After many years of crow hunting I always see people using owls to get the crows riled up. I have never seen crows mobbing an owl  but I have seen them mob hawks, especially red tail hawks, multiple times.
Hence my custom killa hawk decoy.  That thing has been attacked by every species of bird in New Hampshire almost. Sometimes it drives the crows into a frenzy.

I think the outspread wings with a crow decoy at its feet and the foxpro caller  playing dying crow are a perfect set up. The wings spread out make it look realistic  I have also used it predator hunting.

"Mantling Definition
Mantling is hunching, crouching, or arching shoulders and spreading wings over a recent kill to conceal it from other birds and predators who would be potential thieves. In this posture, the wings are mostly spread and drooped to the ground, exposing the bird's upper back, also called the mantle, which gives the action its name. The head is usually bent down to feed, and the tail is often spread and drooped to provide additional cover and counterbalance."

A couple more hawk tips! Instead of buying paint brushes and cleaning them and all that hassle to paint with I just buy a big box of Q-tips and use them they work great. You can also set the hawk out with some kind of furry stuffed animal and use it  Predator calling, a coyote will try to run a hawk off a kill every time.

The hawk also has a goofy base that supposedly turns and makes a hawk noise but I just took that out.

Hawks Feather

It is easy for me to see that it is a red tail!

nastygunz

The crows will zero in on that red tail like Bill Clinton on a White House intern!

Of course it's easy for you to see it's a red tail, you're a hawk feather.

I guess I never considered that, but you are correct!

This model is pretty nice too but I am a frugal New Englander too much money!

Up around these parts the red tail hawks are by far the most common and they can be a real pain in the butt, they always attack my expensive pigeon decoys and on more than one occasion have slammed my predator decoy.
