Well all my Southern Friends be very careful over the next couple days. It doesn't look promising down around there.   :rolleye: :rolleye:

We've had that much up here on the ground for a while now. Would really like to get out & hunt some but before the weather straightened up we ended up with nearly 1/2" of ice on top of it. That makes it a real PITA to walk thru. Every step your foot breaks thru & 1/2 the time your toe gets caught on the way back up. I think I'll pass for a few more days.  :laf: :laf:

Good advise Glen, I plan on enjoying the snow looking out the window, Few years back I went out with about 6 or 7 inches of snow on the ground, it was iced over like you said second step I made and feet flew out from under me and broke a leg. The south is never really prepared for the snow as most people here do not know how to drive in it. The Wrecker service loves it , the ditches will be full of car.  :eyebrow: cc

It really shows what a person gets used to having.  You get 6 or 7 inches and are stranded, we get 12 - 18 and are stranded, further north they get 24 3 36 inches and start to wear long pants.

Stay safe.

You can tell its cold in these parts if people are wearing socks with their sandals!    :laf:

Do they have spurs on their ankles?  :laf:

Most of the snow yesterday was gone by dark and did not snow last night but started coming down about 30 minutes ago and now they are saying we could get up to 12 inches of snow but further south it could be rain and icing mixed in with winds up to 35 mph. They are saying historical storm for the south. The icing will hit the Wanderosia in Georgia and I hate to think how much damage it will do down there, for sure next time down will be Chainsaws and Skid Loaders for several days.  :doh2:

:alscalls:  Socks with sandals is kind of a Seattle thing.  Gore-tex mountain parka, shorts and sandals with socks, sitting in the rain outside a Starbucks at a table with a sun umbrella.    We are across the line north of Seattle but it is common here also.  A friend visiting me from Albuquerque was so amazed by that sight that he had me drive around the block to take a second look at people drinking coffee outside in the rain.     :nono:

We got a little here about 4". Mostly ice now . I heard in Huntsville they had a few roads salted.

I usually have to pull a few northerners out the ditch when we get ice here. They are not used to driving on ice without salt and plows.

Socks and sandals when it gets cold. That had me rolling. Good one.

One picture is on interstate 59. They closed it right behind us. It was eery traveling 50miles without seeing another living soul on the road after the lead car left us in the powder.

That's a serious measure of bad when they close a highway.

Reminds me... In college days a friend and I were driving from E. WA to LA after Christmas down Hwy 97 in E. Oregon.  We missed a closed sign south of Bend or they closed it right after us, both ways.  Eerie is the right word for driving hours in powder snow with no other cars going either way.  Somewhere toward the south end of the closure near Klamath Falls we heard on the radio that the highway we were driving was closed.  At the south end we skirted around a barricade and kept going.

It is hard to imagine the storm that is now hitting the south.  I can't help but wonder if God is ribbing Al Gore and the global warmists about their prophecies.   :innocentwhistle:

2" of snow this morning with an inch of ice underneath. Supposed to get 40 today and sunshine so should be nice out in a few hours.

No sunshine for a few weeks is a real bummer will be glad to see some sunshine.I kinda understand now why my Yankee buddies are so grumpy and rude all the time. Long periods of snow and clouds would make me an azzhole too. :laf:

Ice is not your friend.  Even when it is called God's Pruning of trees it is nasty.  If the south hasn't been hit with a good ice storm for a few years you will have all kinds of limbs and trees down.  The good thing to remember is that Jim is always looking for more fire wood.

Well that is one of the good things about living in warmer areas.  Our snow will be with us for a while longer - thanks to that darned groundhog seeing his shadow.  But on the up side we are scheduled to get above freezing for a couple of days next week.

Well the snow is almost gone now, just the shady areas still have not melted, I think we got lucky on this storm, Powder stayed on and very little damage to the trees around the house, Where we have to worry about the snow MrJohn has to worry about getting sunburnt. :laf:
Got information a while ago that it was a major ice storm down in Georgia at the Wanderosia, limbs and trees down everywhere and Power is out in that area and may not be back on until sometime next week. :doh2:

What's all the fuss about a little snow? We've had nearly 109" and counting so far this year. We're currently ranked number 1 for the snowiest city this year...

