Here is a carving I have been working on.

Tell me what you think.

Hawks Feather

Hey Troy that looks really good.  What is the size of the wood?

Jerry

Troy Walter

Jerry it is about 6x6 on the large end and then tapers down to about 4 inches. It was a piece of wood that I could not use for calls and it looked like a mountain so I did some carving on it

Troy,

That looks real good!  It's tough carving raw wood (not to be painted), and maintaining the detail.  A trick to use on the lighter colored areas of a carving is to leave them "untextured".  Ex. the white of a coyotes muzzle on a solid walnut carving.  This makes the textured areas stand out.  Also, if the carved areas appear fragile, or prone to breakage.  Soaking these areas with super glue will add strength.  The other thing on relief carvings, is not to go too deep.  I usually look for the lowest areas of the carving and do those first, working back towards the closest surface.
You did a real nice job!  Even have the delineations of the growth rings on the horns.  Well done!

Wasn't sure if I was to look at this or not.   Seen where everyone else was peeking at it so I did too.  :laf:

Man that is SWEET!!! :thumb2:
I sure envy you guys that can carve wood like that.  I'm lucky to drive a nail in wood w/o bending it. :rolleye:
