Aldog and I scheduled to meet around 6pm yesterday. We loaded all our gear and went to check our rifles briefly. After a few shots and a little smack talk we headed out after a summer coyote. Our first set up was a blind set, meaning neither of of us had ever seen the property. We set up in a small field behind the landowners home, it was divided by a treeline hiding the house. As we were walking in we both noticed scat and tracks. We knew coyotes had been in the area recently. We set up in the small overgrown field. I called for almost 30 minutes but was unsuccessful. We packed up and flew outta there.
I thought of another place that I haven't hunted since the competition. We high-tailed it over there and drove in and just as I was getting ready to park, I noticed a farmer out in the field working on a tractor. This was bogus too, we peeled out.
We headed from Cowpens to Chesnee with only 30 minutes of daylight left. We arrived at a large hayfield with big bottom fields. The field was cut weeks ago but has already grown to knee length. Scattered around the field, haybales. We knew we were really punched for time so it looked like we were speedwalking into the bottoms. A small short cut road cut the rounded corner of the upper part of the field. Its really good because it allows you to sneak up and peak into the field below undetected. As we approached my eyes were quickly scanning the tops of all the haybales. I noticed movement very quickly on the opposite side of the field and quickly determined it was a coyote. The coyote was sniffing around the bases of the haybales, one by one. Looking for mice and/or anything else it could find. I quickly adjusted my shooting sticks and took aim. When I squeezed the trigger the rife reported and almost immediately followed by a loud thump. The bullet found its mark and the coyote went down immediately. The shot was around 200 yds. The coyote fell into the tall grass and out of sight. We decided to leave our gear on a haybale near where I took the shot and walk down and get coyote, then go get the truck.

Aldog

Female, already weened her pups, no milk in her sacks.

Now, you may think this story has a happy ending but it doesn't. Remember our gear? We walked directly to the truck from the coyote. We then drove the truck to retrieve our gear, vests, caller, shooting sticks, seats ,etc. I drove the truck right up to the haybale so Aldog can get out and get everything. First word out of his mouth is, "David, back up the truck is on your vest!" I thought, "Oh No!" because whats in my vest? my FoxPro Fury. Yup, I ran right over it. We pulled out the caller and it was fine, wheew! what a relief, but this is not a one piece caller. Nope, theres a remote. Pulled it out, completely crushed, the screen was all mashed the antenae bent and the round dial bent too. I could have puked.
I sucked up my loses and went and loaded up the coyote. We later did a little howling and located several more packs for next time. I guess it will be hand calling for a while.
I called FoxPro today and spoke to Zack. He was very helpful in saying I may not need to buy a refurbished remote for $150 but to send in mine and they will inspect it and could possibly repair it. He also mentioned to send my unit in and the would inspect it and update it as well. i shipped it out today and hoping for a speedy recovery.
I enjoyed hunting with Aldog, it seems like we were always laughing and having a good time. I look forward to it again brotha!

Thats a nice looking coyote too. Nice job picking him off........no calling involved. :congrats:
I got a bad feeling the minute I read,...

....but I figured it was either going to be gone, or you'd see three coyotes standing side by side watching you. :doh2:

Too bad on the Foxpro. Hopefully they get you fixed up.
I'm not a Foxpro fan so I probably would have pulled ahead a couple feet and then backed over it one more time for good measure. :eyebrow:
