i just bought this gel thats a mix of a hot doe and acorns, ive never hunted over any scent and was wondering how well it works out for you folks

:wo: I personally have never had any luck over artificial scents, especially with a chic and nuts!
Take your kids hunting and you won't have to hunt your kids!

I dump a little Buck Jam on the ground to stop them for a shot. They seem to prefer the Acorn over the Apple. Even in an old apple orchard I hunt. The does tear the ground up & the bucks just walk up to it & sniff around it & lick at it some.

Best two scents I have used..............  Corn in a feeder................ and I use my hat on a trail just out of range that I dont want the deer on......... If they use that trail they see/smell my hat and run down by me to hide....... :laf:  I have done that a few times..... :eyebrownod:

I do agree something to stop them for the shot is nice........... but when the bucks get rutty they dont seem to want to stop for nothing short of a real hot doe......... :hahaha:
Right now we have so many white oaks dropping acorns the deer prefer them over the corn feeder so I will just move my stand to them when need be........

I'm not sure I've seen one that's mixed a "Deer" scent with a "food" scent in the same bottle.
What's the name of it? I've used different scents in the past, I've had mixed results. I've used
estrus scents on a pad on my boot, or a drag, and have had bucks come right to my stand like a
bloodhound with his nose to the ground, then I've had the same scent on a pad hanging from
a branch at "nose" level, and have had bucks walk within feet of it and never even slow down
or pay any attention to it. I've used vanilla in a little spray bottle and sprayed it on a little bush
on the trail to stop em either to get a shot, or to get em on my trail camera.

I wouldnt use it til the rut start in u area or they wont show up. If u shoot a buck and its tarsals are dark , cut them off and tie them to u boot and drag them to your stand . I  yr had a whole line of does follow my steps to the stand following that tarsal trail.e had some triple doe in heat in a pump spray bottle that worked good . would spray on the air with a grunt call working and called in a nice 7pt and  doe .

alright, so how do i know when the rut is hard? because in NY the rifle season doesnt start til the 20th of november

pitw

One good way of telling is when you see a doe go across a piece of property and you go stand in her track and buck comes along her trail and you are the one who has to move.  I don't know about New Yawk but here that time frame is at the end of the rut almost.

Peak rut does vary a bit,are you wanting to hunt the peak to better your chances on a monster buck?
In Ohio you can pretty much figure on peak in Nov between the 2nd and 3rd week, but not always
If fish and game is starting rifle season about the 3rd week I am only guessing they figure you're peak rut to be the end of Oct first part of Nov

most state usually set up a hunting season around peak rut activity. It is usually sometime in november . you can usually tell because u will see more deer dead on side of the road and more deer moving during other times of the day instead of morning and night . i will do some research for ya

vayotehowler

in my last post i meant rifle season around the rut so more hunters are succesful. here is a link to where hunters report on rut conditions .http://forums.northamericanwhitetail.com/2010rutreport
