Title: I've got a shot at becoming President.
Post by: pitw on April 26, 2010, 07:21:03 AM
Thanks to this board and CC I am going to become a peanut farmer .  I already have the out of US birth certificate and I figure if I can grow peanuts too, I'll be a shoe in for a presidential candidate :alscalls: :alscalls:.
Kinda funny that I never heard of boiling peanuts before last week :pout:, but Carl told me about them and is willing to send up some seed for me to see if I can actually get one to grow up here[could be a test as he says not to plant until the ground is 65F :shock2:] in our much cooler clime but I'm hoping our longer daylight hours make up for some of the other drawbacks like cool, dry, windy and soil conditions :wo:.
Who else has cooked peanuts this way?

Never done the peanut thing, but ate a LOT of them.

As for being President, just wait a few months and you won't need your "out of US birth certificate".  obama is trying to get his immigration bill on the fast track and with that anyone that is in the US (or probably even can spell US) will become a citizen.  The best part is you can still have your family in Canada and since you don't have a job in the US will be able to get free everything.   As I was entering this a thought came to my mind that you might not get all of that.  After all, you are white.

Barry, The seed is on the way, put them in the mail this morning, the last Peanut Farmer we had for President did a lousy job but I do believe you can do better, so I'm counting on you. If these peanuts work out and you get all those Canadians hooked on Boiled Peanuts we will plant a big patch next year and Market them in Canada as Canuck Goobers.  :innocentwhistle: cc

If you plant after teh soil warms to sixty degrees they should do fine. They require a bit more p and K than N for fertilazer in my opinion. At least that has been my experience so far. With longer day length they may do quite well up there since many other veggies reach record weights in all the sunshine they have further north of you. It may very well be enough to outweigh the temps we grow them in.

They are a legume as well. They also require hilling like potatoes. That sandy soil you have might be a lot better than the clay we grow them in . Jimmie

It will be interesting to see if you can grow a crop.

When I was a kid I grew a bumper crop of peanuts in eastern Washington State one summer.  We had cold winters in desert dry conditions, but hot summers and we irrigated.  The tops look like alfalfa and each plant grew a great big bunch of peanuts underground.  Being on a farm, our idea of a garden was an acre or two and I put maybe a third to half an acre into two kinds of peanuts:  some kind of big ones and several rows of a smaller Spanish peanut that tasted a little better.  We roasted a bunch of them and fed most to our cows.

It was really sandy soil, actually volcanic ash though I didn't know that at the time.   I'd always wondered what volcanic ash was and then after Mt. St. Helens erupted, I realized it was our normal soil.

I have no idea what boiling a peanut will do to it :doh2:.  That's where this all started at, Carl telling me he liked boiled peanuts fresh from the ground .  Being a gullible goat I figured I could try it cause they at least sound kinda/sorta mild compared to everything else that comes from down south that has a tendency to burn your tonsils off :pout:.  Takes a poor teacher to tell others to try something and not do it himself :eyebrow:..

There are so many things you can do with Peanuts, the foliage makes great Hay, the Farmers can bale the vines  after harvest of the nuts and sell it to cattle farms for a higher price than any other hay grown around here, very nutritious  and the cows love it, after picking the peanuts off the vines I carry  the vines to a friend who has cows and they run across the pasture to get to the vines, all wildlife love them even Coyotes and we love for the Farmers to plant them on the Wanderosia, I plant just about a 1/10 of an acre each year just for Boiling them for my family and friends, for those of you that are not familiar with Boiled peanuts they are best when fresh for boiling, pull them off the vine, wash, put in pot with water and salt and Boil for about 20 minutes and soak in the brine until they take up the salt to your taste.  I do not like Peanuts that have dried and then boiled, I only eat them when in season something to look forward to every year.  :eyebrownod:  Nothing better than sitting on a Deer stand and eating Boiled Peanuts.  :yoyo: They do better in loamy sandy soil and makes them easy to harvest but will grow in just about any kind of soil if PH is right above 6.5.   CC

I didn't think you could confuse me much more but you done did it Carl .    You saying these peanuts don't get soft so you can mash them like a spud .  I was kinda/sorta thinking along the lines of porridge[you know the stuff bears and blondes eat] :innocentwhistle:.   I can foresee a problem with the 60F+ ground temperature as our air temperature won't hit that for a couple weeks.

Pitw, You boil  Peanuts while still in the hull, and so you don't get confused shell them after cooking "don't eat the Hull" would not hurt you if you did but just eat the nut inside the hull. When my peanuts come in if I am lucky enough to make some good one's I will make a movie of my BIL eating them he looks like a combine spitting out hulls.  :laf:  I will try to keep you posted as I progress with my crop. The temp of above 60 degrees is idea but above 50 will work just may slow them down a little just like with your spraying on frosty morning most plants don't grow well in cold weather, peanuts like warm weather and a frost will wipe them out. I do not plant until after the first week in May so it is a couple of weeks before I plant. Carl

Hey this is too cool eh .   Do peanuts "fix" nitrogen like an alfala plant ?  Does the boiling soften up the nut or is it still a hard unit after boiling.   Wilma is even thinking of the feed use of the plants now :eyebrow:.  How do you seed a 1/10th acre cause if my math is right using 2 foot row spacings and 6 inch's between seeds in a row, that comes out to 4,224 seeds[or a [L] of a lot of bends]  :whew:.

You guys HaMer  :nono: Jimbo What boiling does to the peanut (It cooks it)  and the salt gives them a great taste, goes good with cold 6 pack :yoyo: :eyebrownod: Pitw when you pull the peanut from the ground the nut is still green as like peas would be when you pick them and when you cook them you could mash them like potatoes after you shell them but that's not the way to eat them, simply eat them as you shell them and I like mine to be a little crunchy not mushy. The plants  are similar to Alfalfa as both are legume, I experiment a little every year with different things on fertilizer and row spacing and Rows need to be 36 inches, so the plant can spread out and get more sunshine also as the plant spreads out it allows the runners to lay down on the ground and put out more pegs (More Peanuts)  I used 24 inch rows last year and they did OK but I like 36 inch Better. To plant about 1/10 acre I use about 10 pounds of seed last year but only bought 8 pounds this year so far as I will be using the 36 inch row and I plant by hand as the seed I use are fairly big and I don't have a plate for my planter to plant them. I only sent enough seed to plant maybe one row for you to try this year but if you want more I can send. Since Peanut is about the only thing I plant anymore I stagger the planting out over about 15 to 20 days so they all don't mature at the same time. The pictures of your garden area looks great and that soil should grow some nice peanuts, your area is about the size I plant. I still think that Turkey sat down on a firecracker. cc

Kudos to Wilma, it looks like she is an expert gardener and Thanks for posting pictures of your progress and all of your high tech equipment, very similar to mine. The Kelp is seaweed that is taken from the cold waters of the Arctic and they use a special process to freeze dry and then package it. A natural fertilizer that activates the bacterial in the soil and promotes good plant growth and help to prevent disease in the plant., you can also spray it on the foliage . I will post more info about it later, right now I am going out to Plant Peanuts. Barry tell Wilma I am very impressed with her Garden, it looks great and can't wait to see more as it progresses. CC

Here is a little info on Kelp, it does not stink as Al said, I started using this stuff last year and was impressed with the results, this year I soaked my Peanut seed in the mixture overnight before planting and on the 10 day they were coming out of the ground and the plants have a dark green texture, I'm not a salesman for this material just passing along my experience with it. I am hoping it will push the plant growth for Barry on his experiment and help for his peanuts to mature before he has a frost.  :eyebrownod:  cc

The Best Seaweed for ALL Your Plants!
Contains cytokinins and 17 amino acids to encourage stronger, lusher growth, more sugars production in fruiting crops, and increased blooms!
We've all been hearing great things about the uses of seaweed as a plant growth stimulant, and we've tested lots of products to find out how they really measure up. Well, far and away the best -- hands down, barring none -- is Sea Magic, a seaweed concentrate suitable for use on all your garden plants!

This dry seaweed is just amazing. It doesn't just encourage plants to grow -- it shoots them up, increasing root production and strength so that they not only gain in size and bloom, but develop a healthy root system to maintain that increased growth all season long! They grow greener, lusher, and more resistant to pests and diseases. In combination with an all-purpose fertilizer, Sea Magic is unparalleled!

Entirely organic, this seaweed concentrate works wonders on flowering ornamentals, foliage plants, houseplants, shrubs -- you name it, Sea Magic will help it! It is a seaweed called Ascophyllum nodosum, harvested from the cold, clean water of the northern Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Canada. Unlike fish emulsion, it doesn't stink (let's be frank about that!), and it's great at preventing leaf decay and stimulating foliage production when sprayed directly onto the leaves. It hastens the absorption of nitrates, potassium, and calcium -- minerals plants need to flourish, and it actually makes them more drought resistant. Very effective against Botrytis in strawberries and damping off in Tomatoes, it also superb on lawns and ornamental grasses.

Here are some specific results observed by Dr. T.L. Senn, a Clemson University seaweed expert:

Fruits and vegetables literally taste better, due to increased levels of BRIX (fruit sugar content)

Roses produced 23 percent more blooms, Carnations 13 percent more

Vegetable and fruit crops are more prolific: 77 percent more apples, 47 percent more peppers, 24 percent more tomatoes

Insect damage is minimized -- 89 percent reduction in red mites, 77 percent reduction in leaf hoppers

Each 30-gram pouch produces 250 quarts of solution. It is a growth enhancer containing 17 key amino acids and cytokinins, which absorb into plant cells and increase their productivity and strength. Use it in conjunction with a fertilizer for best results. You just won't believe the power of this terrific seaweed!

Barry,The peanut will sometimes after sprouting will push the nut up out of the ground , nothing to worry about except the Crows will sometimes come along and start eating them, I was lucky this year loss very few to Crows, the cool weather will slow them down but soon as it heats up they will start popping out of the ground. I was down in Georgia this weekend and they were still planting peanuts, soon as they get big enough to see them good I will take pictures of a big field to show you where all the peanut butter comes from. Where you live you may not have ever seen Cotton growing either so will send some pictures of cotton fields, but the pickers now days are usually reed or green. cc

Title: Re: I've got a shot at becoming President.
Post by: Carolina Coyote on June 19, 2010, 03:44:09 PM
Barry, I put about 20 lbs on a hundred foot row, put it right on top of the plants, peanuts will make in the top 2 or 3 inches of the soil so when it rains or watered the gypsum will get to where its needed. That ground looks pretty hard the way its cracking so if you put more gypsum it will help soften the ground and make the peanut easier to harvest. The gypsum will not burn the plant. The hard crust on the ground is making it difficult  for the peanuts  to come up but they are pretty hardie and should make if the temperature stays warm enough, If you haven't put any fertilizer you might side dress with a little 10-10-10 ( 10- 15 lbs)or water in some Miracle Grow. Grab a hoe and help that boy. cc

Morning Barry, Glad to see your family enthusiasm for the Peanuts and getting them involved in growing them, this has been a pleasant experience for me and I just hope and pray that you will be able to harvest them this fall. I have never used the liquid Gypsum but it is available in liquid form. The garden area in the recent pictures look like a different location than the original pictures, is that Alfalfa in the field behind the garden. This year was the first time I had tried to put mulch ( Wheat Straw )around the Peanuts but so far it seems to be working to help retain moisture around the plants, with all that Alfalfa up there you might try using some of it for mulch, for sure it will not hurt the peanuts and help to shade out some weeds and there is a spray that you can use to kill the weeds that come up, can't remember the name right now but will send that info later.

Maybe I can send up a few cotton seed for you to try next year and we will make a Cotton Picker out of you.

Bob just came in from watering our peanuts which by the way seemed to all come up at once today.  Temperature hit 82F and I'm freaking melting :puke:.  I love your high tech system that Mr. Pan built :innocentwhistle:.  We also gave them a shot of 28-0-0 today[cause that is what I had on hand].

The temperature here today got up to 96 degrees and is pretty much suppose to stay that way for the rest of the week, rough on me but just the kind of weather to grow peanuts, with the 82 degrees there should get the peanuts to start growing good, give Bob a pat on the back for me sounds like he's going to be the main Peanut man. Careful with the 28-0-0  don't burn them.  cc

Hey Barry, Love your garden,  :bowingsmilie: The gypsum is right on and glad you found it, apply when plants start to bloom usually about a month after they come up, the blooms indicate that the plants are putting on peanuts, even if you put it on before blooms is OK I think, I apply by hand right on top of the row the gypsum will not burn the plants and will soften the soil and make harvesting easier when pulling the plants out of the ground the peanuts will cling to the vine. Don't water the peanuts two weeks before harvest except maybe the day before harvest if soil is hard, the reason is when mature they will start to germinate if to much moisture is present.
The date on the pictures shows 02/07/2010, is that correct ? The soil in your garden looks very fertile, never seen Corn rows that close, . You do have a wide variety veggies planted some that will not grow here, glad you gave us the tour of your garden. cc

Barry, Nothing to be embarrassed about, I'm impressed that they even came up with the cool weather you have had and the rest of your garden looks great, don't know what all the plants are but they sure are growing good. I use Miracle Grow on the peanuts mixed with the Sea Weed also some Calcium Nitrate that I add to the water when irrigating at least once a week. I was not trying to embarrass you only letting everyone see the progress for my patch, I have been growing these thing for years and learn something new every year, The Sea Weed for sure has been a big improvement this year, the vines have more blooms than I have ever seen on any that I have grown in the past and unless something happens it could be the best crop I have ever grown. cc

