OK all, I'm not up on all this computer stuff. All I know is I have what I believe to be a decent Dell laptop that's a couple years old, and it's getting slower and slower. Sometimes lately I can click on a topic and it'll sit there and sit there.... :madd: I do know, for what it's worth, the internet security that came with the computer expired a while back. So the way I understand it, I still have some protection, but nothing new, no new updates. So it could be I have some of that addware spyware crap on it or somethin.  :laf: So what are some things I can do to check it, clean it up, fix it etc. It has XP on it. I know there's a few of ya out there that know this stuff.  :innocentwhistle:  Thanks, Scott

Well one thing you can do is stop using Internet Explorer and switch to a decent browser like Mozilla Firefox (found here http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/). That should pick up your net speed.  It could stand a good clean up like remove unneeded files and check what is running in the startup services.

Do us a favor, download this and run it.

Paste the results from the logfile back in this thread. The output should look something like this:

Another thing to check when complaining about speed Scott, is other web sites. I know last night our board was bogging for some reason.
Check other sites and see if they load any faster before concluding your computer is slow

Oh looky, a gathering of computer geeks . I know just enough to get me by, I don't want to know any more than that. I think Jim can attest to that :eyebrownod:

You have a alot of unneeded programs running in start up. First try the Mozilla and report back if that doesn't help, I'll post the directions how to remove system startup processes.

Well I did two things and it seemed to help. One, the kids have the desk top down stairs all screwed up and lights on our wireless box were blinkin, I unhooked that for a bit to reset that. I installed firefox, it seems a little faster so far, but one thing I don't care for is the font, or letters. I can increase the font size, but they still seem kinda screwy to me. They seem skinnier or somethin. Can that be changed! Thanks for all the help so far. Scott

Now it won't let me log out..
Scott

FinsnFur

What's it say when you try to log out?

Under View on the top bar should have the option for increased text size.

Jim, sometimes it says nothing, I hit log out and my computer thinks for a second then nothin happens. Couple other times it says - An error has occurred. Session verification failed. Please try logging out and back in again, and then try again.

Yeah, it won't let me log out so, "please try loggin out and then back in again"  :doh2:  :laf:

Roach, I tried that, it will make them bigger, but the letters are still "skinny" if that makes sense.

The log out deal sounds like a cookie issue. Try clearing your cookies.
If your response includes "how do i do that?" ....let me know what browser your using.

That worked Jim. Still wished I could show ya what my letters look like now, compared to what they used to look like.
I tried to go to FnF under Internet Explorer, copying somethin and then posting it using firefox to show ya, but when
I went to post it, it automatically makes all the letters the same.

Do a screen shot.
Center what you want to take a shot of on your monitor and hit the (PrntScrn) button.

It'll most likely copy to the clipboard in a BMP format.
If you have photoshop or something beside windows paint, open a new file and paste into it. It will automatically paste in what you copied with the (prntScrn) button
