Title: Nice flathead
Post by: HaMeR on April 06, 2012, 07:26:46 AM
T A couple guys at work finally talked me into getting my fishing license again. Haven't fished since 1999. Except 2 summers ago in Canada for a couple days. I found out early on why they wanted me to take them. The 1st couple times I went I put nice fish on their stringer for them. The last couple times they seem to have finally caught on & have filled their own stringer whilst I just sat, fished & watched them learning.  :laf:  Anywho the culmination of my teachings  :nono: & their prior knowledge led Jared to this flathead yesterday afternoon.   :yoyo: :yoyo:

35" & 20.2lbs

And now for the "Rest of the story".

Jared was bottom fishing. He had 2 hooks about 24" apart & the bottom hook was about 18" off the bottom.  The cat just grabbed the nightcrawler & moved off. It was just the one hit. He was lucky he was watching the pole at that very moment he told me. He set the hook & the fight was on. After a good long 10 minutes the cat was next to us. I had my hand just a few inches above the water trying to grab him by the mouth when it made a final run. I seen how it was hooked & was afraid he would be lost to the deepest depths of the lake. I just told Jared to keep the line tight but don't fight it. Just let him wear completely out or he would be lost. He wasn't hooked good at all. Jared has fished for many years so he knew what to do. We had no net so Jared worked him back into the shallows after ANOTHER final run for freedom. I was out of position due to his maneuvering so I just grabbed the pole as he grabbed the cat. When we got it on shore I showed him the hook problem. His line was broke between the hooks. The hook in it's mouth was not the one that landed it. In the bottom picture you can see a blood spot back by it's tail. That is the hook that sent this nice cat to the fillet knife!!

Glen,

That is a nice catch.  When I started reading I was becoming fearful that I was going to read that the second hook ended up in your hand or something like that.  Glad it didn't.

Nice story, Glen.   Kinda makes me want to dust off the 'ol fishin' pole (if I can even find it) and get after 'em again.   Been many years since I cat fished.   I'm gonna need a refresher course.  Are you taking new students in your cat fishing school?    :eyebrownod:

Yeah I patterned my catfishing services after Johnny's LBL Guide Service for Coyotes. Which means they better learn quick before the next one makes ME learn all over again!!  :alscalls: :alscalls:

I sure am glad that you wrote out the meaning.  I was thinking of something much worse.

Maybe your work's system has a block on such items. Merely a guess on my part slag. Sorry I can't help.

I assume they did Ben. They definitely like to fry up as much as they can.
