Frogman

I have been putting corn out for the deer behind my house.  This evening Friday 7/25/08 three of them were waiting for me when I took the corn down for them.  They allowed me to get very close so I decided to get the camera and take some pictures.  They let me get within about 20 yards.  Ended up with 5 deer four bucks and one doe.  My camera only has a 3x telephoto so you can see how close I was.

Pretty neat huh?

Since they are still in velvet will their horns grow any more?  Some of them have small bumps where brow tines might still grow.  There is one larger 8 point that only comes out after dark.  I have only seen him twice.

Pretty neat Frogman I see ya remembered to take the corn with Ya.......... :innocentwhistle:
None of those bucks are mature yet, give em a couple of years. That doe is probably older than all of them. One of the ones I saw there with you in turkey season looked like he was going to be a keeper though.
They will grow some more but not a lot they will start to rub in August sometime. You should see some sparring in about a month and a half. With a bachelor group hanging around you should be getting some good picks or video.

wv_yoter,
Ahhh, they're awful small.  I would try for the 8 point if I could get a shot at him down in the woods.  Wouldn't hardly be fair to shoot at one over the corn!?!?!?

Might not be "fair" whatever that means but in Kaintuckee it is legal to hunt deer over bait.   Lots of folks do it.

The problem you have is turkeys.  It is HIGHLY illegal to hunt turkeys where corn or other bait has been spread.

nice pics.

yes,the "velvet"bucks will continue to grow antlers, in most places, until late august or early september.  ive always heard that its an increase in testosterone  towards fall and the rut that ends the growth of the antlers and causes them to shed the velvet, but im not sure.