I was headed for Kentland In. one balmy winter day in 1978, listening to an AM station out of Chicago when the dj whooped it up and started going on that the temperature finally got over freezing, the first time in 63 days...  the frost line in Kentland was down 5 feet that winter... if you died they had the service and put you in cold storage til the spring time when it thawed out... digging graves was to expensive if you had to hire a air compressor and a jack hammer to dig you in...

I talked with Sam yesterday my friend that owns the Wanderosa went down this past weekend and said the Ice Storm that hit down there is devastating as much as 35% of the trees in some places are broken or down, roads are impassable, power was still off and even power poles were broken, we plan to go down next week to start the clean up as rain this week will make the dirt roads difficult to run the Skid Steers. I will take pictures when I go down to show why a little snow and ice in the south is such a big deal. cc

Many of the newer homes have waterlines are buried deeper than that, just in case it gets cold. However, in some of the homes built much earlier, they are issued a "let run" for the remainder of the winter. This allows them to let their water run continuously in about a pencil sized stream without incurring a huge municipal water bill. This is happening all over the UP.

From the local tv station:

Title: Re: Snow Snow Snow
Post by: FinsnFur on February 19, 2014, 09:44:39 PM
I went down and paid my water bill tonight and they had already issued a "let run" notice. They want the lines closest to where the water comes into our houses to run a continuous pencil size stream. Water bill will be compensated for it.
Their theory is with the temps back up above zero now that the lines can burst as the frost comes up? I never heard of such a thing....... My water froze as the frost moved deeper and deeper into the ground. Probably cause some idiot put my crawlspace and water lines under the house :laf: But they freeze again when the frost lifts???? rreally???
Title: Re: Snow Snow Snow
Post by: MI VHNTR on February 20, 2014, 08:53:57 PM
The frost leaving the ground can cause the soil to heave up and cause pipes to twist, bend or break. You can see this here in the Spring because the roads/ground heave upwards and break the pavement. The counties put weight restrictions on the heavy trucks in an attempt to limit damage from frost heaving. The length of the weight restrictions is usually determined by temp and frost depth.
Title: Re: Snow Snow Snow
Post by: FinsnFur on February 20, 2014, 09:32:05 PM
Yep, all our roads are heaved up bad right now with these last few days in the high 30's. But were coming off some 30below temps.
But I still dont get how running the water will help stop them from breaking when the frost leaves if it's heaving ground that causes it. The ground will heave whether the waters running or not.

Snow snow snow is what we have.  Once in awhile I guess Mother Nature wants to remind us that we live in Canada so gives us some snow in place of rain.  It was supposed to snow a little three days ago and then warm up.  Oops...  still snowing with blizzard winds piling drifts across the roads, on a layer of ice from freezing rain when it almost warmed above freezing yesterday.  The weather folks keep predicting that it will warm up in the next 12-24 hours and keep revising that out another 12-24 hours.

Except for a run to the grocery store in 4x4 have stayed holed up.   Partial retirement is nice not to have to go out in this stuff.   :yoyo:

I went down to Georgia this past Monday to start the cleanup on the Wanderosia, it looks like a Hurricane went through down there , the pictures don't really show the damage as I took a few pictures the first day but after that just to busy, the damage is so wide spread thousands and thousands of acres with trees down and tops broken out, the pictures here are in the pines, the hardwoods had trees that were 3 to 4 feet in diameter blow over. Anyone want free fire wood come on down.

Yes, Ice and wind did all that but the hardwoods in swampy areas was a lot worse, the big trees that did not have deep root system and over and inch of ice built-up then wind just pushed them over, Yes Free firewood all you want, all you have to do is come get it. its hard to describe the damage as it is so wide spread its unbelievable, We can clean up the roads but the Thousands of acres of pines will be a big loss, Timber company's do not want to come in and try to savage, there is just nothing that can be done from what we are hearing.
