I am back home from my hunting trip to SC.
I have been hunting turkeys for over 30 years and I am not complaining because I have shot my fair share of birds over the years but this without a doubt was the worst hunting trip I have ever been on. I hunted 7 of the 9 days I was allowed and never had a bird respond to my locator calls or my turkey sounds. I have had this happen on single days but never on a trip of several days. This all occured on public land.
I talked to other hunters and they expressed to me that they were having the same problems. The SCDNR web site said the turkey count was down this spring but I am sure there was a gobbler somewhere near my calling.
I saw only 2 birds the whole time I was there and they were hens along side the highway between the lake house and where we hunted.
My trip, other than hunting, was excellent. I spent time with my brother and 3 great friends.

Bills Custom Calls

Gene thats why it is called hunting turkey once you get them birds figured out they change the routine and now you have to hunt a different way to get them to respond  :laf:  maybe the birds are late strutting their stuff this year  I thought they were early last year but that is just my opinion

Sound like you had a good time with Friends and Family though

Bill, in the past while down there I could most always go to the creek bottoms, sit my butt down and sometimes pull in a gobbler or a jake. That didn't even work this trip.

Yes, I had a great time with family and friends.

The important thing is that you had fun Gene.   Too bad you got whipped like a loose bladdered pup when he hears you turn in the driveway on the turkeys tho.

You said public land like it was different for you. Maybe there's just a whole lot of pressure where you were.

I didn't mean anything specific when i said "public land", just making a distinction between that and private property or leased land.

I hunted the LBL quota hunt last Thursday and Friday.  Thursday was a bust. Never heard a peep or saw a bird.   Friday I heard two gobbles at first light and then nothing.

The plus side was that I found an excellent spot to hunt coyotes in the fall.   Lots of sign.      It also had the most bobcat tracks I have seen at LBL.

Sounded like my kind of trip Gene  :yoyo:.  Good times, fresh air and BS are always the most fun to me .   [L] I lost eleven pounds talking at the LBL :wo:.  Glad you made it back to tell the tale .
I say what I think not think what I say.