You are probably right Barry as all the other plants look like they have plenty, have you used any Herbicides in the garden?  The Plants are big enough to put the Gypsum on even if not blooming, the Gypsum will sweeten the soil and allow the plants to take up more nutrients. cc

No herbicides in my garden Carl as I don't use it there.  I do however put our wood ash's from the fire in that spot and am wondering about that.  We'll put the gypsum out today then and thanks.
Title: Re: I've got a shot at becoming President.
Post by: Carolina Coyote on July 31, 2010, 01:14:54 PM
The Wood Ash will do more good than harm for sure,I don't think that is a problem. The soil may be a little Alkaline and the gypsum will help that, Peanuts like a higher PH than most plants above 6.0 is better. I like to put Lime and Gypsum on my Garden as our area does not have that great of a soil and needs all the help it can get, that's why I am impressed with the Sea Weed, my plants have done better this year than ever. It restores the natural bacterial in the soil and replaces lot of minerals that fertilizers leach out of the soil. I am also looking at a couple more thing that I plan to try next year. Cc

Carl I am totally embarrassed now :doh2:.   After spending the last two hours hoeing and working in the gardens with the family[amazing how much more the boys get done when dads about :wo:] I learned that it is a fertilizer deficiency on that end of the peanuts.  Seems Bob and Wilma were experimenting the last time they fertilized and that 12 feet didn't get any last time[right to the stick they put in for a marker].  You I will listen to about gardening anytime as you have proven your worth :bowingsmilie: :bowingsmilie:.   Bob is going to put the gypsum on after dinner and he asked how much and how far from the plant .
Title: Re: I've got a shot at becoming President.
Post by: Carolina Coyote on July 31, 2010, 02:11:56 PM
Spread the Gypsum on top of the plants, just walk down the row and spread by hand. You have a 40lb bag , use all of it . I put around 20 lbs for a 100 foot row,  it will not burn the plants . The lack of Fertilizer explains the yellow leaves, I would get some liquid fertilizer and water it in. I have been putting it on mine every week. cc

With it warming up maybe you could put something around the plants to help keep the warrmth in the ground overnight Barry. I don't like gardening so I don't know if it will work or not. I thought maybe peat moss would help keep/attract the heat since it's almost black. At least ours down here is anyhow.

Barry, Are there any blooms on the plant, if so it is putting on peanuts, I pulled some of mind this morning because the plants were wilting down, not sure if it is Powder Mildew on them or not, there is a white substance on the base of the plants and the ground around them, at any rate I think I need to get those plants out of the ground before it spreads to much.  I have sprayed them regularly with Fungicide but I think I have so much foliage that the sun is not penetrating enough. I planted the rows 3 feet apart but with the growth that i had this year and they are still growing  and no sunlight gets to the ground, but the peanut on the vines are looking good right now but need another 10 to 15 days to be prime. I'm sure your curiosity is getting the best of you and pulling up one of the plants is probably the best cure. cc

Nothing, Nada, emptier than a lovers promise :pout:.  But man do them baby's got a whack of roots.  I got's a notion our goofy weather up here this year isn't helping any.  We have had one day where it reached 90F and more cloud than I have ever saw in one year before.  That and the last week we couldn't see the sky for the smoke coming over from BC[Okanogan could you do something about that].

Yea Man they do have a good root system, I did not see any blooms on the plants in the picture, the cool weather and cloudy days don't do much for Peanuts, I have to much foliage on mind this year. I just went out and pulled up some more that was beginning to wilt down, with the red clay soil in this patch it does not drain good but it has made the plants grow like crazy but I have learned this year of what I will need to do next year. I will make some pictures this week and show you what mine are doing. The variety that you have and what I planted  calls for 120 days but I normally can start pulling them up in 95 to 100 days but there are varieties that make in 90 days and maybe you can try them next year. The season is not over yet maybe they will be enough time for them to put on some peanuts before frost. .cc

Barry, Its all in the weather, I saw in one of your post the other day that you had a frost one morning already so I agree they not going to make it. If I had not been able to water mine they would not look the way they do, If I had some of your soil down here I think we could really make some impressive Peanuts, I will need to do something to soften the soil in this patch next year, the ground is hard as a brick. cc

I don't want to bore you guys but I pulled up some more Peanuts today as there is a Carolina Football game on tomorrow night and we always enjoy eating Boiled Peanut while watching the game, these Peanuts were farther out the row than the ones I pulled yesterday were they got more morning sun and are a little more full, if the rest of the patch turns out like these it should be a pretty good year.

