Title: Leafy Suit
Post by: KySongDog on February 26, 2010, 08:37:33 PM
There was a thread recently about ghillie suits.   Wing Supply has a special right now on a Mad Dog leafy suit.  Good quality stuff.  I've been thinking of getting one for awhile now for turkey hunting so I jumped at this price.

Thats a REAL good price. They look a little light on the leafs, I wonder if that why they are cheaper.

The material has lots of little air holes to let it breath.  That may be the reason they didn't put leafs on every square centimeter.   :laf:   Besides by the time a turkey gets close enough to notice a leaf is missing, it would be roosting on top of your barrel.   :eyebrownod:

I received mine yesterday and I am very pleased with it.  Haven't field tested it yet though.

Its a good price cause thats the "Poison Ivy" leafy suit.  :sneer: R&D kinda slacked on the research part of market ability, but the good news is, it comes with a bottle of Calamine lotion.  :eyebrownod:

Here it is!! It will be nice for warm weather hunting. It should do a pretty good job at keeping the little biting insects out. Also conceals the girls nicely. Got both 9mm's right there with me and they conceal nicely in the "Round Bale".  :eyebrownod:

Bop and Wildwildwest, I've been following this thread and have a couple of questions:

1. What kind of material is in the leafy suit?  Does it have any cotton in it or is it synthetic?

2.  How quiet is it?  How much sound does it make to move your arms from lap to mounting a rifle for example?

Thanks for buying one to test for the rest of us!!   :congrats:

Title: Re: Leafy Suit
Post by: KySongDog on March 12, 2010, 08:19:10 PM
I got one too.  The tag says "100% polyester".   No cotton.   As far as noise goes while lifting a gun to my shoulder, I don't hear any to speak of.  No more than any other hunting garment I own.
Title: Re: Leafy Suit
Post by: FinsnFur on March 13, 2010, 01:32:52 AM
I kinda like it, but I still think there's much less leaf on them then the others, or the originals.
It kinda reminds me of a cross between a pinstripe suit, and a Guilly suit.
Title: Re: Leafy Suit
Post by: KySongDog on March 13, 2010, 05:15:42 AM
The camo I have now has no leafs at all on it.

Besides, one doesn't really need camo, leafy or not, to hunt.  Soft bland colors work well.  No movement is the key.

Well if ya ever seen a bush that was 5 1/2' no matter which way ya rolled it I would imagine it would look a little barren. I think that would also explain why the leaves look so small.   :alscalls: :alscalls:

Who loves ya Bop!!  :yoyo: :yoyo:

I agree with Semp.
Title: Re: Leafy Suit
Post by: Bopeye on March 13, 2010, 12:13:02 PM
I like it, because usually the first thing I notice in the woods is something horizontal. Most foliage is vertical and this will give me that vertical look and the tan blends nicely with our underbrush and then you have the leaves breaking it up. I'm wearing a bright fluorescent green shirt on under that and you can't see it. I can just toss this in the truck and have my camo handy for hunting after work.

It is a little on the scarce side when you look at the leaves, but one of my biggest bitches about camo is that it's usually "too busy". Up close it looks good, but at 20 yards it just looks like a green or brown blob. This will hopefully cut down that effect. I reckon the best judge will be the coyotes and for $15 bucks I didn't lose my butt too bad.

I use 'em on my camo & you be impressed how animals don't react to 'em.
I have 'em on a set of net camo that like Bop I keep in the rig & no matter what I'm wearing, if I'm wearing anything at all :sneer:, you don't notice what's underneath.  :eyebrow:

Y'all are a bad influence.     I ordered the leafy outfit, top and bottom.  I'll keep it in the rig and once in awhile I suspect it will come along in my walk about possibles pack and be the ideal sartorial accessory.  For a buck 95 each I had them throw in a couple of the Primos 3/4 head nets.

It's really quiet...Not sure what the material is. Out of the 4 or 5 ghillie suits I own This one is fast becoming my new favorite! I think the reason it looks like it has less folage is because the background color is different than the camo material. It's really quiet  and fit's really well. Maybe I'll post a pic and take a poll to see If I look as big....I mean as handsome as my new Cousin In-law :holdon:

Chet is like my family. In the 8 years or so that I have known him he has become just another part of the family. My kids love him, my parents, my wife, so that makes him kin.

