Reading one of the other threads got me thinking. I've seen some dumb gun handling in my time. While loading his new gun this fella forgot to cut the string that held the price tag on the gun. His finger wasn't on the trigger, but his hand did grip the string thus pulling the trigger for him. When he released the action on the semi-auto 12ga it went off. Luckily it was pointed in a safe direction and nobody was hurt. Another young man in Walton, WV pick up a .357mag and accidentally shoot his own calf muscle. He pulls the handgun from behind the store counter and says "does anyone want to" BOOM. :shock2: Both things happened in the late 70s, but it's always stuck with me. Now days I don't hesitate to speak up if I see something going down. When I'm shooting at the range I keep an eye on the people around me.
I know it's not the best idea to post things like this, but if it makes you think the next time you load or unload it's worth it.
I have kind of a habit to watch for it also. It amazes me how reckless some people can be.
I think the scariest stuff I've seen or gone through was while educating my son, in the house and in the field. I cant believe I'm still alive. :holdon:
I love watching for reckless firearm handling on some of these hunting videos. :laf:
i didnt see it i did it. roommate in Coast guard had a S&W 40 cal and he was on duty ine night and got it out to look at. was in his room and sighter in on the doorknob( i grew up hearing treat every gun like it's loaded ) momentary lapse of reason , blew the dooknob all to chit :doh2: :holdon: :nofgr: :rolleye:. we lived in apt at merrit island fl , when that gun went off , do did some bodily functions( not literally but close to it ). Now I am thinking about 5-10 min cops gunna show and called my step dad to say what do i do when get here . he said tellem u cleaning it. not a problem cops never showed . WHEEW, was at walmart at 1am buying a new door knob, went thru his wall into my bed room and hit the floor and slid into my closet(the bullet. I know better now . L , I knew better then
:doh2: Hang on a sec here, I gotta try to read that one again vayotehowler :laf:
yeah u read right was looking at his 40 and sighted in the door knob and shot the door knob into pieces and went the the wall that divided his bedroom from mine in the apt , and was worried about the bullet going thru to other apt next door, and found the hole in the carpet where it hit the floor in my room and slug slid into the closet across the room . Scary i know!!!!
NOT ONE OF MY FINER MOMENTS. see everyone at LBL , jsut kidding , I am emphatic on safety after that incident. more so than before that lapse in judgement anyway
I would like to know what kind of gun the boy was handling in that discharge incident and the details of the shooting. Their local paper said he was loading the gun when it went off. Muzzle discipline was not followed obviously. A very sad accident that has ruined the lives of all involved.
I heard there was an accidental discharge at that FnF Redbird hunt back in '09. Accidents can happen at any time. Thank God no one was standing in the line of fire.
I think I put this on here once before.
I had been muzzle loading deer hunting with one of my sons. He was 18 at the time. I had already pulled my cap off my gun and was sitting in the truck waiting on him to do the same. There was a big briar bush on his side of the truck and he got his arm hung up in it. He was trying to jerk his arm out of the briars and had his gun pointed towards the inside of the truck. I was just getting ready to tell him to point his gun away when it went off. A 50 cal M/L is VERY loud when it goes off inside your vehical. It instantly filled the whole cab with thick smoke. I felt a sting in my leg and I'm thinking, "he just shot me". I was trying to look thru the smoke for blood. Even feeling my leg then putting my hand up to my face to see if there was any blood. I opened my door so the smoke could clear and checked myself out. A piece of the bullet jacket had hit me but didn't go thru the thick coveralls I had on. :whew: The bullet went into the glove box, exploded the Maglight flashlight inside, then thru the heater control box, and finally stopping with a big dent in the floorboard about an inch above my toe where I had my foot on the gas pedal. When I looked at him he was sure he only had seconds to live. I WAS MAD !!! :argh: :argh: :argh: I was so mad that I probably wouldv'e hurt him so I told him to just shut up and get in the truck. He was crying all the way home cause he knew something was coming. I just let him think about it for a few days. He learned his lesson.
I was at a gun auction in the southern part of the Hoosier state and during the pre auction while we were checking out the firearms before the bidding someone farther up the line was looking at a shot gun and it went off. Shot a hole in the wall behind the table full of firearms. 20 gauge semi-auto and some one had left it loaded when it went to auction. The firearm even had two more shells in it. Luckily no one was hurt but there were a lot of people that were pissed at the guy handling the firearm and the auction company for not checking. Then when the auction was about half way through they had some air rifles that were up for bid and one of the handlers was holding it up for everyone to see as it was being bid on he pulled the trigger and shot out one of the 8 foot fluorescent lights. People wern't to happy with him either.
So that was two accidental discharges in one auction. If you have ever been to firearms auction you probably have noticed the number of people that will handel the firearms and have no idea about muzzle discipline or how to treat a firearm.
Here is an incident that I know happened because I was there. I was at my favorite gun dealer's store (6000 guns under one roof). All of the long guns are on racks where any one can pick them up. I saw one of the employees going down row after row of shotguns checking the chambers. I discreetly asked her what was going on and, because she knew me, said that some one had slipped a live shell in a shotgun and put it back on the shelf. She was checking them all now. No discharge happened but it makes you wonder what kind of nut case would intentionally set a gun up to possible cause injury or death to someone.
About 12 years ago me and 3 other guys were rabbit hunting the one guy brought his young boy along the boy was between 10 and 12 years old he was carrying a .410 single shot and I had kicked up a rabbit and there were no shots fired as we kept walking along and had thought the boy was being watched by his dad.The boy walking between me and his dad his gun went off and the shot kicked dirt up in my face.
When I asked what happened the boy had cocked his gun when I kicked up the rabbit and nobody checked him out before we started walking again and while walking he was trying to let the hammer back down easily and it slipped and fired the gun and that is the closest I came to being shot :whew:
I was at the Red Bird Incident.......... and I was damn near SHOT.
There was nothing accidental about it...... the trigger was pulled on purpose to show it was unloaded...... And I was against this practice before..... and I most certainly am now.
The round hit the ground......VERY close to my face, causing gravel to scratch my glasses. :argh:

You are going to have to go into further detail for this one. My mind conjures up weird images when someone says a round "hit the ground very close to their face".
Were you taking a nap? Pooping on a wood pile?
Please explain.
ROFLMAO!!! :alscalls:
I once had one accidently discharge . I was reloading my double barrel after firing at doves. As I closed the barrels both barrels went of nearly jerking hte gun from my hands. Since I always practiced good safetey n0o one was hurt. But it made me even more aware of how quickly things out of your control can happen. Gunsmith found a bad sear that had possibly been bent from the factory. I had onwed this gun for several years by then and still do. But you can bet I watch where it's looking any time I handle it. Same for any gun.
What scares the crap out of me at times is hunting with newbies like I do. Am amazed at some of hte things I have seen by folks definately old enough to know better. Even told one he needed to take a hunters safetey course as soon as possible. Jimmie

We had just unloaded at a running coyote....... We were both using Ar-15's ......... The only extra shells I had were in the compartment in the buttstock....... I knelt down to remove the shells, and my backpak....... I look at the other guy and he is gonna pull the trigger to clear the gun........ I say....... CLEAR YOUR GUN MAN! DONT>>>>>>> he says Oh its empty......... BANG!!!!!!!! Right beside me....... If he weren't so old Ida beat his ass!
TO CLEAR YOUR GUN YOU OPEN THE CHAMBER BY HAND>>>>>>> AND LOOK UP INTO THE CHAMBER TO SEE IF THERE ARE ANY SHELLS>>>>>>> THEN YOU STILL TREAT IT AS THOUGH ITS LOADED!!!!!
And if you dont know how ........then you never hunt with me again.

That cleared that up.
 One question though. My bolt locks to the rear on my AR as does every AR and M-16 I ever shot. I have never had to
open the bolt to clear the chamber on an empty AR by hand. The bolt will already be open to the rear if it's empty. Looking into the chamber is always a good idea though to make sure there isn't one hung up.
If I have to clear the gun by opening the chamber by hand, that will automatically tell me there is one still in the chamber.

Put you on trial? I don't think you will ever understand me Al and I have learned to accept that. I simply tease at you, the same as I do several others, and you always take it wrong.
Do you think when I say about myself, "I am five and half feet anyway you turn me", that I am putting myself on trial?
What about when I give myself a hard time for being fat or eating Twinkies, am I putting myself on trial?
I am merely attempting to be humorous. Humor seems to escape you when it is directed your way, but you are more than happy to laugh when it's directed at someone else.

