Title: Spring Turkey Question
Post by: yotefever on April 08, 2007, 06:37:12 PM
I will be out hunting this week for the WI spring turkey season, starting this Wednesday. The first of 5, 5 day periods. I have to work and won't make it out until Friday, leaving after work on Thursday to head 'up north'.
Right now they are calling for snow up to 6 inches around here on Wednesday but getting warmer  Friday and Saturday calling for rain both days.
We've had very cold weather for over a week and I was wondering what to expect from the birds?
So far I haven't gotten a bird in spring just two in the fall. I sure prefer calling it reminds me more of coyote hunting  :highclap:
Thanks for any help.

Mike

Brent could probably answer that for ya.  :eyebrownod: If it was me, I'd throw the auger back in the truck and go get some bluegills

Mike,

Depending on how far along your birds are they should still be workable. It got real warm here fast then the temps dropped off and it snowed as well. The snow and cold did not hurt the birds but the 25 -30 mph winds did! Wind makes it worse than anything and the fact that it just sucks hunting turkeys in the cold and snow! Once they get cranked up they pretty much stay on track no matter the weather. But it does influence how they feed and were they go, just like any other game animal. And weather changes goes sometimes give the birds lock jaw. This is were knowing your area and the birds pays off.

We have hunted here in the snow and killed birds, and we hunted NY for several years as well. We hunted in snow about every time we were there and killed birds. It sure is a pretty site to see a bird come full strut in a snow cover though. A few years ago we hunted on opening day in Ky were it was snowing and sleet. We killed one bird and worked another to the gun, and the guy missed! They were both two year old birds.

They do seem to gobble far in the snow, better than the rain for sure. You may need to change up a little to get on them if they don't gobble but you should be fine.

Thanks for the help Brent, if I get one right away  :roflmao: maybe I'll get out your howler and go for some coyotes, way to many in the area.

Take care,
Mike
