Badger Hunt from July 2011

Here is another hunt that is from July 2011. It was needless to say a GREAT DAY of hunting.

Timber Butte Outdoors ProStaffer Brendan LoCicero (badgerman) and I went hunting this morning, after a couple days of bad weather, it was a good morning, clear, sunny, and warm, with a slight breeze, perfect conditions for badger hunting. By noon the wind had began to howl, and the badger had reteated back to the comfort of the underground.

Although we didn't see any other hunters or anyone else for that matter, It seems that we were not the only ones out enjoying the nice day. We saw all kinds of wildlife, badgers, coyotes, antelope, snakes, and a bunch of Burrow Owls.

We saw 9 badgers, we killed 9 badgers. These were all taken with the spot and stalk method.

WOW!
The badger was designated as our official state animal back in 1957. Hence Wisconsin's nick name the "Badger State"....and the badger symbol on our state flag....aaaaaaaaand they are a protected species here.
So I'm a little offended here, Gary.












Ok I'm just kidding. That actually looked like a dang good day and I do WISH we could hunt them here.

Those things sure have some claws for digging and those teeth don't look to friendly either.  All in all they have a reputation as being pretty nasty.  Only have seen them in zoos and a couple that have been hit on the roads around here.  They are protected here too.

The badger in Idaho is considered a furbearer by the Idaho Fish & Game, but the season is open year round, without limit.

So, after coyote season has ended, and the weather is warm, warmer, hot, we go out and begin filling days and truck hunting badgers, we will sometimes call them, other times we spot and stalk. No matter how you hunt them, they are fun to hunt, let alone being out in the desert all alone.

This day was pretty special, normally 2-3 badger days is the norm. But we sure didn't pass up the opportunity to fill the truck bed. There are literally thousands of the buggers here. They sometimes winding up in backyards of homes on the out lying areas. Imagine waking up one morning and finding a badger mound and hole in your beautiful manicured lawn or flower bed!
