I can't believe I'm doing this, but here goes :doh2:
I got home from work today and UPS had made a delivery!! It was the lathe!!
I unpackaged everything and got it set up on the bench.
I read the instructions, looked it over and decided it was in running order.
Remember when I said I had some left over closet rod laying around?
Well, I grabbed a piece of that and stuck it in the lathe.
I played with each of the different tools a little bit to see what they would do.
Once I got the piece totally rounded up I thought, what the heck, give it a try.
So, I just started in and attempted to make the contour of a call that I like.
Keep in mind I have never used a wood lathe before, nor held the tools.
I got it down to what I was looking for, added the wire burn accents and sanded on it a bit.
I finished it off with some Johnson's paste wax just because it was on the shelf.

This is only an outside turn, there isn't a hole drilled in it or nothing.

After taking the picture I realized I didn't have anything in the photo for size reference.
It's about 3-1/2" long.

Now for the unveiling :shck:

So what do you think?  Comments welcome.

Do you mean those burn rings?
Are those taboo?

Note to self:  NO NORE "ROOKIE RINGS"

Here is another one I just got done with.

Like I said, no hole in these, I'm just trying to get the hang of the tools and turn speed and stuff.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I can see where this could get to be an addiction :shck:

Those are both very nice starts and you appear to have an eye or style, you'll be taking off in no time at all. Just keep with it, ask lots of questions, and when you get them done, show pics o the ends.

Scrap the note about rookie rings, you'll find more that like then not when placed right and they are called "Accent rings"

Again, nice job  :congrats:

Good lookin turns  :congrats: :congrats:
I remember the excitement of gettin the lathe
outta the box and turnin anything you could get your hands on.
Good job.

Thank you everyone for the very kind comments.
I did bell out and drill the second one. I have some JC Products inserts on hand.
It was pretty fun to put in the different voices and listen to the sound.
I bought the sampler pack and I have two each of 8 different voices.
I have to say, it sounds pretty good. I'd take it to the field.
Now I just have to read my books, keep snooping on here and keep practicing.
Thanks again,
M

Nah......there was a thread awhile back that "rookie rings" or "accent rings" got tossed around in.  Some like 'em, some don't, some (like me) could care less either way.   Do it your way and have fun!

I like the shape.  You are on the right track in that you are turning and learning rather than making and trying to sell.  The make and sell will come, but enjoy the lathe while you learn.

OK, just one more then I gotta get to bed :pout:
This is another style I've seen and liked.

Now.....I gotta get to bed. Must work in the morning :pout:
Voiced with LV-002 and I really like it.
Thanks for lookin'

Wow,
You are really getting with it.  Sounds like you are really enjoying your new lathe.  Keep up the good work!!

I gotta agree. For being a beginner your doing very well. Your shapes are very clear, proportional and distinguished.
I like that in a call.
