Looks like someone is making a bunch of money off that new lathe. :highclap: I just wish I could afford to buy a few dozen 1x4's, 2x4's, and 2x6's to finish a couple rabbit hutches and a chicken tractor.
I been saving lumber for 3 years Bop....... all the lumber in the pics was FREE....... the 2X4X16' s ? was given to me when the plant closed....... :laf: :laf: The 2x6X16's were from a wrecked truck on the interstate.........they were going to the dump! I told them I would clean them up for FREE...... :eyebrow:
and I got 3 more truck loads in the building...... :whew: I been buying nails at the habitat store, when I find them and I think I got most of what I need right now but I may have to buy siding/ Insulation.......
If times get any tougher around here this could wind up as my new home........ :rolleye:
Cool Al! :highclap: A cabin to hang out in, have a campfire, and roast some grub once in a while is a hoot. Memories are made at places like that.
Purdy cool Al.
You gotta love them guys who drive big rigs full of lumber who aren't good at their jobs, eh Al... We got a few thousand board feet out of the ditch a couple years back the same way :yoyo:. I happened to be first on the scene [I was right behind him, 2 miles south of my farm] and because I helped him with everything I could he had me do the clean up.
Yup I been scavenging for this stuff like this for a while and you would be surprised at how many folks just throw this stuff out....
You boys are into scavenging goodies , you need to check out your local small engine stores and shops. They ship those lawn tractors in on pretty good pallets that will wind up in hte dump for the most part. A sawzall and some time will yeild a lot of lumber for siding and other small project such as rabbit hutches  Jimmie
They didnt drop any beer or Little Debbie's did they?
Heck we could get Bop on the cabin construction crew. :yoyo:
BITE ME Jimbo!! BUUUT, if you are going to have a few little debbies, I'll be there.

Got some wood given to me too. :yoyo: Not as good as what AL got, but it will work making bunny tractors.
I am quite efficient at tearing those apart and removing nails and staples...... :eyebrownod:
I am finally getting better at tearing them apart. I found a 5/4X3 stick of curly maple in one hte other day after I posted to this thread. I am thinking it should become scratch boxes.
I am also finding some high grade cherry in them as well . Just not thick enough to be of real use for much, 3/8 to 1/2 inch thick.
Good find Bop. That will keep you busy for some time. Get those buddies together and get to it. I am sure they could use some of that as well. On hte four by four pallets you will find the sawzall the better tool to just cut the nails. Saves a lot of boards that way. Jimmie
Good idea Jimmie. Lord knows I like tearing stuff up with a sawsall. ;yes; ;yes;
QuoteI am also finding some high grade cherry in them as well .
I've learned to watch things made from "scrap lumber" such as pallets, crates, and engineering stakes. Most of our stakes are white oak, but once in a while we get runs that are a mix of cherry and maple. The maple gets sorted through before getting pounded in the ground. This past Christmas, I made a pen and pencil set for my oldest son to use at college. I used a slimline kit with black enamel and tiger maple from a stake. Used a wax finish to keep the natural color and buffed to a high gloss. Turned out real sweet. Wish I had taken pictures.

Its in its final resting place......... But if ya aint carefull how you put it on the ground IE blocks or foundation........ The tax man raises your personal property taxes through the roof here in WV. :madd:
The reason the windows are later is we dont know when we will get the time to put them in yet and it really only takes about an hour a window taking your time.......and in the woods........ ya gotta have a Gen. or battery operated tools.
The reason for no floor yet "speed reader" is we wont be back for a week or so now and we dont want water sitting there on the OSB for a week.......... :laf: :laf:

I already have the toilet.
With running water and all  :yoyo:
..
In WV we have personal property taxes every year, and if it has a permanent foundation the taxes are Way higher than if its unattached and can be moved....
Thats why we have all the cars up on blocks...... :laf: :laf:
Also they only do drive buy's so if you lay the blocks on thier sides....... they can see......no permanent foundation.....
That OSB has gone up to almost $13 a sheet!!!!!! I aint drilling nothing...... :nono:
Are you gonna wire it so all you have to do is plug a generator into it for a portable heater & a light or two??

I told him he is the reason WV gets a bad wrap and that he should leave! ........ Quickly......and he did.
Where I'm at on the farm they tax my house. My outbuildings are all part of the farm and therefor exempt. If I had an off farm business ie; construction with a cat. Then they could tax my shop on the percentage agreed upon that it was used for that business. [L] I don't even get building permits :nofgr:.

Glen we are using the transfer switch from the old camper so we can run on solar,12v DC, generator, or electric (AC).
we are also gonna try and use the heater and thermostat as well as the propane stove from the camper.....
it will have 4 bunk style beds and a bathroom but until I get the $$ for some pipe we will carry our water.
It'd be nice to find a deal on a refrigerator from a camper since you're going to have propane.
They should do our taxes like they do Barry's. They finally did make farm equipment exempt. For a while I was paying taxes on our tractor, baler, rake, mower, tedder, trailer, bush hog, stock trailer, four wheeler, and left over hay (yeah no kidding, taxes on the number of bales of hay you had on July 1). The heck of it is, each county can be a little different.

Please don't tell me they actually have someone come and count the bales Mike :sad3:. If you guys got that happening then your government is even further out of control than I thought :shock2:. Do they tax you on old machinery as well?

QuotePlease don't tell me they actually have someone come and count the bales Mike . If you guys got that happening then your government is even further out of control than I thought . Do they tax you on old machinery as well?
No, they would send you a card if you had your property listed as being a farm, and you would assess yourself. They quit that and now we don't pay any property tax on equipment or hay. Where they are going to get me is, I have been building a corral and am going to start on high tensile fence, both are improvements to the property. When they come by, they will add this to my taxes.
Hey Al, if there is anything you need, let me know and I will keep my eyes peeled. I am all over Tyler, Pleasants, and Wetzel counties. Surely I could find some stuff somewhere.
He isn't kidding Barry, that happens to be why we love pole barns so much. They are not considered to be permanant building without a concrete foundation and are taxed diferently. In some states, temporary buildings are excempt from taxes. We do love taking care of our government obligations so. :nono:
Al I hope ya dug down a ways and put some big flat sandstone under those blocks. Otherwise they might sink a tad when company shows up in a wet season. Or after a long hard winter . Jimmie
