Title: One Man's Wilderness
Post by: coyote101 on June 03, 2008, 07:37:21 PM
One Man's Wilderness: An Alaskan Odyssey - Sam Keith and Richard Proenneke

Many of you may have seen the video Alone in the Wilderness on PBS. It is a fascinating video about Dick Proenneke, a guy who lived in Alaska and, at the age of 51, retired and went to the wilderness to see if he could survive for a year. With a few simple hand tools, he built a cabin and not only survived that first year, but ended up staying for more than thirty. What's especially great about this video is that Proenneke had a high quality video camera and documented much of the work that he did, so this is actual footage and not a reenactment. He also kept a very detailed journal. One Man's Wilderness: An Alaskan Odyssey contains much of that journal. It is fascinating to read and adds a lot to the video.

What I would like to do is pass the book around to anyone who would like to read it. If you are interested, just respond in this thread, and I'll put you on a list to get it.  Its going to Bopeye tomorrow and LORDDAL after that, but I'd like everyone who is interested to have a chance to read it. All I ask is that you read it in a reasonable amount of time and when you finish, reply again in this thread to notify anyone else who is interested. Get their information and then send the book to them. When nobody else wants to read it, the last guy can just send it back to me. If life in the Alaskan wilderness interests you, then you won't be disappointed in this book.

Oh yeah, the video comes along with the book, so you can watch it again without the PBS fund raising breaks, or if you've never seen it, watch it for the first time.

Pat

I should be done tomorrow. Sorry it took so long, but with the pain killers it seemed like everytime I started reading it would put me to sleep.  :eyebrownod:

No time limit Bopeye. I hope you're not needing the painkillers as often, but don't rush the recovery. Just do what the doctor, and your back, tell you you can do.

Betty, you need to update your e-mail address in your profile.
These people are trying to Private Message you...
You have the e-mail notification option switched on to be notified when you get a PM...
And they are bouncing back from the FnF server with a no such address, error.

The book and DVD made it back a couple of days ago, not much worse for the wear. They were out just shy of a year. In their travels they went to Tennessee, West Virginia, Iowa, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Arizona, Ohio, California, West Virginia again, Michigan, and then returned to me in Kentucky. Thanks to everyone that had them for taking such good care of them. I hope you enjoyed them, Dick Proenneke was quite an interesting guy.
