Title: Error message
Post by: HaMeR on August 19, 2009, 12:46:07 PM
I get this message when I use the "Mark As Read" tab at the bottom of the front page here on the Forums.

An Error Has Occurred!
Session verification failed. Please try logging out and back in again, and then try again.

I've tried the logging out trick to no avail. And it only does it when it feels like it. No real pattern to it at all.

Hang on, I am still looking for my notes.  At my age I can't even remember one thing.  Now where did I put that notebook?

Can you tell me roughly when the last time it did it was?
It'll help me narrow down my search through these logs. Looking for a day and approx time.

I'm still looking.
Nothing in the forum logs, nothing in the security logs, and I'm waiting for the apache logs to finish opening.
Ever open a 430 meg text file in Windows?  :eyebrownod:  Going on 15 minutes so far...

:roflmao: Ok Barry....that just about cost me a keyboard, and two hours behind a shop vac. :laf:

Well, I never found anything Buddy. Unless you were on a different computer using a different IP address. Which I'm doubting since your IP hasnt wavered for months.
I can see everything the server did for you while you were here, every image it loaded, every script it called, but no errors.

I DID SEE  that someone from your IP address tried to log in countless times from 10:58am CST to about 2:58pm CST on the 16th though.  :laf: Ok...that wasnt funny was it. And it was probably Diane, right? :sneer:

From here, I'm going to guess this to be a cookie issue. How long has it been doing it?

You're all lucky Bopeye has that big red BITE ME thing patented!!  :roflmao: :roflmao:

It started,, I think,, last Friday. Not exactly sure. I've been fighting constant headaches & worse than normal back pain since last Wednesday. Some things have been kinda blurry lately you might say.  :laf: :laf:  I cleared the cookies out this past Monday. I do remember that because I had to log back in on all the sites I visit that day. I think that was the day Firefox did an update too but I'm not sure. Oh well. I'll live.  :eyebrownod:

It's got to be a cookie issue, because it's not able to identify you. What are you using for a browser?
Title: Re: Error message
Post by: HaMeR on September 04, 2009, 07:38:50 PM
Firefox. I just recently updated it to the next level of 3.  :wo: .  or something like that. I cleared all my cookies that day. I remember doing that because I had to log back in on all of the sites I visit. Musta been 2 weeks ago now when I did that.

When you posted that (4:03 board time) I looked at the error logs and all I found was Semp and Yotehntr forgot their passwords.
Nothing about you getting a failed session. Unless thats not when it happened.

You didn't install any browser addons did you? tool bars? rss feed readers etc. I knows there's talk of those things wreaking havoc with data files (cookies)

My wife installed a Pay pal button in the tool bar or some kinda crap like that a few weeks back and I had the same kinda problem......
I removed the pay pal crap and all is better now....

I'm not seeing anything in the logs except people forgetting their password and stumbling at login again.

But here's what you can do. My guess is that either your browser, or your machine isnt clearing the session, or your not clearing the session by logging out when your done.

If your clicking a bookmark to get here, which I'm assuming your doing, make sure that the address in the address bar is http://www.finsandfur.net/forums
and not this;
http;//www.finsandfur.net/forums/index.php?PHPSESSID=8b461f985a22d71223a3f3e456da8246;www BLA BLA BLA

If it's the later, wipe it out all except http://www.finsandfur.net/forums and hit enter. Then log in.
What you should see in the address bar is the initial address, then when you click login the address bar will, briefly flash the ?PHPSESSID=8b461f985a22d71223a3f3e456da8246;www BLA BLA BLA before returning back to the initial address.

All this assuming your book mark points to the front of the forums.

Another thing that will cause this is having a bookmark set on a logged in session. Bookmarks should be set before your logged in.

AAAAAaaaaaaaaand another shot in the dark here is that your one of those people that never log out, and anytime you click on the forums bookmark you presume your going to come in already logged in.
In all reality the cookie file should die in 60 minutes, logging you out. So if you come back within 60 minutes you may or may not still be logged in. If youre having cache issues it could carry over the 60 minute mark and then once your in it starts to cross wires with the cookie file which theoretically should have logged you out. It realizes it, and corrects it, and now you get an invalid session error.
