HAVERHILL â€" Conservation officers said a 79-year-old Lebanon man â€" reported missing by family members after he failed to return from a hunting trip â€" was found alive late Wednesday after being submerged up to his neck in a swamp for more than 33 hours.

Lebanon police contacted Fish and Game officers to report that Alexander Samor, 79, of Lebanon left his home around 4 a.m. on Tuesday to hunt ducks on opening day of waterfowl season. He did not return home as planned that evening, and family reported him missing Wednesday morning.

"No one knew exactly where the missing man would be hunting, but family felt that he would hunt somewhere along the Connecticut River," Fish and Game Conservation Officer James Kneeland said in a news release.

A conservation officer recalled seeing the man's vehicle at Bedell Bridge boat launch in Haverhill, and a search of the area was launched with two Vermont game wardens and three New Hampshire conservation officers. While two officers searched the Connecticut River by boat, three officers searched a large wooded swamp adjacent to the boat launch.

According to Kneeland, shortly after 4 p.m. Samor was located stuck in the mud and submerged up to his neck in the wooded swamp about a half-mile from the boat launch. Two officers were able to pull him from the mud. He was suffering from hypothermia and fatigue after being stuck for 33 hours and exposed to heavy overnight rain.

According to Kneeland, Samor said he entered the swamp in chest waders to retrieve a duck he had shot around 7 a.m. on Tuesday.

"He became hopelessly stuck and the more he struggled the more he sank into the mud," said Kneeland.

Samor was transported to Cottage Hospital for evaluation.

One of the things that is always taught in Hunter Education is to always let someone know where you are hunting.  Too bad he didn't take the class.

It rained nonstop that day. That is part of my stomping grounds I've hunted and fished there a million times.  Sounds like he's lucky to not have drowned or died of hypothermia.
