What's your caliber of choice and why?
Mines the 22-250. I shoot a ruger M77 markII stainless.
I'm addicted to the flat shooting range it provides.
Well personally I think Rugar $%#@% :hahaha: :innocentwhistle: but thats my opinion.
I shoot Remington sendaro 25 06 its a very good gun.
Ive also become very fond of the new savages with the
accu trigger they shoot great out of the box. aaaannd I also really enjoy my dpms
ar 15 in .223.
How long you had your Remington Ric?
3 years 5 or 6 deer a few yotes crows always hit the mark. :sneer:
I thought you were talking about the one you got for Wes. I was gonna pinch ya on that post.
Forgot it was a 243 :innocentwhistle:
LOL
I do remember a fond weekend with the .243, 3 yotes.
Two with the help of a good buddy. :yoyo:
either a .22-250 for the harvest ... or a 7mm Mauser for the pure and simple removal.
But that's just me.
LOL...ya just had to shove that BC Reticle in our faces didn't ya? :shck:
Niice LightForce by the way.
OKT...clean and swift with the Mauser uh? Well.....swift anyway. Reminds me of my first few years Deer hunting 15 years ago, my Dad had me packing his 8mm Mauser, gawd I hated shooting that cannon.
Really nice lookin weatherby Ill bet its a great shooter.
I have a pair of Ruger Mark II 220 Swifts. They're all I use.
Cuz I'm a speed freak. :eyebrow:
Brad
I yse a pair of Ruger M77 Mark II's.
A stainless steel 24'' barrelled .204 that I camo painted and a 22'' barrel .243
I've been using the .204 almost exclusively since I got it a little over a year ago. I just like the lower recoil of it versus the .243.
They both have leupolds on them now, although they both started out with cheaper glass. It didn't take too long to realize that you get what you pay for.

I like my Viper. Its 6#dry and shoots straight. .223(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y251/MIGHTY443rd/Picture002-1.jpg)
I like my Brownings. I have both Browning rifles and shot guns. Little expensive but worth it. I recently got me a Bushmaster AR. I am new to that type of rifle but I am liking it so far! I have plans of it being my close up coyote gun...
I also shoot a Ruger 22-250 that i reload for. Fast and flat with plenty of knockdown. But..............I really like that Viper, Criner has there :congrats:
JD
I am a 22-250 man myself but then again I like my AR-15's as well, and my 22 Hornet, and my Rem, and my......Well its really hard to pick one...lol
I have to lean real hard to the 22-250 though!
Brent
I loved my 22-250 until I got the AR-15. Hunting in the thick stuff here in Alabama you will need that second shot and the ar-15 gives you that opportunity. However I think a bolt action makes you a better shot. At least it does for me. I just got a 243 Remington VL that I will be using this year. We will see how it does.
Bob
I am going to have to say .223 with its big brother .12 gauge. I love this gun!
One of my favorite bang flop cartridges was the 22-243 middle-stead but I went through to many barrels. (I shoot to much) I then went through a caliber change every year and went with the .223 contender pistol with 14inch barrel. After several loses by not having a second shot I searched around more. I tried the savage 24F in 12ga and 22 hornet worked but still basically a single shot.Continued searching for a round for my application
I haven't had a shot over 200 yards in many years so that narrowed it down. Then I wanted it in the AR platform that narrowed it down more. Wanted to be able to shoot heavy bullets for penetrating at odd angles. That made it harder I already learned the .223 wasn't cutting it for me on shoulder or rear shots.
Short answer 300/221 fireball 300 whisper with AR platform perfect match for any coyote under 200 yards. I haven't lost any coyotes in the 2 years of using it.
Well to put this in proper context...... my next yote shot will be my first. When I lived in upstate NY there weren't any around. These days in NC they are still spotty, but seems like more around every year. I just got into calling this past spring and while I was lucky enough to call in a few, I never got off a shot. I picked up a Rem vssf in .223 and a Mosberg in 22-250/.223 and am optimistic that they will do it for me come fall. I've got an old savage lever action 30-30 that my dad gave me as a kid. It was old even back then and just iron sights, but it sure has done good for me with the deer.
My primary calling rifle is a 1962 production Remington 700 ADL in 222 Rem. "Old Reliable" sports it’s original 20” factory sporter carbine barrel and walnut stock. My other “coyote” rifles include a Rem. model 7 LSSS 22-250 and Savage semi-custom wood stocked model 10 in 243.
