Example of a rubbed bear, this one crossing a river

I got a couple of days of bear hunting in this past week.  I saw seven, only one of which interested me enough to hike for a closer look, but he was gone when I got there.

The bear below is badly rubbed, unusual for this early as far north as he is.  He was right beside the road but started across the river before I got my camera out.



He is wet but you can see his long hair is gone exposing the slightly brown underfur on his rump, sides and legs.

That's exactly the color of it, in natural late afternoon sunlight with nothing done to the photo in any way.  It is tidal water, near the mouth of the river about 300 yards upstream from where it enters a saltwater bay.  At high tide it back fills the river up to level with the cutbank grass where the bear is feeding.  I was curious about the color of the bottom myself and suspect it is due to some kind of saltwater or brackish water moss or other rock scum plant.

Yeah, that is really interesting. So interesting, it distracted me from the bear. LOL
