I bought a home owner 20" Poulan from lowes. It came with 2 good chains surprisingly. It blew up & I bought a 21" or 22" Echo  . That saw came with 1 very good chain. I bought the Echo because it would accept my shorter Poulan bar & chains & make it easier on the motor. Haven't had a need for an aftermarket chain but I can see where you will for the wood burner. Glad you found a good chain. That will make it eaiser to feed the burner.  :yoyo: :yoyo:

I got a couple of heavier duty chain saws.. Always hated sharpening the chains.  So a few days ago while in the shed, I found a half dozen chains sitting on a shelf.  They were good, but in need of sharpening.  So on whim I took a drive up to a new Harbor Freight Store about 15 miles away.  I purchased a $39 electric chain grinder, then applied a 20% off coupon.  Figured for $30 if I got a few chains done I would be ahead of the game.  Well, Son of gun, the thing actually did a good job!  I sharpened up 4 complete chains in a short time.  The tool is not of high quality, and looks like a small miter saw.  But it did the job.  They had a couple reviews on youtube that explained the basics.  Anyway, take a look at them once the dull chains pile up.

No more chain saw duties for me.  Made a list of "things" to sell because of the move, chain saw dang near the top of the list. :laf:
When they come for mine they better bring theirs

I heard of it but never used one.  According to this video the chain is super easy to sharpen.

The Harbor Freight sharpener  does do a very good job.

Never used power sharp. But I buy a spool of Oregon chain every other year. Really like the semi chisel skip tooth. Less teeth to sharpen.

For some reason I would think that you and your crew would cut more wood than Jim.  When you have your next forest fire remember to call Jim if you are going to drop any trees around the railroad tracks.    :iroll:

I read on a saw forum that the United States is the best place to buy a "disposable chainsaw". Apparently manufactures witnessed American consumers scarfing saws off the shelves based on the saws bar size. Ewwww! that one has a 20inch bar! It has to be good! Therefore they started putting them on shelves with small motors and over sized bars, and they sell like hotcakes.

Thats why you can buy a saw with a 42cc motor and a 18inch bar. To anyone who knows anything about saws....this is pretty much an unheard of combination. A 42cc motor is not going to run a 18" bar efficiently at all, and the saw is burned up in no time. These are what they call home owner models.

Standard rule of thumb is a motor/bar ratio of 3:1 or 4:1. Apparently Americans dont look at the motor size, but if you buy a saw with a 42cc motor, then using the 3:1 ratio rule, the ideal bar length would be 42 divided by 3 which is 14. But you wont see that combo on MOST saws in American stores, unless you buy a Stihl or other TOP brand.

The one I bought has a 35cc motor and they sold it with a 16" bar.  :holdon:  :iroll: While theoretically it should have a 12".
I'd like it to last a little longer then they are anticipating, and since I'm up on their little game, the first thing I did was take off the 16" bar and the safety chain that came with it, and throw it right in the trash. :eyebrownod:
I shoulda bought a 12" bar but I bought a 14" instead and with a different cutter and rake set up then standard chains...I'm hoping it's a little easier on the saw. Time will tell.
The Power Sharp, unlike standard chains, is sharpened from the TOP as shown in the video. It's a totally different chain that some say was designed for homeowners who cant or wont sharpen a chain :laf:
I dont know.... my local saw shop guy who I know from town here uses one all the time and he likes it.
I picked up three pickup truck loads of tree trunks last night after work and hauled em home and dumped them in the driveway, that needs to be bucked up and split. Elm, Mulberry, Ash, and Oak...so were gonna find out :eyebrownod:

Maybe I'll get lucky that the biggest ones in the back there are only 16 to 18 inches in diameter :wo:

I like my 460 stihl  with a 32 in bar. I do not have to bend over to cut wood that is on the ground. I use semi chisel chain and I use a goofy file instead of a round file. I have run larger saws but that is for the younger guys. My personal saw is a 441 stilh with the head off of an 461 stihl. Took a dremal tool and polished the intake and exhaust. Then double ported the exhaust. She's a screamer after I built it the first tree I cut I went right through my holding wood. The tree came right back at me. Learned not to be so cocky.

May have to look in to getting The Power Sharp for my Dad. I seen him out in the shed sharpening a few chains the other day.

Thanks for the tip off...
