The funny part is she had them up there for 4 nights and after the skunk was dead yesterday she wasn't up there this morning.  She would go up on the first roost and cluck then the little darlings just followed.

little darlings

You are referring to what most people call a future supper aren't you?  You keep going like this and they won't end up in the frying pan and will be sleeping inside the house this winter.

Then you are good to go - even give them names.

Barry, While I have been around chickens I have never raised and kept any.  Are chickens smart enough to actually know their name should you give them one.  I know that when I would feed my grandmother's chickens they knew that 'chick, chick, chick' meant they were being fed and came running.  But I don't know if you just called Ralph or Sara if one would come.  If you haven't tried this in the past it might be a good experiment for you to work on when you are just sitting around looking for something to keep you out of trouble.

Jerry I read your question to the family and the all said that the birds can tell individual names.  Jim the turkey certainly knew his name. :alscalls:

The one that was dead left some problems behind :doh2:.  I come home from spraying today and as I walk to the house the wife meets me at the door with my old .22 with peep sights.[scary to say the least] :whew: Says she was going to go shoot a couple baby skunks but hands me the gun instead.  So I sneak down to where the little ones had come out where she cut the grass and with two shot's got.

Should still be papa le-pew around somewhere.
Are they able to 'juice' when they're that small?
I've shot a few (mature ones) and have NEVER been able to hit the 'lights out' sweet spot.

Off topic, but my skunk story.

My grandfather used to hand-hunt (didn't have a gun) skunks and always told me that if you can get their hind legs off the ground they can't spray.  He would dig out their den, grab them when they would finally take off, and then hit them in the head with an iron pipe to kill them. He said that it usually worked very well and I asked what happened with it didn't and he said he would have the smell of skunk oil for several days.  He would leave his clothes outside and several nights of frost would take care of most of the smell.  Those were different days.  I can not imagine many people spending several hours digging out a skunk and running the risk of being sprayed for probably a 25 cent hide.  But as I said, those were different days.

Dave we probably took dad out two weeks ago.  Little ones like that have the scent too.  When I was a little feller[must been 4 or 5 as we were still in the old house] I had walked the mile to the house of the little old lady who babysat for me sometimes as she made a great cookie.  On my way home a mommy and 6 little ones that went in a culvert and of course I followed.  Upon arrival home as I walked in the house like a mini Kit Carson my mother grabbed me and through at the screen door.  Good thrower she was as I outside and the screen door frame never moved. That woman made it tough to like her. :argh:
