I try to help with several charities throughout the year but don't talk about it much. I do almost all of it anomalously.

That said at Christmas I usually sponsor a family or two  through the health dept. This year Iam sponsoring a young couple with two small children and an elderly couple in there early 70's. While I was getting the list and choosing who I wanted to sponsor the lady told me the sponsorships had dropped off tremendously in the past few years.

So Iam asking if you can spare some time and a few dollars visit your local health dept and ask for a list of families or person you can sponsor this Christmas. It doesn't take much time or money to make a difference in someone life.

You are a good man with an obvious heart to match  :yoyo:.  I like to help as well and it isn't just money that is appreciated by those in need.  Food is one of the three essentials in life and we help where and when we can.
I say what I think not think what I say.

With this economy spinning out of control the way it is, there might be a lot of US on that list this year. :laf:

Scout Troop 172 is doing something very similar. Each scout adopted a "box". Inside that box we are going to fill it up with all kinds of needed things like toothbrushes, soap, Bible, towel, gloves, stocking hat, gift card to a store, paper towels, etc. This box will then go to an elderly person that is on the meals on wheels type list. The charity will provide the food whereas the scouts will provide items that these people need, but can't always afford to buy. It's a neat little idea.

Way to go Richard!!  :congrats:

alexys sunday chol class has adopted a family and we are collecting several items to give them.

i also make up several gift baskets and take in to a local nursing home.

i call in and they give me the names of people who do not ordinrily have family or receive a gift from anyone for Christmas.

i have a deal with a local store and they give me half off the items for the baskets so that really is a big help.
theres things like a small body mist and lotion for the women and aftershave and cards for the men as well as assorted fresh fruit and candy. either sugar free or not depending on the patient.

the kids help me asemble the baskets and pass em out. we usually sing a Christmas song with the people we distribute the baskets too.

sorry for going on but its really somehting the residents enjoy and it wouldnt be hard for a Girl scout or cub scout group to do.

they really appreciate the effort.

I tell you what...working in the field....ANYBODY can find themselves in the street...even rich people...I go visit the veterans in the vet home and raise hell with them on the holidays...because there someday might be me...and sometimes I go on thanksgiving and serve at the soup kitchen...I firmly believe if you help others less fortunate then you it comes around back to you one way or another ...and I also know the best 2 things in the world are your family and your health, especially comes home around the holidays.

I also hate the commercialism of christmas, but I can still remember being a little kid and not getting any presents and getting a food basket from the church or we would have had no dinner so CCP, maybe 20 years from now some little kid will remember a christmas you helped him/her have, kinda something to be proud of  :yoyo:

When my wife goes Thanksgiving and Christmas grocery shopping she buys three of everything, when she bakes she does likewise.   Then she goes to the Pastor of her church and gets the name of two needy families and we make sure they have plenty to eat.  She also buys clothes for their kids and plenty of toys.  She tells me that we are lucky that the Lord has blessed us as much as he has and we need to do likewise to those less fortunate.  She is a good woman and at times I have a hard time figuring out how I was lucky enough to find her.
When they come for mine they better bring theirs

A local butcher shop will take the deer we harvest & process them for the Salvation Army. I think my next deer will go there. And the best part is the meat stays in my County.

i found out a couple days ago a neighbor down the road is having some money issues right now and have applied for some assistance. hes been told by his drs he cant work...asbestos got him. he used to tear down buildings with asbestos in them.

Daniel got a deer a couple ights ago and we went down yesterday and asked them if they wanted it, its his 4th this season. His wife started to cry. it was a little uncomfortable but im very glad they can use the meat and that it was my sons idea to see if they needed it.
hes a good kid and im glad to see hes thinking of others and their needs.

theyre sposed to come get it today or tomorrow and im gonna help his wife work it up for the freezer.

the thing i worry about is the people that need help but are to proud or embarrassed to ask for help.i cant stand the though tof someone doing without the necessity.

we can all curtail our wants but there are thing we all need to survive also, ya know? foods one of them and ill feed anyone i know needs it, anytime.

we're gonna deliver the baskets to the nursing home the 23rd cause the kids are off school that day.this year its a little tight financially for us, with alexys and i being sick so much lately but we can and will keep our cpommittment to those less fortunate than us and remember we could always have it worse.

This is a good program NH F&G does, I wonder how many anti-hunters help feed those in need ?:

Hunt for the Hungry:
N.H. Food Bank Seeks Donations of Game Animals

CONCORD, N.H. -- New Hampshire's hunters can help the less fortunate by sharing all or part of their fall harvest with the "Hunt for the Hungry" program.  Once again this year, the New Hampshire Food Bank, based in Manchester, is collecting donations of whole or processed game animals for distribution to more than 350 food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters and group homes statewide.

Last year  the Hunt for the Hungry program took in a record 3,288 pounds of donated deer, bear, moose, duck and other game meat -- almost triple the 1,126 pounds donated by hunters in 2006.

The program offers packaging instructions and can pick up your meat donation.  To donate game, call Food Bank Operations Manager Michele Garron at (603) 669-9725.

If you're donating a whole deer or moose, you can bring it to Lemay & Sons Beef in Goffstown, N.H. (603-622-0022), and they will process it for the food bank at no charge.

"We are really counting on support from hunters and backyard farmers this year," said Garron, explaining that times have been particularly challenging for the Food Bank, with warehouse inventory levels continuing to remain critically low.  "Limited food donations, coupled with rising fuel costs, have tested our ability to meet the increased need we're seeing in communities across New Hampshire.  Donations of protein foods are especially hard to come by - that's a big need that the Hunt for the Hungry program helps fill."

A hunter herself, Garron hopes to be successful in the field this season so she can contribute some venison to the program.

"The Hunt for the Hungry program is a great way for hunters to share their harvest and help needy families get through the winter," said Glenn Normandeau, Executive Director of the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department.  "Wild game is a local renewable resource that is high in protein, low in fat and 100% organic - not to mention delicious."

I didn't get to put a deer towards the HFFH program yet but I'll take care of that hopefully after CHRISTmas.  In the meantime I fixed two roof leaks, the downspout & cleaned the gutters for an elderly neighbor. He asked how much $$ & I told him & his Wife how to dry the attic up & told them Merry CHRISTmas. Aint much but they sure were happy.

That's good stuff Glen.  :congrats:

NOW that is what Christmas is all about.  :eyebrownod:

I'm like about everyone else. Business has slowed and money is getting real tight, but we can always give of ourselves. That's better than anything wrapped in a bow most of the time......well, sorta. I wrapped myself in a bow for my wife last Christmas. She puked.
Guess I should have went to "Jareds".  :laf:

Thanks Bop. I try to help all of the elderly folks around here. It feels good to be able to do things for those that can't do them themselves.

We have a local food bank here in our community called the "Christian Cupboard". Every year my boys and I will cull wt doe from a couple Ranches and have the deer processed into ground (has to be a State certified processor in order for the food bank to accept) and then we donate the meat to the community food bank. Typically we're able to donate between 250-300 pounds of ground deer every season.

Since the wife and I are in the restaurant business, we're able to obtain bulk food items cheaper than going to Sam's, CostCo, etc. We supplement the donated deer meat with several cases of canned goods (corn, peas, carrots, soup, etc.). Not too many hungry folks in our community!