People who can't control their guns don't hunt with me twice . Had one fella shoot his big toe in my truck and that was lucky cause he wanted to carry the gun muzzle up in the vehicle :shock2:. Using old guns as much as I do the chances of them going off by accident multiply exponentially as the sears can be worn, you have to physically uncock them and hang fires. This makes one even more cognizant of the direction the firearm is pointed.
I don't see anything in my post that even suggests I thought it was funny you got shot towards. You confound me with this. :wo:
So let's delve back a little deeper into our past encounters. Did you really want me to kiss your butt....like literally or is that just a figure of speech? :innocentwhistle:

I got an idea. Let's get a third party that we can give our passwords to and let them read our pm's and see if they think they are terrible. You game?
We can get Hawksfeather or Champion, that way we would have impartial parties and see what they think of the embellishment you put in your pm's to me.
I say let's go for it. I will gladly let a third party read my 846 private messages from everyone that ever sent me one and every one that I ever sent out. That is the only way to be sure none of them get altered before they make it to the front. :eyebrownod:

I was following proper safety procedures as I was working on the functionality of this fire arm and knew that it may not work properly. BUT it did scare the bejesus out of me when it happened. I do remember telling you that, but you were quite nasty in the way you let me know. Just because I told you to let me know about it, doesn't mean I was going to agree with you. Sorry, it just doesn't work that way. :nono:
You sent me a pm telling me that I was trying to desecrate the memories of some of your deceased friends that you shared those memories with and that you weren't about to let me ruin your precious memories of them with my attempts to be funny. That's total democrat style bull piss. Just had to go and play the "I'm a victim card", which is darn near as sorry as playing the "your a racist" card. Typical liberal stuff though. I was playing and you tried to make it sound like I somehow knew that your deceased friends had been with you during those times and that I was intentionally trying to smear them. I ask you this? Has anyone ever seen me make fun of anyone who is dead? You know better than this AL and
SHAME ON YOU for being such a baby and for always trying to "one up" someone every time they say something. That makes people not want to participate either. You always have to out do someone else when they tell a story. You are a self serving, self centered, condescending prick yourself. That and you always play the "I am so poor" card and then every time I turn around you have something that I dang sure can't afford and I have had a job ever since I was 15 years old. So tell me. How does that work? You don't work but you have more stuff than 90% of us that do work every day of our lives. Must be nice to set on your ass every day and not have to work and still afford all those fancy little toys you come up with and get to hunt and fish whenever you want too. OH and for the record, I will be going in for an MRI on Friday at 11:45 to see if I have to have back surgery again, because unlike some, I do have a hurt back and yet I still have to stand on concrete all day, every day and still do my job. If I don't, my babies don't eat and that is unacceptable. I would rather die or be crippled than to see my children do without food or clothes. It's just called being a man and taking care of those that depend on him. Am I doing anything special? Nope. Most the "men" I know on this board do the same thing every day.
I have said enough for now.

Now, back to the subject at hand, "What's the worst you've seen? " Sorry Roundman, I think I got a tiny bit sidetracked. :whew:
My unit was in Ft. Stewart Georgia on maneuvers back in '89 or '90. One of our Lieutenants had injured his foot and had taken his boot off to ice it down. While he was setting there, one of the Privates said, "I'll take care of that foot for you L.T." and pulled his .45 from it's holster. He aimed the dang thing at the officer's foot and "BAM"!!!
I thought it blew the thing off!! There wasn't suppose to be any "live ammo" out there, but this little prick got the bright idea to load his Colt with his own ammo to "protect him from the gators and rattlesnakes".
That's all fine and good, but to forget you loaded the dang thing and shoot someones foot!!! :doh2:
Never saw that guy again. Don't know what happened to him, but my guess is that he didn't enjoy it. :nono:
Might not be the worst, but bothers me the most.
Sitting in my tree stand in deer season, and seeing another hunter look at me through the scope of his rifle.
As for editing post............
Have you ever read some of the stuff I've written on this board over the years?

