BELLE PLAINE, Minn. —  The Sibley County Sheriff says that a man who accidentally shot and killed his 9-year-old son while they were hunting apparently mistook the boy for a turkey.

Sheriff Bruce Ponath says that Anthony Klaseus of Belle Plaine and his son Hunter were hunting turkey about three miles west of Belle Plaine around 6:30 p.m. Saturday when Klaseus shot his son in the chest with a 12 gauge shotgun.

Klaseus dialed 911 on his cell phone. Emergency responders pronounced the boy dead at the scene.

"He was absolutely panicked. That would be an understatement," Ponath said. "Very distraught."

Ponath said the shooting was an accident but that his department is continuing to investigate the circumstances.

What an asshole.  :mad2:

Well since my chain just got rattled I guess I'll say what I've been feeling since this whole thread started. I had no feelings for the person that pulled the trigger since I've read about this. Other than feelings of how in the hell do you mistake an 8yr old child for a damn 20lb turkey.   :argh: Only an idiot could do that as well as leave his 8yr old son alone in the woods during any hunting season. He will now get what is due him & in the meantime we all look like drunken jerks in the woods. I sat in on the local Hunters Education Course last fall & the fella did his level best to get everybody to understand how important target identification is.

Now I do feel for the rest of the Family. Very much so.   They will not get to see that young man grow up into someone special.

But never a sad feeling went thru my heart for this "Father".   :noway:

Alcohol, drugs and guns......an all too familiar recipe for disaster.  So very sad.

I agree Glen.......In the beginning, all I knew is he shot his son. Regardless of being an idiot or not, my son is 9 and I could not imagine having to go through life with that kind of remorse. He will not get what he deserves because it appears that the charges are not hard enough. I feel they should shoot him in the chest with a big ole shotgun and see how he likes it.

That was all I knew in the beginning as well Joe. And there was exactly no reason for this to have happened outside of total ignorance. I can see how an "accidental" shooting can occur during deer season as some slugs will hit a tree & frag into 3 or 4 pieces. But not with a shotgun loaded with shot for turkeys.

This guy just did not do anything right that day. AND he did all this knowingly & willfully. While he may feel the remorse for shooting his Son,, I'm sorry but I just can't feel for him. And I wouldn't want anybody I know feel sorry for me if I would have done this. Regardless of the new found circumstances,, I'm not sure I want to see him shot in the chest but I would like to see some of his life taken from him. If this all makes me a bad person I can handle it. I would honestly like to forgive him but I just can't. I feel for that young boy too deeply.

This one happened within 30  minutes of my house.  :rolleye:

Na, your not a bad person Glen (I might be  :doh2:). I feel the same. I feel for the kid, and agree that no one should feel sorry for him, except himself. I really don't feel he needs to be shot, but I don't feel that our justice system will do enough to this man for his poor judgement and ignorance.