Did I mention I like wood? :rolleye:
I know this doesn't really fit here, but I thought I would put what I like. I like shotguns.
I used M-16's and such in the military, but shotguns have always been my deal.
Here's my new "go to" gun for coyotes and although I haven't "blooded" with it yet, I do look forward to it. It's an American Arms 10 gauge double barrel. It shoots a 3 1/2 inch shell. It has a little kick to it, but I really like it so far. Did I mention it's like carrying a 55 gallon drum.....a little heavy, but that's alright. I can use the exercise. :eyebrownod:
:shck:
Your a bigger man than I James. That thing would rock my world and my teeth when it went off. :eyebrownod:
It's not as bad as you think Jim. It's heavy enough that it keeps some of the recoil down.
Coyotehunter1's dad is a gunsmith and he worked it a little for me to suit my needs.
I shot clay pigeons with it the other day and didn't do too bad. A few boxes of shells and I was feeling it though. :holdon:
I guess I might be trying to cover up for other shortcomings. :hahaha:
Well, moving right along........ :innocentwhistle:
And old Gerry Blair thought he was hell on wheels with old moose dick :innocentwhistle:
I will stick with my dinky little twelve pump thank you very much. It kills enough trees to suit me just fine
I have to say that out of all the rigs I have, my favorite is my old 788 in 22-250. Barrel is getting a bit worn after all these years but she just feels so gooooood :eyebrow: Jimmie
Well, I was glad to see a few shot guns pop up. I was starting to feel like a red headed step child. I like my 12 ga. Shoot #4 buck and it seems to do the ttick. When I have to carry a rifle. the 243 gets the nod.
But for where and how I hunt, I just feel comfortable with a shotgun. The only question I have to answer most days is - which one today LOL.
AL
THO Game Calls
I just shoot my old Mauser.
It ain't real fancy but I did most of the work myself.
Nice looking rifle and pretty good shooting there Rich! So if you miss , you know it isn't the rifles fault! :nofgr:
I'm going to be starting this year off with a fairly new rifle. I bought one of the winchester model 70 Ultimate Shadow rifles in 223 WSSM. I did scare a couple of dogs with it back in March but I have yet to bring blood with it. Thats going to stop in about a month though.
Mossbergs new Tactical turkey in 835ultimag 3 1/2 Mag. Havent had it long enough to bloody. Warning: DO NOT SHOOT THIS FIREARM IF YOUR TEETH BLEED EASY OR HAVE NOSE BLEEDS. THIS FIREARM WILL KICK THE CRACK OUT OF YOUR @SS. :eyebrownod: I put a Buckkicker buckshot choke on it. Nice patterns out to 50 yards. Even with the kick I love this shotgun !!
Jeb
No, I don't have gingivitis, but I think it'd still make my teeth bleed.
Nice set up ya got there Jim. I think everyone should have at least one world rocker in their arsenal, and that baby would definitely rock ones world. :eyebrownod:
I have a russian combo gun .223/12ga. it kicks like a mule. It has a simmons pro diamond turkey scope on it. so far everything that I have pointed it at has died. I also built a mossberg500 with a tactical stock on it. It has a red dot scope on it and is the same gun I killed my first predator by calling.
I am shooting a savage Model 111E in 22/250 topped with a tasco high country scope. Want a better scope but till I get the money I will keep using the one I have.
Looking to add a lightforce light to it. That may be next week. Keep your fingers crossed that the money comes in
I started off with a 222 Remington back in the early 60's, thought I needed more power so I went to a 22-250. Later the same year I went to a Custom 25-06, stayed with that caliber for almost 20 years. As I got older I dropped back to a 223 Remington for several years. I'm now shooting a 221 Fireball and a 17 MACH IV for short range and have a 257 STW for some of the big canyons I call here in AZ. I've always had an ongoing love affair with Varmint rifles and have more than a few.
Welcome to the site Dan.
Interesting reading here. I usually carry my old faithful Rem. 11-87. Have had it for almost 20 years, and shot lots of game with it. It's only a 3" gun, but 4Buck still knocks em down. I hardly ever carry a rifle, but when I do, it's my Savage in 204 Ruger. Love that Accutrigger. Haven't bloodied it yet - I'll probably wish I had got something a little bigger than the 204. Time will tell.
I have some 221 F.b. and 223 DPMS, 22-250, 22-250 ackley, but my maine go to gun for coyotes is the 17 Rem. with 1-9" barrel shooting 30 gr. Golds...
