I hunted in a invitational squirrel hunt today at LBL. I usually try to hunt in it every year.. Anyways there were about 15 pairs of guys that hunted it. Times were from daylight to 11 am. I made one den tree all morning.. I never seen a squirrel...... When i checked in at 11, i found that most everyone had the same luck.. We had 3 pairs that brought in 1 squirrel a piece, and 2 pair that brought in a limit of 12.    One of the limits was also heavy with one 20# bobcat. :yoyo:  Where are the squirrels at LBL?    Who knows, it might have been just a bad day.... or was it??

It was about 35 this morning and is 51 now..We have rain in the forecast for tomorrow. It was pretty well overcast all morning..I just figured that the conditions would have helped the hunt... boy was i wrong   i guess they were

I wish to heck I had known the tree nuts were lose in there today with their hunt. Talking about screwing the pooch for me :rolleye: Damned dogs and trucks were still everywhere I went this afternoon. Couldn't find a coyote track for truck tracks and dog tracks. Winds were up enough by sundown I couldn't get answers to the howler either. I just got in from up there. BTW, I saw two fox squirrels and a grey and didn't even have a doggie . Jimmie

Jimmie, i went bowhunting over there last wednesday in area 10 and had coyotes all aaround me at dark.. It was kinda funny because i didnt see any deer or squirrels, but i did see coyotes.. I think they pick which one of them want to move that evening.. i am thinking about going in the morning, bowhunting that is, and see if i cant nail that big one :bowingsmilie:.... I will probably see some squirrels ...

Until the weather softens the back roads up some , other hunters are going to keep the coyotes moving in the easier to access areas. I can count on one hand the number of times I have been anywhere in area 10. So I don't know very much about it.And the LBL is big enough a man can spend a lifetime getting to know it.

But if coyotes are moving there they are moving all over the place at the same time. And in much the same way. Meaning they are all using similar travel routes and bedding area types. But other hunters change them up in thier habits. I have found the back doors to several bedding areas and have yet to figure out where those animals are going when they leave them.

If I can find them I can kill them. But that is one hell of a big haystick with a whole lot of needles to look for  Jimmie

Jimmie I totally agree with you. The place i bow hunt in area 10 is about a mile and a half on my gps from a main road.It seems to me that the further you go back in to the woods the better your odds.. Especially when you have hunters driving the roads looking for any sign they can see from the truck to hunt what they are hunting. Most of the hunters dont want to get to far from the truck to hunt neither. I have had some luck during Feb when most hunters are done over there.. Although i have never killed one over there i have had them close. I am going to change my strategy this year a little. You can count on two hands how many times i have hunted coyotes over there. Maybe you could show me some of your tactics you use over there. :eyebrow:...

I have turkey hunted in area 10 since 1987. Mainly around Henson Cemetery and roads 357, 356, and 358. LBL shuts down 356 and 357 during turkey season so foot traffic only.  Have not been there for at least 3 years though.  Can't say I remember seeing much coyote sign back then but I wasn't really looking for it (or knew what to look for) either.  There is definitely some good terrain for coyotes there. Pretty thick in some places.  Its a good deer area too.

I have too many as it is now. I was sitting under a den tree Monday morning and had squirrels all over me. Had one climb a vine 6 inches from the end of my MZ barrel and stop and look at me. Young of the year by the look of it. Might have to go back there after deer season.
Great hunter...Yes?....Yessss
Fine figure of a man?....Yes
That is all you need to know...for now!
