Hello everyone,
The name is Rocky. I was asked if I would showcase a call for F&F and
accepted the offer. It's summer time so I chose some HOT Red Heart for this
custom closed reed, to go along with the polished aluminum and bead blasted
prints on this showcased call.
I was born in 1974 in Carlsbad NM and am still there today. I've been
chasing game and predators from the first Red Ryder to now. The Actual
predator hunting came from my grandfather whom took me out at a young age
and got me my first called and killed coyote at age 12 with a weems dual
tone and a Remington 700, 22-250. I've been after them every chance since.
I've been working on about anything with an engine since I could walk and
took a job out of high school working on gas compressors in the oilfield. I'm
still in the oilfield but, have gotten away from the engines and took a
plush job being a measurement tech. Lots of good area and critters get
looked over daily on the job which is a good bonus for the hunting part of
my life.
The first call I built was brought up to me by a buddy about 5 years ago
that wanted to know why I don't try and make my own calls. I never even
bothered with it or gave it much thought having called coyote, bobcat, and
fox with what I had on the lanyard. We went to my fathers, which was where I
had access to a lathe at the time and built a functional call in about an
hour out of a piece of a hickory hammer handle. I have and use that first
call still to this day. It's been fun and challenging turning calls as a
hobby ever since that first one .
The aluminum was something I did to have something different than everybody
else. I was getting supplies on line and started seeing all the custom calls
around and figured I would give it a go. I have added lots of things to
calls with ideas from lots of friends around the country and make them
different every time. The call building is a fun hobby and I'm going to keep
it a hobby. At first I thought I could make money at it but, found out real
quick that I didn't need another job. I just try to sell them as I make them
now to keep the stress and deadlines down to a minimum.
The family is involved with hunting too. I'm a husband to a wonderful wife
Julie and the father of two children Ross and Jalie. Julie loves to get out
and call coyotes with me when she can. With a few kills under her belt she
is hooked as bad as the rest of us. I have no idea why they put up with me
and my endless hobbies but, I thank them and love them for it.

Very nice Rocky. Your calls are definitely in a class all their own.
I love the steel, acrylic, wood combos. Absolutely stunning :yoyo:
I gotta come clean, and say that I own one of these beauts. Seen you selling it over yonder and had to send in an insurgent to get it since my opinions and presence are not allowed over there :innocentwhistle:

So I can vouch for the blinding beauty of your work, and I thank ya kindly for taking the time and generosity to run a Showcase for us.
Nice looking family. You got every reason to be proud of them, as them of you.
By the way, you gotta show us a pic of that hammer handle call some day :eyebrownod:
Rocky, Great bio and a really kick butt call!
Can't see the call pics Rocky, but I really don't need to, since I have seen lots of pics of your past work. Nice bio and I appreciate the fact your keeping it a hobby and not a job. It seems to be the folks that keep that train of thought, seem to be for the most part the better half of the hobby spinners. :congrats: :congrats:
Your a welcome addition the FNF call spinning family, if ya find it comfortable enough to stay, and I for one would like to see allot more of your work.
:congrats:
Did you get the extra call that was sent with the Clear Topped acrylic Jim? :innocentwhistle:
Glad to do the showcase for all of the F&F members.
Jim, If you need to shine that call up use some brasso on it. It will shine both ends.
Rocky