Some on the vine

CC - Do ya think that peanuts would make it out here, plenty of sun and no frost.  Would have to add plenty of mulch to the soil and also water on a regular basis.  However the soil is rich and everything is lush - during our sixty day (+/-) monsoon season.

Mr.JohnP, I think Peanuts  would love Arizona, as long as you can put the water to them, The variety I plant requires 120 days to mature. If you have rich loamy soil is ideal, my regular garden spot I have added lots of humus and the ground is soft and when the plants are mature you can pull them up by hand but where I planted them this year with no rain for the last 6 or 7 weeks the ground is as hard as a rock, I believe you could cut bricks out of it. I tried some new things this year and learned a lot on what I will do next year. If the ground had been soft I think we would have made 4 times as many peanuts.
Gametime Saturday I will be enjoying these peanuts along with some of my Family and friends, The Gamecocks will be playing Auburn so it should be a very good game. cc

I enjoyed watching them grow this year but I am happy to have them all out of the ground and Thankful of the good crop we made. cc

The last Harvest went pretty well with help from a couple of my BIL's and SIL's and Spanky, the rest of the patch was pulled by hand as the rain Sunday and Monday the ground was soft enough to allow pulling them up rather than having to dig them with the Bobcat, I have attached a few pictures to show the results.

Spanky gleaning the patch:

Brother in law cleaning up the vines and putting on the mulch pile:

What we picked off the vines:

The process of washing them, from one bucket to the other several times to remove as much dirt as possible and to cull out any bad ones.

And then into the house for more washing and culling:

Then put into the pot for boiling:

Add salt, The amount of salt depends on the amount of peanuts to be boiled and how salty you want them, on this pot you can see the salt added, may be 4 table spoons or more.

Add water, The peanuts will soak up quite a bit of water so make sure to add plenty of water:

Stir in salt and apply heat:

Bring water to boil and reduce heat to prevent pot from boiling over:

Put lid on pot and let boil  30 to 45 minutes. Some people may want to boil longer or less but this time works for us. Then let them soak until they sink in the water, check for taste if not salty enough add more salt, if taste is OK pour off brine and eat. Shell and eat as a snack, discard hulls.

Ready to eat:

Hope this is of some help to Barry. cc

There are lots of ways to fix Peanuts, Boiling them to me are only good when they are still green or (new crop) and that could be the reason lots of people do not like Boiled peanuts as most of the roadside stands that sell them will use dried peanuts and I don't like them myself, but fresh out of the garden they are excellent if properly prepared, wish you guys was close enough so that I could share with you. cc

CC, Wilma just read the last post with pictures and said, "I sure would like to try that".  Translated it means can you send up another batch of peanuts for us to try on a different year where the growing season may be longer?  Even the crops up here didn't all get to maturity this year because of the terrible late start and cool season we had.  I went through our seed booklets and peanuts just aren't a big enough seller up here for them to bother.  Wife says we can loosen the purse strings enough to pay for more seed and shipping :yahoo:. Also some of them cotton seeds you have talked about would be great cause I can see profit in the weevils. :eyebrow:.

Barry I for sure will send more seed next year, maybe several varieties so you can experiment and see if one works better than the other, The Cotton seed I will also send, and some Okra seed. Sorry that they did not make this year for I am sure you would have enjoyed harvesting them. Let me know about how many you want to plant figuring for about 1/2 pound for 100 feet row. I will see if the place where I buy my seed has any left over and will get them on their way, if not may have to wait until spring to get seed. cc

A little update on the Cotton Fields, This might be the only Cotton that Barry has ever seen in the field.

The next time down the leaves may be off and I will take more pictures, the farmer was a little late planting cotton on our place and its not quite ready to spray the defoliate, but they are picking cotton on other farms now.

No thorns on the plant, the hight of the cotton depends on a good year or bad year, there are some fields  on the Wanderosia that the Cotton is around six fee tall this year but I have seen some around that was only a couple of feet tall, when I was a kid we had a fall break in school so the kids could help pick Cotton and I could pick 200 lbs a day My Mama could pick 400 lbs a day. Yea I'm a Cotton Picker.  cc

Barry, They defoliate to so the leaves fall off before picking, keeps the leaves out of the Cotton, If I am down there when they are picking I will try and get some pictures, The seeds are in the Cotton and after picking they run the Cotton thru the Gin and remove the seeds and trash, Cotton seeds are used in Cow feed among other things, makes good side dressing on plants also. I have picked a little for you and will send when I get the Peanut seed for you if you still want some more after Coyote101 trashed the Peanuts. CC
