Painting a boat?

Well I need to paint an aluminum jon boat I picked up for me and the boy. Do any of ya have any experience in this department?

I'm guessing cleaning, priming and painting, but thats about it.

Have you thought of trying that new camo-clad ?  its a bit more expensive than paint but it sure does turn out nice.
Then again when and if it starts to tear you'll have problems.

When you prep it make sure its super clean and pick up the primer that made specifically for aluminum. 
Personally I'd just use krylon or  that way you can sand and touch it up when you want to, also I'd coat the inside bottom with a roll on truck bed liner.

Maybe some of the fisherman in here could be a bit more helpful, hope I helped a little.

Really think this one through.......Powdercoating is more durable. Aluminum is hard to get paint to stay on without propper prep. work. They used to sell duck boat paint in camo colors I do not know if they still do or not. Whatever you choose....use the propper primer or you will have problems down the road.  We paint aluminum at work every day and I tell ya ask at your local paint shop/store in great detail before you do it.
It must be very clean and free of even the grease of your hands. It must be primed with a propper primer...just primer will not do a long lasting job of it. If you do use regular primer, wipe the boat down with vinigar first to rough up the surface then wash clean and paint if you must.

Rick223 painted his. When I heard he was doing I thought to myself......ewwwwww boy this is gonna look nice with crap peeling off it and runs and everything else. Aluminum is just plain ole tough to paint.

But it turned out awesome, and I have yet to see any peeling or anything. You have to ask him what he used or did.

I don't know beans about painting, but it seems to me as though it would be a good idea to use some type of snorkel gear when painting the bottom of a boat.

I know we use a 2 part primer at work when we paint Aluminum I am not sure where we get and don't know that much about it,but the only way to get it off if need be is to sand it off

We get our primer from sherwin williams........sounds like the same stuff.

I have painted them before and the primer needs to be self etching to get a good bite on the aluminum then top coat I get the self etching at napa fairly good prices.
