Went out this morning 8/28/2010 for a couple of stands.  I have had a long dry spell with the coyotes, but that ended with a bang on our second stand this morning.  We got set up for the first stand at about 7:00 AM in an area were we have called in coyotes in the past.  First stand was here . . .

I set up the Scorpion behind and between my buddy and I.  We were about 75 yards apart.  Started out with some fawn distress on the scorpion and on the wvhillbillyhowler calls.  Did some barks and howls.  Then some ki yi s.  No response.  So after about 35 minutes we moved to another area several hundred yards out the ridge.  I had Mike set up watching down in the holler where we had heard and seen coyotes in the past.   wvhillbillyhowler has been working with me to fine tune some of my calling.  Just the day before he showed me how to make growling sounds and do better barks on his hand calls.  So on this second stand I decided to just use the hand calls and not fool with the Scorpion e-caller.  After a few fawn in distress calls we had some cows come in near where Mike was set up.  After a few minutes I howled a couple of times.  Almost immediatly a pack of three or four coyotes responded down in the next holler beyond where I was standing.  I told Mike to move over toward where we heard the coyotes.  I also moved about 30 yards to where I could see towards where we had heard the coyotes.  Here is what I could see . . .

I did some ki yi s and tried some of the growls Jon had been working with me on just the day before.  Here is where I was set up . . .

In just a couple of minutes I saw movement just to the left and a little above the muzzle of my gun in the first photo above.  There is a trail that runs along a fence line there.  I got the scope up and lined up on the coyote.

The coyote was about 75 yards away.  I had the sun behind me.  When the gun cracked the coyote went down.  I started back on the call with some more ki yi s.  In just a little bit another coyote came down the trail and stopped just five feet from the dead one.  BANG and the second coyote was down!!

Here they are just as they piled up . . .

Here is the first one . . .

And the second one . . .

And the hero shot . . .

And Mike with the coyotes . . .

What a great morning.  Thanks for Jon hillbillyhowler for his patience teaching me how to use his great mouth calls and howlers.

Good story and Pics Jim. :bowingsmilie:  I like it when they land close together like that .  Something for the guys getting into the sport to pay attention to is the fact you didn't just shout out and run up there :congrats:.  Also the fact that a good trail is always something to watch.
I say what I think not think what I say.

Good set up with good results, I like the idea of moving in closer when you heard them howling I think moving in makes them think that that the Coyote they heard howling is moving closer to them, Good plan and good results. Done that a couple of times myself.  :congrats:  :congrats: cc

Great story. And I agree with Barry, you did a very smart thing by sitting tight and continuing the stand. It will pay off more times than you think. Jimmie

Good way to spend the morning, congratulations to you and your friend.  I too continue to call after the first one is on the ground, and I always use pup in distress.
When they come for mine they better bring theirs

Born and raised in the southern highlands of Appalachia, I'm just an ol' country boy who enjoys calling coyotes... nothing more, nothing less.

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the kind comments.  I was really excited!!  That's one thing I really enjoy about coyote hunting, seems like these two got me just as fired up as my first one!  They are really tough here in the East, at least for me anyway.  Sometimes I think luck plays about as much a part in killing one as any skill I might bring to the stand.  Of all the ways those two dogs could have come in they came right in front of my gun.  I hardly had to move the shooting sticks!!  These were my first coyotes called exclusively with hand calls and my first double.  Hopefully it won't be so long til my next one??   Here's another shot of an excited hunter . . .

Thanks again for all of your support.  It wouldn't be nearly as much fun if I didn't have all you guys on this board to share my excitement with!!
