Good Job Glen, looks like you gotum zeroed in, we have a shoot every now  and then but never can keep them coming in long enough to rack up a good score. cc

JohnP

Glen, looks like 20ga casings on the blind floor, you killing them things with a 20?  How close you letting them get to ya?
When they come for mine they better bring theirs

Hawks Feather

John,

Usually Glen doesn't use a shotgun at all.  He just calls them in, puts salt on their tail, and they stay right there.  Yes, he really is THAT good!    :bowingsmilie:

Jerry

I thought maybe his better half was doing the shooting.

I never thought of that.  Since she IS the shooter of the family that may be the reason Glen has to use the salt shaker for his birds.

That would be winter wheat & mud Jerry!! And not that long ago we were concerned about the ice dams & flooding. Thankfully it was avoided in all but the extremely low places & nobody was negatively affected. And it warms up a lot quicker down South here.  :innocentwhistle:

Thanks Carl. The decoys did most of the work today. I didn't have to call much. And it's easier when you know they are in the area.

Mr. John-- The hunts at the top were last fall. And you are correct on the 20ga. My best range is between 15 & 25yds. Most of the hits,, 12 or 20ga are between 10 & 35yds. I did have a very lucky shot on one today that had to be pushing 40+ tho. It was waaaaay out there.

And when is the last time anybody here has tried to salt a crows tail??!!  :noway: THAT'S what I thought!!  :alscalls: :alscalls:

Diane doesn't shoot the shotguns. Just never wanted to. But someday I want to call a turkey in for her.  :eyebrow: :eyebrow:

Yesterday AM wasn't a total bust. I got out for a couple hours on the last day of Crow season anyhow.  I went to the other field where I had seen around 50 or so birds on Thursday. These birds were flying a lot higher than the day before which made for a lot of watching & not as much shooting. I did get some within range but they circled behind me over the thicker tree tops rather than out front. I did take quite a few "Oh what the he77" shots tho!! I managed to dump 2 good crows.

Here's the 2nd one.

And here's the 1st.

Love those river landings!!

Aint that the truth!! Luckily the last 2 days I was out it had slowed a bit from the runoff.

Yes I do call. I have 3 hand calls that I really like & an FX3. I like to start with hand calls & see what I can do. Then after abot 2hrs fire up the e-caller. These last 2 hunts was 99% e-caller tho. They just weren't interested in lone calling & would only respond to the Crow Fight sound.  It's hard to sound like a murder of rowdy crows with a hand call.

The previous hunt was really nice. The decoys did the work for me in about 1/2 of the crows that showed up. Sometimes there's no need to call.

This fall I'll be back after them again. I'll start with the ol 870 that I sanded down & re-stained this Winter.  :eyebrow:

Maybe a little bait would work.  It helped John with his 'bird' problem.

Dang it Jim...I was gonna ask that question. Guess I'll ask in a different way...so Glen, are you using that crow call you made yourself?

Nicely done sir...

Steve

Jim-- I have had crows land with the decoys on one or 2 occasions. Upon post landing mortem inspection :eyebrow: I deemed them to be very young crows. And I've never had any land unless there were real crows already strewn about the field.  My Brother & I have both had Red Tails attack our crow decoys. Now THAT is funny!!!!!!!!  :alscalls: :alscalls:  Oohhh the thunk & look of WHAT THE HE77 JUST HAPPENED!!!! in their beady little eyes is priceless!! Looks kinda like this >>  :shock2: <<   :alscalls: :alscalls:

Jerry-- On the 17 bird shoot friday I found a deer skeleton & put a couple pieces of the spine under 2 decoys beaks. And a couple small leg bones with another. That may have helped.

Steve-- I have used that call. I used it around this time last year if I remember correctly. It worked purdy good. I just like the 3 I have on my lanyard a little more. There's a Jack Mincey call,, Knight & Hale,, & the venerable Hawks Feather call on it.

Sometimes no matter what call you have you still need a lot of noise all at once. That's where the e-caller comes in handy.

Yeah, just go wipe yer poop chute first.

Jim,

Hum.  Using that call might be the reason that you haven't shot any crows.   :sleep2:

Jerry