Al @ THO - who normally has his foot in his mouth
I was Al's hunting partner in the Redbird incident. We were walking out a haul road. I was walking in the left tire track and Al was walking in the right track.
We had our rifles slung on our shouders as we walked toward the woods in the distance where we intended to do a stand. Suddenly we saw a coyote that we had apparently jumped out of the field to our right. The coyote was about 75 yards away running full speed diagonally away from us toward the road. Both of us unslung our rifles and started shooting at the coyote. It crossed the road about 100 yards from us and dissappeared over the hill to the left of the road. Al had knelt down to my right and a couple of steps behind me, to pick up brass, as I remember. We had no reason to unload as we still had a live coyote somewhere in front of us. Somehow I discharged my rifle into the ground about two feet in front of my right foot as I faced down the road toward where the coyote had dissapeared. I still do not know how this happened, but I must have touched the trigger with my finger. I also had not put on the safety as I should have. Fortunatly the rifle was pointed downrange. This round impacted the ground much closer to me than to Al and was not toward him. "IDIOT" is a very appropriate word to describe how I felt. I accept full responsibility for what I consider a "negligent discharge", not an "accidental discharge".
As an NRA Pistol instructor, who should have been more safe, I was doubly mortified at what I had done. I make no excuses for what happened. I am sorry for the distress I caused to Al. This incident was very humbling to me.
I would hope that we can all learn from my negligence and that some good can come from it. I fear that with my years of shooting in competition and becoming an instructor I may have taken my gun handling skills for granted. This kind of thing happens to less experienced shooters, to "IDIOTS"?? It could never happen to me?? Well, it did! In all my subsequent pistol classes I have used this incident to impress these things on my students.
Al, once again, I apologize to your for any distress I caused you!
Let's all be very careful out there!!
Jim (IDIOT)

Somehow I discharged my rifle into the ground about two feet in front of my right foot as I faced down the road toward where the coyote had dissapeared. ......... Fortunatly the rifle was pointed downrange. This round impacted the ground much closer to me than to Al and was not toward him.
This is very interesting to say the least. Al claims you nearly shot him. How can that be? If you shot downrange in front of your right foot and Al was to your right and a couple steps behind you, well then................. :wo:
Al said, " I was damn near SHOT.
There was nothing accidental about it...... the trigger was pulled on purpose to show it was unloaded......
The round hit the ground......VERY close to my face, causing gravel to scratch my glasses".
Very interesting perspective from the only two men that were actually present at the time of the discharge. :wo:
Thinags that make you go "Hmmmm"? Glad neither of you were hurt and accidents do happen. I bet it never happens to you again Frogman, never ever. :nono:
See here, his rendition of what transpired is somewhat different. :innocentwhistle:

I was at the Red Bird Incident.......... and I was damn near SHOT.
There was nothing accidental about it...... the trigger was pulled on purpose to show it was unloaded...... And I was against this practice before..... and I most certainly am now.
The round hit the ground......VERY close to my face, causing gravel to scratch my glasses. :argh:

Hey Fos, Ya need to share some of that popcorn with the sinister Obese Joker. :yoyo: :yoyo: :yoyo:
:holdon: Ok. This thread was in no way started to point a finger at anyone. It was to share a story and maybe learn "what not to do". As most threads go, somewhere in a story you can find something to laugh about. It might be someone shooting at the tires on a thief's vehicle, it might be an 18 year old that thinks his dads gonna kick his butt for shooting dad's truck, or it could be how NOT to pick up a live coyote.
The Redbird video clip was my way to get us back on track with a little humor not a dig on Frogman. If it came across that way I'm sorry.
Back on track?

