I headed back home to the NE Kansas calling contest last weekend.  The turnout was a bit bigger than expected.  There were 87 two man teams that were entered.  The line of people signing up seemed like it never quit.  The sport is definately growing.

My brother and I started our first stand in a place that we missed a couple in mid December.  The first stand was a bust.  So we moved another quarter mile east towards the middle of the section.  I pulled out the secret weapon.  My new THO open reed distress.  It was the first stand for this call.  I called about 20 seconds worth of bunny distress.  And out of nowhere, I see a some ears over the top of a terrace.  It was a bare winter wheat field, so I had no idea where this thing came from.  A few lip squeaks, and it was standing there about 50 yards.  Bang.  And it ran off.  Brother stood up and bang.  Keeps on running.  So I rack in another, get it in the sight, close my eyes, cross my fingers, and toes, and squeeze.  Bang Pop.  I look up, and it is laying there.  Holy S.   Range finder said 164 yds.  My first one killed on the run.  I can't believe it.  It must have been the call.

Small little female.

Third, 4th, and 5th stands are a bust.

6th stand, and it is around 2:00 pm.  Windy, Windy, Windy.  Must have been around 25-30 mph winds.  I pull out the Red Desert mouthpeice for a little added volume in the wind.  About 15 seconds of distress, and one comes a rolling in from the far hill.  And he is a haulin some tail.  It was 1/2 a mile away when it first popped over the hill.  The wind is going hard from left to right, so I stayed on the distress to keep him from circling down wind.  He gets into the thick stuff below us, and starts to circle around.  I stop him, and Bang Pop.  DRT.  80 yards.

Green line is the route he took.  Red is the wind direction.

Medium sized old male.  Didn't have many teeth left.

That was the last coyote we saw the rest of the day.  Stands 7-12 were all dry.

Total of 27 coyotes taken out of the 87 teams.  Really windy conditions all day.  The female in the first pic took the prize for the smallest coyote.

Thanks for reading.

Sounds like a bunch of the teams just stayed home if there were only 27 coyotes killed. You guys did good by stickin it out and callin hard. Way to go! :yoyo:

Great pics, Brian.

Especially the middle one. I like coyote route pics.

You guys didn't do too bad at all.

I don't know where I got the 27 coyote number from.  It was actually 62 coyotes killed, 274 coyotes seen, and 2 bobcats taken.  Most of the coyotes were seen in the morning before the wind picked up.

First place team took 5, second place 4, third shot 3.  They paid money to the top 10 teams.  We placed slightly out of the top 10.

We were lucky as hell.     I was watching to the right and my brother was watching to the left.  We didn't expect it at all to come from that direction.  It had to be in the next canyon over the hill.   I'll take luck anyday.

Nice pics....   Wonder why the yote didnt follow that bottom, instead of coming over the hill like that???

The weather has been horrible here, well below zero, which isnt too bad, but 30mph winds on top of it.

kyotebuster

what did you shoot them with?

It is a Ruger M77 22-250 topped with a Burris Fullfield II 3-9X40.  Under it is a Harris bipod.

It's been pretty good to me, except that is weighs a ton because of that bull barrel and bench rest stock.
