Jeb has a point. 

But when using it in an open ended container your not building pressure with it using only small amounts and making sure you turn it off and keep the "muzzle" in a safe direction you will be "safer". I have heard of people using propane but I have never done it.

I know they make devices for scaring away birds that use propane to make a bang. But I have never looked at one of these or seen plans for one so the exeact mechanics of it are not kown to me .

If you use the Calcium carbide. It can make it into a repeater . As long as the carbide has water to react with it will keep making gas . Just touch the flash hole with a flame again after a few moments and the carbide will have made another shot of gas. When I was a kid I used to make a canon that fired a croquett ball. Using a section of rain spout a coke can and some calcium carbide . I could launch one a fair distance and make a really cool bang. If ya had enough water in it you could launch a ball at a rate of about a ball a minute for about 5 shots. Then the water would run out and ya had to re wet the rock and get anouther few shots

If you dont want to mess with a gas, [wich as jeb pointed out can be a very risky endevor ] the pyrodex may be the best route if ya just got to find out what a shot of powder in a post driver will do,

Just build a potato cannon. Mine is made of pvc and will hurl a spud way over a hundred yards using cheap hair spray as a propellant. Makes a very pleasant "BOOM" when touched off. Check out youtube for examples.

If your just wanting to make noise a potato gun would be easier more portable and most likley easier and safer to use.

In fact if ya dont wnat to use hair spray you can use caribe and water and set it up with a electronic ignitor off a gas grill. then ya got a repeater. Witht he proper amoutn of carbide and water you wouldnt even have to load a potato in it to make it go bang.

I made 3 of those cannons. I have 1 slagmaker has 1 and a good frind of mine has the therd .  Ween I made the cannons the brechplug is swatted then weled .The baral was heated to 475 degree befor the truens were welded on . my frind and I have prufed his cannon with 1/2 pound of bulleye smokeless powder. It has a more of a sharp crack !
