I took the day off work yesterday and took my son out to help with banding geese for the first time. He was a little apprehensive at first, but once he got into the swing of things he was like an old pro. We banded 239 birds in 4 separate flocks. The biggest flock had 74 birds in it. Here are some pics of the fun....

Nice shutter burst there to capture the one being released :highclap:

Looks like a pretty good thing to get the boy involved with, and he had a good time doing it.

That looked like  to much fun to be legal :wo:.  My boys would get a Honk out of doing that.  Glad you took the time and then shared.

It does look like he is having a good time and he even remembered to wear his "camo" hunting boots.     Great pictures.

He had a ball until the last goose crapped all over his pants...that didn't set too well with him. :puke: He was dead tired by the end of the banding,  but it was well worth the doughnut and chocolate milk it cost me to bribe him out of bed at 06:30. The boots, well what can I say they are better than the red-eyed tree frog boots he had prior to those ones. He does have a little pair of LaCrosse boots too but I couldn't find them and we had to get going. He prefers his dragon boots anyway :iroll:

did you do any swabing for avian flu ?  great pics Steve, now chase em over this side of the state

Just to clear up any possible misconception, boots don't make the man, actions make the man and his work in the field showed what type of man he will become.

Jerry is fibbing..............steal the red boots when he's not looking and play dumb when they ask about them.  :innocentwhistle:

Very nice photos Steve, and a great chance for your son.  :congrats:

No we didn't do any flu swabs Vic...just info that is necessary for banding and that was it.

They spent last week banding Mourning Doves and are tentatively going to be banding ducks again in August. I'm hoping to be able to get to at least one more banding.

Great pics, Steve!  Looks like the little guy was enjoying himself.  He's got a big grin in that first pic.   :yoyo:

By the way, how do ya keep the geese from flying out of that open top pen?  No room for take off?   :wo:

Coulter

They are incapable of flight right now Semp. The adults are molting their feathers and growing new ones. The juveniles haven't quite got their flight feathers in yet. Another week or two and they'll all be flying again.
