX-5 in a clump of weeds about 3 feet from it, quartering into the wind.  Had old Chuck watching the downwind part of the field and edge of a big woods across from us.  When it got light enough to see, I howled a couple of times on my Sceery AP7, waited about a minute and howled again.  Waited about 5 minutes and turned on the FX-5 with the Hite Lone Howl, a couple of howls.  Waited a minute, and let him howl once.  Waited a couple more minutes and turned on the Hite Death Cries, and I saw a big pair come streaking across the next big field into the woods, and I figured they would show up slightly on the downwind side of the decoy.  I motioned to Chuck that two were coming, and sure as hell, the big male stepped out directly across from Chuck, about 100 yds away, looking at the decoy. Chuck did what all of us have done sometime in our hunting life, he squeezed off a shot on an empty chamber.  They heard that and were gone in a flash. He felt terrible, like we all have, and I had to soothe his feelings a bit. So we made another stand about 400 yds from there in a picture perfect spot.  I put Chuck up in one of those deer hunting tree houses where he could see a cleared patch for at least 500 yds. I got about 50 yds to his right, and put the Coyote decoy about 75 yds from me on the right edge of the farm road.  I hung a raccoon decoy with a decoy heart in his mouth, and put the FX-5 in a cedar bush just to his right, quartering into the wind.  Turned on the Hite lone howl for a couple of howls, waited a minute or two and went to the Foxpro Coyote & Rabbit.  Chuck could see a big pair coming full speed from the opposite end of the clearing. He was probably about to fall out of that damned thing at this point (lol). The female ran out on the edge of the farm road about 150 yds from me and locked up immediately on that Coyote decoy shaking that raccoon.  I put one of those 70 grain Blitz Kings dead center in her chest, and hit my preset P4, Hite Adult Coyote Distress, and here comes the big male. I stopped him when he was about 30 yds from his dead girl friend, and kept waiting for Chuck's rifle to bark, but it never did.  As it turned out, he was afraid he had the distance judged wrong.  I could have killed him easy,(The coyote, not Chuck) but once he left that time there was no getting him back. He probably smelled the blood of his dead lady.  So all in all, it was a great day for a sick old Possumal and a learning experience for his new buddy, Chuck.  I'll bet he don't sleep good tonight.   Great write - up and nice pictures.      I think we can all learn a lot from other member's success stories.  
   I'm not familiar with the Fox pro sounds you mention.  The "Hite Death Cries"   and the   "Hite Adult Coyote Distress"??    Are these sounds available from FoxPro.    I just got a Scorpion and really like it so far.  I'm kind of waiting to get a kill with it before writing up an evaluation report here.

The original plan was for Brent and J.D. to come pick up the pups and stay and hunt Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. Best laid plans of mice and men, etc., as J.D. couldn't get off and Brent's wife reminded him that yesterday would be Easter Sunday. So I used Brent's sounds on my FX-5 as I had originally planned.  I look forward to those two developing those pups and making video stars out of them.  Hope they get to come down and hunt too. Thanks for all the nice comments and I hope you all had great Easter Sundays as old Possumal did.

That's a really nice story and pics, Al.       I like the detail about how you set up, the sounds you use and the time between sounds.    It helps me visualize the set up.

Great hunt Al. I sure wish I'd of been able to ride down with Brent. It would have been a pleasure meeting you. It is monday morning and I haven't got to meet the pup yet    We will definately make a trip down there sometime for sure.

We'll do our best at makin stars outta them..LOL...From what I have been reading from many of you guy's here about Cur's, sounds like they are my kinda breed of dog.

Great story Al! Wish I could of stayed myself but you know when the boss says you better be home on Easter well, I had better be home! I have been gone allot anyway so it was time for some time with the wife and kids!


Pups are doing good! But man they are chewing on everything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
