Got some squatters
« on: May 22, 2020, 11:38:10 PM »
Went out to water my hanging plant on the porch tonight. I reached up under the leaves and stuck my finger down in the soil to see how dry it was. A bird flew out.
I bought the plant to attract hummingbirds to the feeders. Its a bright red something or other.
The bird taking flight did not omit the well-known and coveted humming sound of the hummingbird wings LOL. But instead it was a feathered flutter.
Closer inspection revealed this! Now I'm wondering if I should let the plant die so I don't disturb them or what.

Keep it watered and it won't bother them at all.

You don't think they'll mind Barry? Not worried about the water because obviously it does rain in nature. But the constant human intrusion. Wondering if that will send her away abandoning the eggs.
I'm guessing this is a house finch.

Did you abandon your kids cause of a mild distraction?   Birds won't either.  :nono:
Just don't get the eggs to wet. :naughty:

As has been said, watering the plant won't hurt. Actually the bird who laid the eggs are counting on the plant growth to hide the nest and keep it safe.  As a side note, the water in the planter will actually help the egg shells when it comes time to hatch.  Small birds like yours (quite often a member of the finch family) should hatch in about 14 days and in another 21 days the babies will look full size and be ready to be on their own.  When you are watering after the babies have hatched try to make some noise and water from the other side of the hanger from the nest.  That way they will hunker down rather than become startled and try to fly before they are ready.  You can usually catch a 'fall out' baby that isn't injured and put it back in the nest.  Unlike some animals the mom won't abandon the nest when they smell humans.

Great pic!  We have a similar situation.  A bird built a nest in our hanging basket of flowers right beside our front door, at chest level.  She now has four eggs and for the past three days has started sitting on them constantly.  Leaves almost hide the nest, and it is several inches above the dirt level.  My DIL waters the flowers every day but doesn't get water on the nest, just a spout over the rim of the basket/pot to water the dirt. So far, the mother bird has hung in there.  She sits tight when we go in and out the door unless someone gets close and peers in.

Grandson Cody says the bird is an Oregon junco. Small brown bird with black head, the size of a small sparrow.

My computer connection is working so well this early morning I may try a pic.

I agree with all that was said.  Have had them nest on our porch and on the post on the patio, never stopped watering our plants.
When they come for mine they better bring theirs

Them old birds can get pretty ornery when they have a nest. I had a Robin nesting on the back patio last spring that kept attacking everybody I was getting about ready to blast the little bastard and then they finally grew up and left. We have a pair of Cardinals nesting under the back deck this year.

Dang Robins. I have to turn my truck mirrors in each spring because the stupid males will fight themself in the mirror while crapping all down the side of the truck.

Boyyyy..interesting stuff
Ok....I won't worry it then. The Nest is all the way to one side of the planter, so I can water without going near or even getting the eggs wet. Perfect thanks guys

My son watered the hanging plant yesterday with a spray nozzle on the hose and got the eggs wet.  The mama bird had them dry in minutes and has kept on sitting on them so I'd guess they are OK.

If that other egg doesn't hatch in a day or two you can take a spoon and remove it.  The little ones will be able to use the room and it will lessen the chance of it rotting and getting broken.
