Wife's family has fired up the BBQ pit and have the tunes blaring. Tequila, margaritas, and Corona's are flowing freely. A bunch of drunk Mexicans being loud and boisterous as they celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

For those that don't know, the Mexican community celebrates more than 365 festivals each year.  Cinco de Mayo is just one of them....

Although Cinco de Mayo is a big celebration in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is MUCH more popular here in America.

What exactly is Cinco de Mayo, and why is it celebrated?

Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise was manufactured in England.  In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York.

This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico.... But as we know....the great ship did not make it to New York....The ship hit an iceberg and sank .... and the cargo was forever lost....

The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery .... were disconsolate at the loss....

Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning which they still observe to this day.... The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th.... and is known....of course....as Cinco de Mayo....

Tiene un significado diferente para mí... un nuevo comienzo.

Cinco de Mayo 45 years ago yesterday (1968) is an easy date for me to remember, and it was on a Sunday that year as well.   I was on a San Francisco beach that morning catching some rays and trying to catch some zzz's when an exceptional lady came over and sat down in the sand to talk to me. One of those things where our paths should have never crossed, but they did, and we spent almost 35 years together before we both decided to follow new paths.