Add about a hundred more leaves to fill in the blank spots.  No wait.  Subtract about 50 leaves to balance out the suit.  No wait.  Every coyote in the country will see you now. No wait.  I can't even find you in the pic anymore.   :nono:

I think it's awesome  :yoyo: and now you actually got me contemplating picking one up with some of those extra leaves.
The extra leaves really throw in a 3rd dimension making it look less human.

So now, how much noise is this thing going to make at say 20 below when raising a rifle. How much nylon is there to make that gravely scraping noise?

Now that's what I'm talkn about!
I wouldn't add more leaves. You already have the other leaves of the suit. In fact I don't have that many leaves on my leafless suit.

One other thing .... if/when you put leaves on your face mask make sure a leaf can not get into your line of sight when it gets blown by the wind & especially when you put your cheek on the gunstock to shoot.  :nofgr:  But then again if all you're shooting are pistols that shouldn't be a problem. :nono:

A real man only needs one leaf, strategically placed.

I'd need a really extra large leaf.   :eyebrownod:

So now, how much noise is this thing going to make at say 20 below when raising a rifle. How much nylon is there to make that gravely scraping noise?

Don't know about -20 but I put my new leafy suit in the freezer for a few hours and rustled it when I took it out.  It makes more sound than when it went in, but it isn't bad at all, and it is a soft natural rustle like damp leaves, not a synthetic nylon sound at all.

When it is at room temps it is not quite silent to lift arms as if lifting a rifle, but it is a low soft sound, nothing sharp or unnatural.

I doubt if I wear it much, but for the price it's a cheap Halloween outfit!

Adding leaves only serves to increase the sound potential that some seem to worry about.     Aren't we over thinking this thing a little?   :laf:

Got the bottoms to my camo today. I went out in the backyard and just sat down by a couple different trees and let my wife take pictures from about 10 yards. It looks to me like I might be better off without the leaves except for maybe on the top of the shoulders and my hat. I think that would help break up the human outline. Other than that I think the other leaves should be removed. Let's see what y'all think. In all fairness the suit is very quiet, but adding the leaves makes considerably more noise and just adds something else the gun, calls, etc. could snag on or brush up against to keen ears.

Let's hear some of your thoughts and I'm sure some BITE ME'S will be handed out.

This next shot is my backside. I don't know why my wife wanted to take it, but it does lend some credence to not needing the leaves.

Just add a few Daisies and a little grass here and there and you will be set.   :laf:

:wo: Now I've got to wonder what your poor neighbors would think, if they looked out their window and saw you field testing a bush?  :shock2:

Ok guys.... How about a caption to add to Bop's pics.  Here's a chance to earn those BITE ME's

Sorry Bop...  this is really too good to pass up.  :alscalls:

Look closely at the pic where you're setting down Bop.  Or were you standing in front of that little 6" tree trunk.  :wo:  Wait a minute. YOU make the dadgum tree look so small!!  And we can still see your mug. :alscalls: :alscalls:

i better not write that. someone might get upset with me so i'll just strike it off my screen.   :whew:

There that's done. Now where was I??  :wo:  Oh yeah!!

The pic where you are setting down shows you need more leaves on the pants. Look at the pic & think about it. Even bushes have leaves down by the ground. The 2nd thing is there are no leaves on the foliage around you now but what about in another month?? And thru the summer & into the fall.

And the last thing is Mrs Bopeye had to have fell in love with the other side of the last pic.

Not sure the material they use but the suit I picked up at Wallyworld a few years ago got broke in after a few washingings and the material became softer and very quiet.

Note:  I just wear the top, the pants seem to pick up every piece of brush you walk by and be careful crossing barbed wire.

Caption for the last pix ...
"Hey, is that the pizza delivery boy in the driveway?"  :innocentwhistle:

Back to the leaves. Having looked at the ... ah ....  leaveless side of the suit  I would say a few would be good, but not as many as you have on the front.
Why I'd add the leaves is to have 'em tie in w/ the leaves on the hat , gloves, etc.  IMHO
