Just went down stairs to check on our little batch of eggs in the incubator. I could here peeping when I got part way down the stairs and I don't know how ma nature does it but the little guys are busting shells now. Too cool.

That has got to be a chore to peck your way out of a shell.

There isn't much room to swing your pecker (snicker) to get a good hit on the shell.
And what about air?

Like when do they start breathing air?

I mean it's not like when we're born where you have Mom a pushin' & Doc a pullin'!

Working their way out seems to "get them going" so to speak. When I had birds there were times when one would get hung up and I would try to help it along. I can't remember any of them living too long. It appears that if they can't make it out of the shell they won't make it in the world.

Little birds have an egg tooth on the end of their beak just for this operation. They start by just making a hole in the shell and then can just lay there breathing for hours but once they start to "saw" their way out it only takes a short time [10 minutes for some]. Once the end is open a kick with the legs squirts them right out.

Here they are this morning.

Can't beat hands on experience like moving them to the brooder house.

The one that came out of here is house broke and knows how to shut the door.

This one demonstrates the first hole thingy I'm talking about.

Jerry is absolutely correct in his statement about the ones that can't make it out won't live even with help. The toughest thing to teach myself and the kids is to watch and see with no touching.