You're a good man Fos. Got anything to drink with this popcorn?
Small 'fridge is behind and to the right of me. Plenty of cold cerveza and soda.
Bring some pretzels!
Still running your suck?
I have never asked for pity....... nor charity...from this nor any other board........
I have worked all my life for what I have......Since I was 14yrs. old....
I am not sorry I have accumulated cool things that you dont have......Why? ....... I worked for them and paid for them....
You must be only reading your own opinions to think otherwise!
I have had some real problems the last couple of years.......Some of them I have let you folks know about....... Some I have not.
From what I have seen......Its no different than the trials I have seen you going through from time to time.....So somehow you have the right to ask for a prayer or three and I am not allowed.....because it offends you?! GET A LIFE DUDE!
Yea Mine and Frogmans stories differ.......As do our hunting ethics.....Thats why I wont go hunting with him no more....
And yea things like this happen.......But there is more to it than that.....and I aint gonna beat the guy into the ground about it, I simply ended our hunting together......
I aint a Democrat so you are clearly delusional and misrepresented. (just running your suck)
I can only hope......one day when you have a rough time of things Bop, and your really down...... NO ONE ........Kicks ya.... As you are trying to do to me ....... Right now.....And I hope I have not come off that way to anyone......EVER.
I have friends here.......As do you...... And I care.......As do they....Thats why my phone started ringing again last night.
And if I let them know on here what is going on in my life......Why I aint been turning.....Or I aint been on in a while....
Thats just gonna have to be OK......If you chose to turn the channel sorta speak.....Go ahead.....I will sleep fine.
When your dad was taken to the hospital and someone posted it...... Without hesitation......I turned off my monitor...... Bowed my head and prayed...As I do for anyone... I certainly did not take offense......Nor make fun! And I never would.
I have asked you all I can......... Will ya stop this nonsense?
And you probably wont...... :iroll: But I am done ruining this thread....... If you want to talk........ fine........ Let me know.... If ya dont........ Thats to bad....... But I will no longer bite this bait......
Frogman-- I've never personally had this happen to me & I can't imagine how difficult it would be to admit this on an open Forum the way you did. Congratulations on standing up like you did.
I was going to tell about the time I got shot, but the popcorn's ready and I can't let it burn.

I noticed you had to "one up" me again. I said I had been working since I was 15...........so naturally you have since you were 14. Go figure. :iroll: Typical you.
You have worked for everything you accumalated, but you haven't had a job for 2 years. :doh2: :doh2: Can you hear yourself stupid? Hello!!! Anyone home? :rolleye:
And don't even tell me you didn't get expensive stuff in the last two years. THAT CRAP WON'T FLOAT!! And you call Frogman an idiot. How nice!! :innocentwhistle:
I'm not going to bother you much anymore, but you better do likewise. I don't wish bad on you, I don't wish sickness or anything else. Just shut your mouth when it comes to me and we'll do pretty good. Your nutty than a squirrel turd anyway, so I don't think you understand my humor no matter how simple I make it. Have a nice time on the board and I will too.

This quote right here has bothered me ever since I read it. Just out of curiosity, do you even own an AR-15 AL? :wo:
"better do likewise"
You think this scares me.......? :nono: Your Very wrong.
So ya had to turn to a threat huh?
I have worked in the last two years some..... you simply read what ya want to......then stop.
and if you look through a couple of years posts you will see that I have always said "since I was 14" Jackass!!!!!
What I own is nunya dayum business...... I explained it once to ya...... so try actually reading.
You seem to find pleasure in the fact that you have a job.......good.......always remember it......Someday your plant might close and then we can talk.

From now on you will be dubbed Squirrel Turd and I suppose you know why. I'll just abbreviate down to S.T.
Oh, I'm sorry AL. Abbreviate means to shorten it up so I don't have to type all that. Sorry about that.
Have a nice day running "your suck". BTW, around here that means a whole different something. :innocentwhistle:
BTW, you bit the bait. :alscalls:
I had one night I was hunting with my uncle and I was working a fox in. he started to get situated for the shot and I hear bang. I said WTH was that. Oops was his reply. I was in the safe zone but he definitely wasn't aimin it at the fox either. I said no more oops. he said ok and that was the only time I ever have dealt with a accidental discharge.
Quoterunning "your suck". BTW, around here that means a whole different something.
I think it means the same thing up here as well bop. if someone mouthed that off to someone up here in person they are most likely gonna be picking themselves up off the ground from getting cold cocked in their suck.

Duration and volume I think are the deciding factors.
I know I am tired of watching it. Think I will go outside and play.

semp u quote is appropriate for this thread, if you can avoid a fair fight, lmao seeems to be the rule on this . I am not on the same level as alot of you guys , but it is the season to bury grievances and I think most are christians if not all, and are we fightin for our glory or his . I understand people dont all get along all the time but for the holidays bury the hatchet . in sudnay school one time they said you dont have to forget but u do have to forgive. can we agree to that . I laff at some of what says , and al you have been very helpful in the past . You both contribute to all of us in your own way. this is a board about hunting something we all enjoy , we all do it differently and can learn from each other , I may be outta line but just care for ya both as we all do

