It's either a king snake or an eastern milk snake. Looks more like the king snake. Both are good to have around the barn for rodent control.

I do believe that what's called a whip snake and/or corn (king) snake around here, a young one. Quite harmless unless you're a mouse or deathly afraid of snakes.

The pupils of it's eyes will be round, like ours... unlike the cat's eyes of poisonous vipers. Also notice the long, slender and keenly pointed tail, one more indication of being a nonpoisonous species.

Edit: One of the most dangerous things about snakes is having a hunting partner that don't care for them... in any variety.

Especially when he's walking ahead of me and a snake slithers out of the leaves at his feet... a man can get trampled.  :roflmao:

Looks like a corn snake to me.   Some people keep them as pets.  Nonpoisonous.

I'm with WW and Semp, either a corn or milk.  Milk snakes are very aggressive and put on a big show but arent poisonous.

What you very likely have there is a copperhead!............A baby one has that coloration until it sheds a couple of times
Then they look like this.........

I have a lot of chances to see the babies come right from the mother........When they are hit with a weedeater and I tell ya that is a dangerous little fella.........You can pry open his mouth and find its fangs with a stick to be sure but a young one like that has not matured enough to know how much venom to give so they give it all at once.......CAREFULL.
The color varies but the young are born alive and are very different in color until they shed a few times mind the eyes and the pattern and for God sakes do not get bit.LOL

Oh and do not believe all that crap about them having a yellow tipped tail and the patterns being different......
They look different in different parts of the world.
I used to catch them for biology teachers and I am telling ya that could be one.
FYI:
I asked my wife what kind it was and she said without hessitation "looks like a baby copperhead".

The belly scales don't look like a copperhead. They have a single row of scales past the anal vent, as do all pit vipers. This snake appears to have multiple scales. I tried to blow it up a little to check.

It is hard to say from a photo and the pattern on the scales can throw ya off.
I have some old pics somewhere of baby ones I just cant seem to find them.......I will look again

It's kinda hard to tell from the pic. It won't blow up enough to be sure. Pit vipers have the single row of belly scales towards the tail and non-poisonous snakes have a split row of belly scales after the vent. They come in so many different colors that you can't judge them by that.

This is a baby still inside the sac.........same color as Cathryn's snake and clearly from a copperhead.
I see a lot of them and as I said I could be wrong but dang sure looks like it could be one.

This is not just some random Photo either,.........I killed this snake when it tried to bite my wife. (West Virginia)
