My apologies, but it was obvious no one was thinking three dimensionally.... felt a clue was needed before folks gave up too easily.

FOstology,

That's the purpose of the quiz, to flush the mush out.   Nobody has cried wolf, so please respect the other members and let them run with it.   As I said, when some give up I'll start feeding them clues.

In the meantime, if you think you know the "complete" answer, send me a PM as suggested above.   Semp thought he did, but didn't.   I'm sure there is others as well just holding off so eveyone can play the game.

Thanks

Since you drug me in to it, Ladobe, perhaps it depends on which answer you favor.   :innocentwhistle:

Maybe some clarification is needed Ladobe?

Three Dimensional / technical

Practical

And if practical..... Alaska and Hawaii included, or just the lower 48 (CONUS)???

George Ackley

1. Which US state is the farthest?
can it be trick question

Semp,
Not dragging you into it, just stating fact.   Even those that have seen it before like you and I didn't get it all right the first time around, and may not remember what is.   There is only one correct answer as the quiz was offered.

FOs,
More than enough information was given as is without any further clarification.    As I said when folks give up I'll give them pointed clues that will help them.

George,
Nope, not a trick question.

Since Ladobe has informed me that I'm incorrect, he shouldn't have any qualms with me posting my answer given:

Since the Earth is not flat and is divided in latitude and longitude:
Alaska is the state that is farthest North, East, and West
East AND West you say? How is that possible??
Because the Aleutian Islands cross the 180° meridian (International Date Line). Some of the island are in the Eastern Hemisphere (east of Greenwich/Prime Meridian) and the others in the Western Hemisphere.

Hawaii is farthest South.

George Ackley

fos i said that answer and you called me chuckle heads
and i didnt look it up  :nofgr:

East Alaska
West Alaska
North Alaska
South Hawaii

and yes i give up. it was a  good quiz though

Well, I guess I might as well call the quiz, with no winner since folks are not following the simple rules.

FOs, got half of it right except for the IDL part (which has to do with what day of the week only), so he gets half a star.

The only correct answer:
East â€" Maine OR Alaska
West â€" Alaska AND Alaska
North â€" Alaska AND Alaska
South â€" Hawaii AND Hawaii
Why â€" Depends on your perspective.

To explain…
If from the physical perspective - Maine, Alaska, Alaska, Hawaii
If from a cartographic perspective â€" Alaska, Alaska, Alaska, Hawaii.

The difference of the cartographical convention perspective is because the 180th Meridian divides the east/west hemispheres on our side of the world, and it runs through the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, making part of those islands the farthest west and part of them the farthest east by “longitude” from the Prime Meridian, Greenwich, England.

The International Date Line follows the 180th Meridian “mostly”, but has political zigzag’s to accommodate uniformity in some places.   Without those variances, places like the Aleutian Islands would have different dates depending on which side of the 180th they are on.

So, depending on your perspective, physical OR cartographical…

Easternmost point
Sail Rock, Maine (66°56’49.3”W) OR Attu Island, Alaska (172°54’34”E)
Westernmost point
Attu Island, Alaska (172°54’34”E) OR Amatignak Island, Alaska (179°8’55”W)
Northernmost point
Point Barrow, Alaska (71°23’20”N)
Southernmost point
Ka Lae, Hawaii (18°54’39”N)

Thanks for trying folks, hope you had some fun.

Here is what I PM'd you:

QuoteHey Larry

Alaska, Alaska, Alaska, Hawaii

A small part of one of Alaska's Aleutian Islands crosses the 180 degree longitude and thus is actually in the eastern hemisphere.

I saw that quiz a long time ago and remembered how bad I blew the answers.  :eyebrownod:

So how is my answer incorrect unless you are pulling a trick answer?

And by the way, Attu Island is not the eastern most point.  It is Pochnoi Point, Semisopochnoi Island, Alaska 51°57′42″N 179°46′23″E  by longitude.   So even your trick answer isn't correct.   :alscalls:

And yes I just looked that up after you told me my answers were wrong.

Ladobe

Semp,

All you've got to do is read my answer you just quoted.

Yours given via PM was wrong because it only acounts for the cartographic perspective and is incomplete without the physical perspective.   I told it it was partially correct.

Touche on the Easternmost cartographic perspective - you are of course correct.   It was on my list of several extreme points to chose from, but between handling PM's and answering questions I copy and pasted the wrong one to my answer.    No Einstein here either.

  Hell I don't know if I passed with flying colors or if I shoulda reset the trap for these damn feral cats that are running rampant on the farthest North side of my house which faces to the South  when the World has turned 180*.     Maybe. I think.    :alscalls: :alscalls:

Too technical for me Larry but I enjoyed reading & trying to understand it all anyhow.  :yoyo: :yoyo:
