I'm game, how will it work?

Post by: FinsnFur on May 16, 2007, 09:20:41 PM
I'm not sure...looking for some input.
Run it for a week?....longer?

Go by weight, but how do we verify it?

Go by quantity in photos?

Go by accumulated inches?

Sounds good to me.

Post by: Bob D on May 16, 2007, 09:45:46 PM
Yeah, I guess you're right.
OK, lets run it a week, 2 ways to win
1.number of lbs + inches= entry on individual fish ( verify inches with tape with picture)
2. total number of fish caught ( verify with picture)
How bout that?
Title: Re: Who's up for a virtual fishing contest??
Post by: FinsnFur on May 16, 2007, 10:35:54 PM
Sounds good to me.
So say ya got a 5 lb bass, and it's 26 inches long. Total points for that fish is 31?

We'll see if anyone else pipes up.

Me & Cam are in. But we throw them back so our pics will only be of each fish. But I may have an old bilage pump that I can rig up to a plastic barrel to keep them out for a "group pic " before we throw 'em back....

Any type of fish count? We fish for bass, cats. and blue gills. Cam also has a kids fishing day this Saturday for trout.
If you want I'll get Cam to spin a call for a 1st place prize. And if Cam wins I'll just buy the call from him and he'll be happy?? What do ya think?

Sounds like I better hit the trout stream.......I think I feel another 50 trout day, or maybe a night of cat fishing?

Jim do you think we need to have categories for different fish?
With the different shapes of fish, a trophy for one species might not even come close to an average weight for another.

Most everyone has bass around to fish for, but not everyone has trout, walleye, stripers, etc.

Say you were to catch 15 bluegills that were 1 1/2 lbs. each. That's one heck of of trophy basket of gills. Then I come in with a 12 ib striper that is 24" long, which is an everyday average striper around here. My average fish would beat your trophy basket. 36 points vs. 15 points according to the rules that Bob stated. Even if you were to add the total number of fish plus the weight of each of them the trophy basket still loses at 22.5 points. I don't see how that would be fair. It takes more skill and LUCK to catch the big gills over the average striper.

Will this be for fish caught only after the contest starts or any fish you have caught? Just curious since it wasn't mentioned.

I not trying to screw ya up Jim. Just want to make it fair for everyone.

Brian.

Post by: FinsnFur on May 17, 2007, 10:43:24 AM
No that's a good point I never considered.
I was hoping to make one grand winner and give something away like we did at the beginning of the board, shooting sticks, spotlights, fishing reel...but I dont know that I can fit 5 decent prizes into my budget.  So maybe we need to hack up a different scale for adding points.

As far as what and when...no it would just be fish caught once the contest started. To help legitimatize it we'd have you include something in the pic that said Fins and Fur on it...like we've done for the other contests.
Title: Re: Who's up for a virtual fishing contest??
Post by: CypressSlough on May 17, 2007, 10:57:04 AM
Jim, I'm gonna sound stupid here, but you'll have to explain the FnF in the pic. I haven't been in any of the other contests. I'm assuming it is something that you would have to place in the scene before the pic is taken. Reason I am asking, I rarely keep any fish. 99% of the fish I catch go right back into the lake after a quick pic.
Title: Re: Who's up for a virtual fishing contest??
Post by: FinsnFur on May 17, 2007, 11:00:41 AM
We made it easy for those kinda pics Brian.
You had to have something in the pic that said Fins and Fur on it.
Whether it be wrote on a piece of paper, a decal on your truck, scratched in the mud, wrote on your arm.
Anything....but it had to be legible and UN-photoshopped in.

Well put all that back up once were ready to roll
Title: Re: Who's up for a virtual fishing contest??
Post by: CypressSlough on May 17, 2007, 11:09:17 AM
Gotcha Jim. That's easy enough.  Maybe I need to get one of the FnF decals to go right above the WFO decal on the Mercury. Although I may have to blur the other one out so it doesn't offend anyone.  :innocentwhistle: :roflmao:

How about doing the point system like 1 point per fish, 2 points if they are over a certain length or weight??? That way if the guys are catching nothing but bass or stripers, the others that are catching bluebies would only have to catch more of them to stay close in the running. And you could break down the prizes by most points, biggest weight (1 fish) and longest fish. That way theres only 3 prizes. It may knock a few out for the weight fish but they still have a chance at the points prize....Does that make sense?
Title: Re: Who's up for a virtual fishing contest??
Post by: FinsnFur on May 17, 2007, 10:55:49 PM
That sounds like it would work.
But I'm still leaning towards a grand prize....because were shaking each other down in the backroom and all pitching in to foot the prize.

Im going to TRY and hit the Musky pretty hard here soon,,my buddy caught 3 on Mothers Day so i told him i am ABOUT ready to go out but i dont know if it will be for another 2 weeks or so but i am in and we ALMOST always have the camera with us,,,i can see putting whatever you decide on in the pic like the ace of spades that "another" place did last year,,and im with ya on the ,taking a pic with the measuring tape on the fish too,,but how can ya verify weight? some of those CHEAP fish scales are NOT that great, plus it would be hard to get close enough to the scale for a pic AND keep the fish entirely in the pic too? but it sounds good to me since i JUST STARTED fishing again at the end of last year,,hell before the end of last year i havent fished in about 16-17 years

Bob

Now this guy has a FISH

Thats definitely a keeper. If it decides to thrash there's gonna be some chaos in that boat.  :laf:

Any other input on a fishing contest?

Jim, how about setting up different categories. Say like a Single Fish category, Bag Limit category, etc. Leaving the biggest winners of each with bragging rights.  Use the point system like mentioned earlier. For single fish, add the length and weight to determine the winner in that category. For the bag limit, add the weight and number of fish to determine the winner for that one.  Then set up a pole for an overall grand prize winner. This way you only have to come up with 1 prize. This may be making it too involved. Just thought I would throw it out there.

I like the idea of diffrent catagories. Some people can only fish for panfish and really dont get a chance to go for bass and such.

I like what cypressslough has come up with.

Title: Re: Who's up for a virtual fishing contest??
Post by: FinsnFur on May 20, 2007, 03:07:23 PM
I do too.
I can live with two categorys. I think we should shag the weight though...we'll never be able to read a scale in the pics and it requires the contestants to drag more cargo with them if they catch and release fishing.

I'm heading out here for a several hour road trip to run my girls back to their mothers and then I'll see if we can get something going on this.

Title: Re: Who's up for a virtual fishing contest??
Post by: FinsnFur on May 20, 2007, 09:21:29 PM
Ok.....the more I think about this...the more I think it's going to lessen the amount of participants, the more involved, or critical we get.

So I came up with a ton of rules based on everyones replies combined, and I'm thinking if all applied correctly..there is no way anyone will be able to win this thing but me. Sound good?  :yoyo:

  Ok... :iroll: scratch that then.

How about three categories and one winner?

Pan fish worth 5 points ea. Minimum of 6" long, anything over 9" is 10 points.
All breeds of bass, and catfish. 10 points ea. Minimum of 12" long, anything over 20" is 20 points.
Pike and Musky. 20 points each. Minimum of 36" long, anything over 48" is 30 points.

Too complicated??

Or do enough of you insist on a winner for each category?
It's not like were going to be giving away supplemental health insurance or anything.

So are ya excluding my trout because you is scared?????
Title: Re: Who's up for a virtual fishing contest??
Post by: awh on May 21, 2007, 07:21:09 AM
If your going that route I think you should do a size=points thing. Pan, trout, bass any thing 6" = 1 point and so on.  Or add the trout and other speices that will be caught into the system you have going.

If you had started this before the weekend LIl-man was there. He cought 6 nice trout Saturday morning, 4-5 nice cats Friday night and Yesterday the bass and blue-bes couldn't find enough cover to hide from the turd. Next time he's on line ask him about the cat that broke his line after 15 minutes of fighting it...LOL I do every 5 minutes and if he could get away with cussing me he would have already told me a thing or two....LOL
Title: Re: Who's up for a virtual fishing contest??
Post by: FinsnFur on May 21, 2007, 08:04:41 AM
No I didnt mean to exclude trout. I just forgot about them. But I did try to break it into possible size catagories so that a musky fisherman wouldn't automatically whip a pan fisherman.

Trout are sought after from 6" to 56" inches...so where should we them?

Title: Re: Who's up for a virtual fishing contest??

Here the legal size limit for trout is 6" long.
Title: Re: Who's up for a virtual fishing contest??
Post by: FinsnFur on May 21, 2007, 03:10:44 PM
Yeah but they are readily caught from 6' to 56". What are you thinking for category?

We were hoping to give away a nice high end reel or something similar. If we keep adding categorys and a winner for each...were going to be giving away night crawlers.

I'm beginning to wonder if I stuck my foot in my mouth and this is all a bad idea.   :doh2:
Title: Re: Who's up for a virtual fishing contest??
Post by: awh on May 21, 2007, 03:52:12 PM
Nah....Tis a great idea.
I see your point Jim.  What about a length catagory? That way a 6" FISH gets you this many points and a 56" fish gets you this many points? No matter what the species is.
The pan fish are smaller, but when you catch them you usally cath a boat load of them and they would start adding up just as a few larger fish....make sense?
Title: Re: Who's up for a virtual fishing contest??

This has gotten too complicated. Why not just have a bass fishing contest period ?
Title: Re: Who's up for a virtual fishing contest??

Mainly because I'd win Bob, and then your just going to be upset with me.  :innocentwhistle:  :roflmao:

Danny.....ok....how about just plain ole overall inches. The most total inches caught wins?

ya'll keep talking and working out the details....come up with a great prize..... and when I head up to my dad's in about a week to pull 40+ inch strippers out of the hudson we'll start counting...... deal  :eyebrow:

ps.... high end reel works..... night crawlers don't........ strippers are 'bass', so if ya want to make it a base contest....i'm in  :shck: :roflmao:

Over all inches works for me. But come on Jimbo. You can be in this too. I don't want to be the only one here that an 8 year old beats in a tournament...
I'll send a gift certificate to bass pro for the FNF staff memeber that has the highest score. That way they can play too. What do ya think? (Let's see, Brent is busy turning calls and Rich is....(What does Rich do?) So I'll send you a GC....LOL)

OK. I ran into a snag here. My camera has the date & time feature....but I'm yet to figure out how to get it stamped on the pic when downloading them. If I can't figure it out will there be another way I can prove the date w/o buying another camera. Would the problem be in the program I use?  I need a beer. :madd:

Fixed. I had to set the program up to tell it to stamp it when downloading to the computer.

What happens if I have one of those 90 fish days and my tape measure ain't long enough ? AN dhow would you get the perspective right on a photo that would include all of them laid end to end down the length of the tape measure ? If they all average eight inches that would take two 35 foot tapes. Either that or a pot load of pics

Oh! And word has it the cats are on the beds too.  :yahoo:  Jimmie
Title: Re: Who's up for a virtual fishing contest??
Post by: awh on May 23, 2007, 01:29:56 PM
Hmmm, if you have one of those days with the cats, you would have to send several inches of fillets to the FNF members to see how they fare on the grill. After inspecting and picking of the teeth, you can measure the remains and send in the pics.  :innocentwhistle:

(Did he buy it Jim? Think we'll get any fillets? :fingerx:)

:roflmao: I dont know....lets hope Danny.

Jimmie I'm not really expecting anyone to line their fish up end for end and measure it. I certainly think it will work that way, but I dont think it's going to be worth the trouble.

I was thinking more like this;

Eitherway...there is no way to be exact especially since were doing this over the web.
I'll look at the pics and judge the footage based on the photos and post the results running as the tourney runs. Kinda like a chart at the weigh in station.

If anyone contests the totals I have posted, I confiscate all fish

:laf: No...if there's issues we discuss them and come to a happy medium.

If I do it , I would have posted them that way laid out on a large board. Tape at the bottom.

If yah'll want any fillets you will have to take them after my flavor inspection.  :sneer:

I do need to make a trip to the dam or the rock pile one for some meat. Blue gills at the dam and cats at the rock pile. Lose to much gear chasing the cats at the dam. Jimmie

I just figured with all the feedback that adding more of a challenge to it by points ranked by size gave more to strive for.