I was wondering if the newer members had seen this? Maybe they'd like to put their 2 cents worth in...... :readthis:
I use an Encore 22-250 topped with a 5.5-16.5x44 Nikon Monarch for the rare opportunity I get to make the long shot. Most of my hunting keeps the range at 75 yds. or less. For that I use a 16" HBAR AR15 topped with a 3.3-10x44 Nikon Monarch. In the South, we don't have the problems with thick fur or big dogs or cats, and you gotta love the fast follow-up shot. Brian
Where you from Brian?
Texarkana, Ar in Southwest Arkansas on the Texas border and 50 miles north of the Louisiana border. I can actually step out my front door and spit on Texas. :laf:. Texarkana sits half in Arkansas and half in Texas. One of only 2 true border cities in the US. Brian.
Ahhhhhhhh :eyebrownod:
Plenty of fur down there
I like them all

Wow,nice collection River Runner
I sold 20 guns 11 years ago because i thought it was like a "job" taking care of them and i sold a Browning 22 lever action that had such a high sheen on the stock it looked plastic and i was NEVER GOING TO SHOOT IT,,a Belgium Browning 22 and 3 OLD Model 12's because i dont like Winchester and 2 old Winchester lever guns in 22 and 22 MAG
Colt 22 & 22MAG revolver with both cylinders and etc...etc.. Back then i was in a stage of: IF im NOT going to shoot them then i DONT want them around,,,,,,,SHIT I WAS A DUMB ASS BACK THEN !!! but i did keep a few to give to the kids and they have them now,,i could get some of them back BUT i wont get them for what i sold them for back then :doh2:
Bob
For this predator thing, I'm draging around a .243. It has the accu trigger.
For deer, its a 30-06 or bow.
For turkeys, a SBE 12 ga.

Man :doh2: Remind me to kick you square in the ass the next time I see you!
Nah, forget it, it'll cut into our hunting time to much.
I can kick & walk at the same time Bob so you better be careful!!
:roflmao:
ive kicked myself in the ass, and realized even if i DONT like a specific gun i can still keep it even if i dont shoot them :doh2: BUT that stuff hasnt happened since,,plus the kids are old enough to take care of them and my finances are a HELL OF A LOT better today then they were years ago,,i have a few right now that i will part with 1 of these days but there are other guns i have that i WILL NOT PART WITH for ANY reason!!!
I still whack coyotes with this old Mauser. It is a .257 Ackley, and I built it myself for the most part.
Why do I prefer that old Mauser? Because it lets me shoot like this---------
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v108/cronkcalls/DSCF0594.jpg)
That'll work Rich! :eyebrownod:
Good shootin' Rich. :congrats: I like my ole Rem 700 ADL .243. It shoots OK with factory ammo but I'm thinking about getting into reloading. I've been saving my brass. :wo:
I've had pretty good luck with a .243 on deer. You guys that use a .243 for coyotes, what bullets do you like?
I haven't shot a coyote with one of these yet, but I am gearing up to load a few. http://www.speer-bullets.com/ballistics/bullet_detail.aspx?id=18
Rich noticed it still shoots to the right. Might try bending the barrel over just a little. :roflmao:
I like the 223 for my type of hunting. Most, if not all, of my shots are under 100 yards and in mostly heavy cover. I built a LW 16" AR-15 just for predator hunting. While I've got more 223s, this is now my go to predator rifle. MI VHNTR
 You'll have to show me a pix MI VHNTR. :innocentwhistle:
vvarmitr, I'll get a picture up for you ASAP. MI VHNTR
Added on edit: I'm away from home now, but I'll be back in a day or two.
vvarmitr, I found this picture showing my LW AR. The picture was taken in late Dec. of last year. I've changed scopes/mounts since the picture was taken. The rifle now wears a Bushnell Elite 4200. MI VHNTR
(http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y209/MyMIPics/PC2800301.jpg)
That looks alot like my calling rifle!
Except I have a 1-4X power turkey scope and a socom collapsible stock on it. I love it!! I should use a shotgun in my area but I want to kill one with my AR.
When I ordered this rifle kit, I made sure that the whole barrel was done in a lightweight configuration, not the M4 stepped barrel. You cannot see it, but the majority of the barrel is .625 in diameter, so it's very light. I've also got a pre-ban Colt Match HBAR that's killed quite a few coyotes, but the LW gets used pretty much all of the time now. MI VHNTR