I hate it that I offended some of you. I really do. I just felt that Jim (Frogman) had been beat up long enough for a mistake. Many of us know that Frogman made a mistake, but the I believe with all my heart that Frogman's heart is in the right place. Does he mess up? Yep. Has he stepped on a couple land mines? You bet he has.
Haven't we all though? Who here can say that their gun will NEVER, EVER accidentally discharge?
Jim (Frogman) is one of this board's true gentleman. His heart is good. He is kind and would never even think about hurting someone's feelings. So in turn, his feelings get hurt horribly and he just set's and takes it. No more. He paid his punishment and then some. He is as good a man as any that visits this board. Enough beating him up for several things, not just the shooting incident.
When I am talking about him being a gentleman. I'm talking about the kind like Jerry (Hawksfeather) or Pat (Coyote101) or John (Tikanni) or Chet (Coyotehunter1) and there are others. These men always carry themselves with dignity and character. They never stoop to make a point like a jerk like me does. I admire them for that. They are a true asset to this board. Frogman is very similar to them. His feelings have been hurt horribly over this and I, for one, can't stand that. I'll be the a$$ to help someone like that out. His soul his too gentle and his heart too kind to have done what I did. He and I talked quite awhile on the phone several times and I won't see him drug though the mud no longer. He doesn't deserve it.
Good for you, Bop. You put yourself in the line of fire for someone else. And now you've explained why. Admirable. I'd be proud to call you a friend. We all now understand what this is all about. Any further discussion is really unnecessaty, now. Your work is done. Take a breather. (insert thumbs up smiley).

Al would do anything he could to help a feller out, he helped me out when i had kidney cancer two years ago when he came out and fixxed my roof, he has done more then folks know behind the sceens that others dont know about and i am glad he his my friend. as far as Bop i only met him at lbl and i think he is a good person and he is much more rounder then me so i like him to :hahaha: and bop does good on this forum as well as Al and Jim. you guys dont have to like each other and thats fine but for the love of the forum can you guys let it be? i hope so

With all the things happening here, my wife's 14 yr old cousin just got shot above the ankle Saturday with a .243 by a boy that was hunting with him, his grandfather just asked them if the guns were on safety and as soon as he said it the gun went off. He had extensive surgery and they think they can save his foot. I dont want to go into details and yes there were adults there but I thank god he wasnt killed. Her family has suffered enough, this year.
You can never NEVER be too safe !
Sorry to hear this Vic!! Prayers sent out to your Family!!
Prayers sent.
Never trust a safety
Sad news. Prayers for all involved.
man that is aweful, hope he is ok. cant ever be to careful
That's sickening. I hope the foot heals back 100%. You just can't be too safe, whether it be riding a bike, hunting, slapping your wife, anything.
Be careful guys. I want to see everyone have a good Christmas.
That would not only suck, the pucker factor after something like that would be tremendous.
I hope everything turns out ok.
My heart goes out to the young lad, his family and everyone involved. I pray he will fully recover from his injuries.
Tragic and sad.
That's bad. I hope he's ok and things turn out well. With kids.... never assume anything. While teaching the son to drive I told him to get in the left lane. I ASSUMED he would check mirrors or the blind spot. Nope, he shoots into the left lane while tire smoke rolled. It's funny now, but he got an ear full then. :mad3:
this has been a test of the fins and fur beatdown and brawl emergency system . If this had been and actual beatdown and brawl bop an als would have been bloodied and bruised and probly both arrested and alot of hard feelings would have ensued . we now return u to your thread already in progress. On a serious note , we have had a tragedy here in va , A father was taking his his boys 10 and 7 hunting , the 10 year old has a .410 and the 7 yr old a bb gun, come across a deer and the younger boy shoots the deer with the pellet gun and runs to the deer the 10 yr old levels the .410 and hits the brother in back and he is pronounced dead at UVA hospital. Such a sad story cant imagine how that family feels , the dad must feel responsible , the brother must feel horrible, is really a sad story.
And where was the Dad when this happened
Oh my Prayers sent for all of them
the dad was standing right there and saw it all happen and it happened so fast according to the article
Vic that just plain is bad.
Vic,
I pray he recovers full use of his foot.
And prayers for the VA family - especially the 10 yr old.