Rocky,
I enjoyed your Bio. I sure do miss the southwest. I grew up in the small town of Dixon between Espanola and Taos and made it pretty much all over the state but never really made it around Carlsbad except to play high school football. I am also the proud owner of two of your calls and can't say enough about them. Congrats on being the showcased maker this month!!
Rocky,
Thanks for participating in the caller showcase. Enjoyed reading about you and your family. Hope to see more of your calls and posts here on the forum.
Bob
First off i would like to say congrats on a great looking family. It was a great write up.It is also a beautiful call. The aluminum sure adds something special, and the track just sets it off even more.
Very beautiful family Rock, and extremely nice lokking show case call. :congrats:
Rocky,
Nice looking calls and great bio. This is a great way to learn more about the call makers. Again, nice work.
Jerry
No second call Rocky :shck: But the gift certificate for 50% of my next C-Bad purchase was more then enough. You shouldnt have.
The call with the track on it is a beauty. Good looking outdoors family, god bless.
Love the calls, Rocky.
Thats a nice lookin call Rocky!! I knew you would make a real nice one. You have a nice Family too & I gotta believe there are some good reasons for putting up with your hobbies. It probably has to do with the fact you cherish them & they cherish you.
You send extra calls with each one?? :wo: I'm thinking Jim got an "Insurgancy charge" on that one.
Great stuff there Rocky! Sounds like you've got your priorities straight. Really sharp call. :congrats:
I wish I could get my wife to even take a walk with me....... :innocentwhistle:
You are a blessed man. I really like your calls.......works of art.
Rocky
I enjoyed your Bio and the Family Pics also,, I LOVE the Acrylic and Aluminum look ! it must be the Machinist in me :laf: it does look very good :highclap:
I myself have been thinking on gettin a Manual Metal Lathe and a Bridgeport Mill   But your work is great,,Did you work as a Machinist in working with engines in the Oil Patch ? or in Racing,or did you just get on your Dad's Lathe 1 day and started making Chips fly ? well Keep up the GREAT WORK !!! and take care of the Wife and kids :highclap:
Bob
Great showcase, well done! ;yes; Very unique calls.... :thumb2:
Wonderful replies about the calls and family. Thanks guys!
Jim, I think that 50% off coupon was from your insurgent. :innocentwhistle:
Brad, the Oilfield is busy down here. Drilling and well reworking is going on like crazy. It is cool to get to be out in some of the hunting turf everyday and find the critters. Advantages during the job are always a bonus.
R.J., I'm looking forward to your trip to N.M. I'll be busy for sure around that time with the Elk and Deer hunt but, I'll be there for that Tika busting some coyote hides in N.M.
Ohio bob, I picked up the machining from Dad. I watched him make chips and metal fly all through growing up. Took metal shop classes all through school and learned to do some stuff the right way . I picked up my lathe a few years back to do my own gun work. I've built a few rifles and saved more than enough on the rifles that paid for the lathe easy. It's nice to have for plenty of hobby jobs!
Glen, I can't give extra calls with every deal but, some people have spent alot of time and money over the years with people and net forums. Little things like an extra call now and then are just a small thank you for all that many of you folks do.
Jim, That hammer handle is on the bottom right. These are many of the first calls I built. A couple of them were made by my father too. He has been trying to out do me since that first one off of his lathe. :wo:
Rocky
Ah yah...the ole hickory handle
I still like your shiney ones better. It's a whole new look, and a fancy one at that
I understand Rocky. And I really like those calls you make. That bead blasted pair I got for my brother were really cool in the hand & he really likes them too. Sometimes I think it's too bad we don't have more coyotes around here for all these calls to get a good workout but on the other hand I'm kinda glad the numbers are low with all the developments going up around here. Little kids really are at risk if they shold happen to wander in the wrong direction. But I keep trying!! I carry my original C-Bad aluminum call & a few others every time I go out.
BTW-- Thats a heckuva banner you put up for these guys Jim!!
I dont have much to offer Glen, do what I can
Rocky,
The rich red of that mouthpiece is a beautiful contrast that aluminum body. The beed blasted paw print looks sweet too.
That's a very unique style you have, one like I've never seen before. Come to think of it, I don't have a C-Bad call in my collection yet. If'n I aint the lucky one after the drawing I'll have to get a hold of you for one to add.
Great wright up on the bio, I consider myself fortunate to have hunting in common with my wife as well. It's good to see others have the same bond.
Keep up the great work, and we'll see you around!
Joey Gacnik
That is one sweet call. I love that metal finish. I am curious as to what kind of sound it makes. I would think that they would be really loud. :eyebrow: Guys, just give up now.....this one is mine. :sneer:
Very cool call Rocky, it really stands out in a class of its own. You are one lucky dude to have such a great family, keep them after them yotes.
Steve
Nice write up and call Rocky :yoyo:
Very nice write-up, call and choice of materials Rocky.
Rocky, Very nice calls you have there. I too started calling coyotes at a very young age. Looks like you have a wonderful family. I raised two boys and brought them up hunting and fishing and today they are very nice drug free guys. They grow up in a hurry so spend a lot of time with them. I was in Carlbad and went through the cave some years ago. Very pretty and unusual scenery. I came accross from El Paso and that country looked like it would be full of coyotes and bocat. Very nice pictures also.
Someone will be very proud to have that call. Nice calls and good looking family.
Love what ya do with aluminum !! Great stuff ! :congrats: :congrats:
very nice :yoyo:
