Ok, the other day when the boy and I were out, we got to talkin with this old hen for a good 45 min just a tickin her right off.  All of a sudden she let out this gurgly type gobble.  Sounded like a young jake.  She did it twice.  I've been bird hunting since I was 12 and im gettin near 40 never hearing this before.
I gave my dad a call thinkin i had one up on him but he'd heard it a few times and said when they really pissed they make that call.

Any of you bird hunters heard this before ?   At one point I told the boy to click it on fire in case she had a beard lmao !!!

HaMeR

Never heard it but have heard about it happening.

Yes, I have heard / seen this twice in many thousands of hours hunting them in my life.
Thing is.....If you would have looked closely...... she probably had a small beard!  :holdon:  Which would have meant you coulda took her.... :doh2:

We have had a bearded hen on my place for 3 out of the last four years ( I did not see her this year)
I seen her gobble once and as she walked down the logging road away from me she paused and something rolled across the road behind her....... when I got up to leave I went to see what it was..... she dropped an egg and kept right on walking!   :laf:

I have had folks try and tell me that this would be impossible for a bearded hen to lay an egg........ :nofgr: Not SO! I seen it myself and they may or may not nest...... but they can lay eggs!

I got to see em breeding this year...... That was cool! I could not figure out what the heck that hen was doing till a gobbler jumped her.... :laf: :laf:

Good try, Vic!   But you ain't never gonna out-do Al.    :nono:

As for me, I have never seen a hen gobble.  Not saying they can't or won't, just saying I ain't never seen it.  But I have read about it happening on rare occasions.

Turkey hunting is something I have done a LOT of in my life and is a passion of mine ..... as is the property I own that lets me see them year round......
Anytime you want to see what I know about them ya just come on up and we will go.

I know a guy that shot a 12 point buck a several years ago and just as he was going down, two does came out of the woods, they got on both sides of him and held him up as they carried the buck off to safety. True story. The guy told me that within weeks of me killing my 14 pointer.

Every year when the season opens and we're meeting at my dads after the hunt I always hear a story of my uncle shooting a tom off the top of a hen and dad chewing him out for not letting the tom finish  :laf:

Heres a pic of my unlce and myself quite a few years ago before he went to the good lords hunting grounds.

Way cool Vic....... I woulda loved to have known him.

The same day I shot that gobbler dad got one of them new diamond scopes and missed a big beard.  As the morning went on both uncle dube and I were bustin him big time about it.  The next spot we hit he was pissy and bet me I wouldnt get the next one.
Dad got rid of that diamond scope, the thing was good if the bird was 30yds but if you got them in under 20 it was for crap.  I told him that what you get for puttin a 10x scope on a turkey gun LMAO..

( it wasnt 10x but I busted him about it being that  :eyebrownod: )

I think Alscalls should write a book on everything he knows about everything. There could even be a chapter on using smilies correctly.  :eyebrownod:
Just not sure if his book would be science fiction or comedy.  :alscalls: :alscalls:
